NEW Trek Emonda | Addictive! Fun! Uncompromising Disc-Only Race Bike

This video contains paid product placement for Madison. This is the brand spanking new Trek Emonda. For 2021, the bike has gone disc-only, gets a smattering of aero forming, drops weight on the top-end disc frameset and, as Jack will tell you, it’s a joy to ride, but is not without its quirks.
The original Emonda was focussed solely on low weight, and it was a true featherweight bike. Things have moved on considerably since then and riders place broader demands on their equipment.
While most were happy with the last-generation Emonda, Trek claims it wanted something ever so slightly more aero, while maintaining the low weight of the Emonda.
As such, like every other bike to hit the market in recent years, the new Emonda is claimed to be considerably more aero and lighter than its predecessor in the top-spec disc brake options.
With this new all-rounder package, Trek claims it expects the team to ride the new Emonda on seven out of ten race days.
Watch this video to find out what Assistant Editor, Jack Luke, has to say on the bike's all-important ride quality plus all you need to know about the new aero tech and of course the weight.

Trek: “Bike saves time at 350watts.” Jack, “I am unable to verify those claims”
@LarsRR
@LarsRR 4 года назад
By C just because Hambini is a weak cyclist doesn’t mean this is rubbish. The Emonda SLR is a super-high end bike, so it is aimed at the very top end of cyclists. I am not talking world tour, I am talking top level amateurs. 350 Watts at the weight of the average World Tour Pro (68 to 69kg) is an FTP of around 5.1 W/kg. That is a figure, that is absolutely attainable for a young, healthy rider, who commits 10 to 15 hours weekly to structured training over a few years. I have gotten myself to 333 FTP at 70kg within under 18 months of starting cycling. And I am clearly far off being the best amateur rider in my area. If you are not nearly able to perform these figures, it may not be the best idea to purchase a $10,000+ bike and hoping to get the full gain of what was promised. All I am saying is „350 Watts for the duration fo Alpe d’Huez“ is absolutely attainable without needing to be a pro tour cyclist.

Trek determined the 25mm tires optimized the overall aerodynamics of the wheel set. The frame wheels tires and handlebars were all designed for each other to maximize aerodynamics which is a pretty awesome initiative on the part of trek which is why I am a proud owner of the SLR9

Great bike and interesting move forward overall. However, I have to agree that 25 mm tube tires are just outdated at this point. I also feel strongly that in 2020 it's a total copout to market their climbing oriented bike with a short-cage de-railer. When I take my bike to the mountains (and I do), I'm going for the biggest cassette possible. On my 2016 Emonda it was a pain to have to buy and fit an entirely new rear de-railer in order to put a more climbing oriented cassette on my climbing bike.

There are things I want to add such as the Wahoo computer but I find myself worrying about increasing the weight... LOL So Im still using Strava as my monitor with my phone. These manufacturers always say it’s a certain % lighter than the last one,by now they should weigh nothing.
@austinshoupe3003
@austinshoupe3003 3 года назад
that's not how percentages work. If you reduced the weight of a 100kg object by 2%, it will weigh 98kg. But then reduce it again by 2% and youve brought it down to 96.04kg. The first 2% was 2kg. The next one is 1.96. The next one is 1.92. In theory, if you follow this trend infinitely, you would never hit 0. Percentages are weird. And that's why people marketing products like them.

This seems like exactly the same KVF design from a few years ago upgraded with disc. The prices at 33% higher for the SL6 which used to be $2499 for the rim brake and now costs $3299 for this new design with disc brakes. Trek seems to alternate between oval tubes and the aero tube shapes every few years. In addition, all their bikes have gotten heavier with disc brakes. The old Emonda SLR6 to my recollection was 14.75 lbs and was in the $6000 range. I don't think you can find anything that low weight anymore without paying $10k or more.

I'm glad that your review didn't place very much emphasis on the lightweight characteristics of the Emonda. Simply put, the only model in the entire range that is lightweight is the Emonda SLR9. Even the SLR7 is but a whisker shy of 17 lbs when you put on pedals and cages (and that is by Trek's own admission right on their website). In Canada you need to shell out $16500 +tax (assuming they aren't into discounting their just released 2021 models) to get a lightweight bike. Why would it be that the SL7 an $8000 CAD bike that is touted as a "climbing" bike would come with an advertised weight of 17.52 lbs before pedals or cages? That's flat out ridiculous.

What aero bike is that? The lightest „full“ Aerobike I know of is the Specialized Venge, and that is heavier than this. Buy a used bike for £500 and spend the rest on roids, physiotherapy and yoga classes. Unless of course, you are a pro that weighs less than 70kg (at 6 ft) and can consistently maintain 300 watts.

nice vid👍. ...in some sequences your saddle height seems way too low. ....my ancient old Scott CR1 from 2007 or so weighs around 7.5kg with old but nice Time RXS pedals and plastic bottle cages included, size XL. and at that time it cost me less than the new 2021 Emonda „climbing“ bike....makes me think 🤔

Nice review. Question about the new Aeolus RSL VR-C cockpit. What length of stem will be available? I run a 130mm with 42mm wide bars and sadly that length has typically not been available in these types of “all in one” cockpits less pros who likely get custom runs. Also had a panic moment (for me watching at least) @ 8:20. I’ve had similar situations where the pedestrian, having seen car go by, quickly think about crossing your path, completely missing you on bike.

I've just had a look in the Emonda press pack and can confirm the cockpit is available in the following sizes. Hope that's helpful! Jack 44X120 44X100 42X120 44X110 42X110 42X100 40X110 42X90 40X100 38X100 40X90 40X80 38X90 38X80

8.13kg for a climber's bike is quite heavy, isn't it? Especially if you add bottle cages and pedals it can easily go up to around 8.4. Even the top tier SLR 7 weighs 7.2kg. Only the SLR 9 breaks the UCI limit to 6.7kg.

hiii! is ok for you size 58 for a 1.85m cyclist? the brand recommend 58 between 1.80 to 1.85. New emonda is smaller than the market standards and I think that 58 is similar reach and less distantance between wheelbases than specialized for example in size 56. Thanks in advance.

105 > Ultegra. Shifting about the same and so much cheaperrrr. The weight difference is driven almost exclusively by the crankset.

How does it compare to the previous emonda and can you upgrade the bar and stem combo on the sl models to the same as the slr as the standard cockpit looks out of place. How does the fit of the h1.5 compare to the h2 fit of the previous emonda.

For a climbing bike discs are the right choice. Rim brakes will heat up the rim and if it is carbon then the tire will burst.

LOL, my aluminum Emonda weights 7,85kg and has 105, alu wheels and also SPD pedals ahahah and i'm pretty sure it's MUCH more stiff on any given climb. And cost less then half of the SL PRO 6 ahaahhah
@michaelnice93

Every climb up must include a decent, so wouldn’t the aero help go faster on the descents? Or does that not matter because you are usually going plenty fast anyhow? I suppose aero is meant to save effort pedaling, but it seems like in competition it may make a difference.

It does, but it's mostly up to the rider since a rider's body accounts for 80% of aerodynamic drag.
