Welcome to Bangkok international exotic plants, where hundreds of vendors from all over the world showcase the newest and TRENDIEST plants to the market - for year 2024 and beyond. This episode is very long and dense with information, so I encourage you to watch it over a few sittings so as not to feel overwhelmed. As a plant expert, even I must admit that I am seeing most of these plants for the first time in my life.
This exhibition is filled with rare plants, many of them recently discovered or created by very determined hunters and growers. Anthuriums still dominate the market, but we come across a plethora of gorgeous variegated and mint Alocasias. These alocasias will certainly be a major plant trend this year. Keep your eyes peeled for the many forms of Monstera Thai Constellations, as well as variegated philodendron hybrids, and beautiful variegated homalomenas.
If you frequent this channel, you would know that I share the same fondness for non-aroid plants. We come across a wide variety of rare and interesting plants that might have strong implications for the future houseplant market and in landscaping.
Where possible, I include the name of the booths and prices of the plants. But for those who want to make a mental conversion from the price tags shown, $1USD is equivalent to 35 Thai Baht.
Shows like this is important as major players from all over the world converge to trade, diversify, and distribute these plants back in their regions. It is also in these shows that we get to spot plant trends whether you are a rare plant collector or landscaper. If you missed this show and would like to attend the next one, Bangkok International Exotic Plants happen every quarter and you can visit their facebook page for the latest.
Enjoy the show!

There's such a delicate balance between attractive variegation, and sickly looking variegation personally my limit on what I'm willing to spend for a plant has basically stayed around 30 US dollars . Of course all rules are meant to be broken and I spent about $60 on a nicely variegated Thai constellation in July of last year🎉
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 8 месяцев назад
Actually… you said whats on my mind but its not exactly something i can say out loud at the time of filming out of respect for the owner. Not all variegation look healthy and nice 😅 but somewhere out there, someones into that - which is why I kept some of these thoughts to myself

This is my first video I watched from you, because I was interested in the up-and-coming and it was recommended to me by youtube. I listened to it while making and having dinner, and it was really interesting. I even followed a couple of the vendors! It was very informative, but also just lovely to see all these beautiful plants and your voice is very calming to listen to. Thank you for the tour!!

10 minutes of viewing and I have already fainted in front of so many fascinating variations ! Hahaha ! In Belgium these plants are sold very, very expensive ! €40 for 20 centimeter plants ! But sometimes €200! Is it the same with you, Sean ? Bisous, merci to share your passion with us 🤩😍🥰😘
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 7 месяцев назад
I think the plant prices are much lower in Thailand and Indonesia, because there are more supply here and also growers. But they become expensive when exported because of shipping risks and export regulations. Thank you for watching by the way! I appreciate it

Wow! Amazing plants. I'm not so sure about those Thai Constellations, though. They all look the same to me. It seems kind of dicey to give them names and try to sell them as unique, presumably to get more money for them.

These vendors need to when possible bring their shops to the customer's countries. Thailand and Indonesia have such a negative reputation for importing with collectors I know saying it's a 50:50 crap shoot if you get anything alive or true. They literally budget for expected scams hoping the good arrivals pay for their losses. One guy sent me dried green peas and said they were $120 worth of rare Caladium corms. Being a botanist I knew better within seconds.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 6 месяцев назад
Its a complicated issue I think… 1) the disinfecting, shipping of the plants have too many variables to go wrong 2) some species are not hardy for shipping and sellers may not be aware of that 3) it may have been packed with too little or too much moisture 4) in asia, theres no consumer protection so the seller is always right 5) asians tend to shift blame instead of owning up to a mistake These things one have to keep in mind before ordering. But it is much safer and better to buy from a local plant trader who is used to dealing with international growers.

Platycerum (Staghorn fern) is a lot of fun. to grow. My father-in-law gave me one and I was able to keep it for several years. They are a bit challenging in a low humidity environment. If someone had an outdoor shower, like near a pool, that would be a great place to mount one of these. My father-in-law also gave me a fishtail palm which was pretty challenging. It also loves humidity and hates temperatures below 60 deg F. My father-in-law lived close to the ocean in San Pedro, California. He turned his back yard into an exotic plant garden combining a small cactus garden with palms and other plants that would be suitable to Australia, near the coast. Welwitschia mirabilis is a very slow growing African plant that looks half dead in the wild with long curling leaves. Welwitschia is unusual in having a very condensed, unbranched stem and two persistent leaves that grow for the entire life of the plant. The plants are mostly dioecious, rarely monoecious. The ovules and microsporophylls are terminal borne in small compound, unisexual cones. The mature seeds are small to large. The microsporangia are borne in synangia. One of the most recognizable icons of the Namib Desert is the endemic gymnosperm Welwitschia mirabilis. Recent studies indicated that climate change may seriously affect populations in the northern Namibia subrange (Kunene region). Welwitschia mirabilis can survive for hundreds of years in the arid desert by absorbing water from sea fog and deep groundwater. Welwitschia play a key role in the desert ecosystem, providing food to various animals, as well as the local peoples of the area. This plant show had a nice mix of variegated plants that included ones that mixed in other colors and weren't just shades of green and cream or green and yellow. I personally love color, lots of it, and got a chance to see a lot of exotic plants that I personally love besides the beautiful but more austere 'mints' and velvety green leaves of more fashionable plants that are suited to modern architecture with stark white walls. Thank you, Sean.

Thank you so much for taking the effort to share the exhibition experience with us! Helps a lot getting through the could and grey European winter. Could you find out the seller’s name of the second last booth you stopped by in the video? It was a Aglaonema nursery….

Overall stunning show. I love the monstera, but really can’t keep up with variegated varieties. The alocasia really are on the come up. I don’t think I saw a variegated Jacklyn? That one blows me away.

I did not see the Jacklyn in this one, but its possible that I might have missed it or maybe it was sold out 😀

That orange Philodendron you guy's call "orange princess" is or looks like called Philodendron "prince of orange" is made in the Netherlands and orange is a very inportant color in the Netherlands, they call there kings and prince orange and such and the kingsday is also all in orange color, so yeah orange is very inportant to the Dutch people. Maybe this one is a crossbreed from the "prince of orange". I also bought "prince of orange" plant in the Netherlands and it is very colorful although mine is more orange and yellow, more compact and has no splash motif on the leaf and remains small and compact, very lovely plant that fit everywhere, Greets from Belgium.

Those homalomenas are amazing. Mostly green and yellow and a little pinky-peach. I haven't seen them for sale here in the US but would imagine that they will do well when they do arrive. Thanks for another wonderful video.

Hey Sean. What is it about the kaempferia variegata that's hard to bring back? Price or do they not ship well? Thanks

Its legality, its hard to import plants into Indonesia with proper channels. And not worth the risk to smuggle
