New Tripods! 3 Legged Thing Jay and Winston 2.0 Field Tests

Just got Jay and for me and my style it is absolutely perfect. 3 legged things have become my go to!

Jay has joined my Winston (mk1) too recently. I’ve not used it in anger yet but it perfectly fills the void for carry on or longer hikes that is left when Winston is just inconvenient. A thought that occurred to me watching this is if you have a mk2 Winston you should be able to just swap the legs over and have the taller reach and levelling base (I don’t use the center column)

Hello Brendan, Thanks for the detailed review I’m getting ready to order the Mike version with the Cine Head was wondering how the Jay Performed as a monopod using the Vanz boost feet not sure if you had any experience with that. ?

Hey, Brendan...I've been using a leveling base for a while, and just recently bought the iFootage TC5 mainly because it has a built-in leveling base (very much like the 3LT Jay and Mike), and it's small enough to be a traveling tripod. Doesn't fold up quite as small as the Jay (about 21"), but then again, it's max height is closer to 59" (with the center column extended). The center column can be removed so that you can lower the tripod to about 7". For my needs, I don't need the removable legs, and I also like that the iFootage has spikes that are retractable (don't need to change feet). And, hey, they're cheaper too! Enjoying your AZ/UT videos. Heading there in May, will be seeing many of the same locations you're at. Are you heading to the Wave?

It's ok that you're not cool...most people aren't! I enjoy your content and hope, someday, to meet you on one of your workshops. So far, they haven't worked out with my family vacation plans, but I have high hopes for 2021. And I can't help but laugh every time you say something great about "Jay".

Leveling tripods are good in theory. But I rarely shoot panos with the horizon dead center. I usually tilt the camera slightly up or down, depending on whether the sky or foreground is more compelling. So, I "level" my camera based on the center of my composition. Then I swing left and take exposures moving left to right. As long as I use medium-length focal length and shoot vertically, no problems getting a straight, well-stitched pano. Oh, and I always compose to leave room for cropping.

I keep my tripods in checked luggage. Security in Naples, Italy would not let me take it with me in carry on. There was no time to go check it (since security takes forever there) so I had to film Paris hand held. No way I'm giving them a $500 tripod on this next trip.

Great video, good luck with the tripods, I have had one from a known company, and so far pretty much everything went wrong that could, so to see another type of tripod.

There are a ton of tripods, that have a leveling base. Starts with the smallest of its kind, the Manfrotto Befree Live, and goes all the way up to big, heavy duty tripods from Sachtler and Vinten.

Really useful as I’m looking to change to a lighter tripod ! I’ll be interested to hear what you say about mike.

Would you happen to have a discount code as part of the pro team? I'm thinking of picking up Jay but the price point is not so lovely.

It'll be great to see a video from Antelope Canyon now that they've done away with the photographers package. I think I may head out there in March to check it out.

I love 3LT and my “Travis” tripod was the most I could afford now. That ‘Jay’ is pretty cool though. :)

I purchased a Brian Punk tripod for me and a Corey Punk tripod for a friend in Dec 2018 after watching a ton of different reviews on them . The one from 3 Blind Men and an Elephant was the one that sealed the deal . In hindsight I maybe should have bought the Winston considering the size of my lens , but I usually shoot landscapes with shorter , lighter lenses . They have been fantastic and while the cost for me here in Canada would be quite high , the last full-size beast that I bought was my Slik 700 dx back in the 90s - so this one will last 25-30 years . The Winston 2.0 is on my radar , unless the release one like it with the leveling base and the great video head ( for when I do video work and need the fluid head ). I would rather someone recommend something that they feel passionately about and in turn get some type of sponsorship , than not . Be honest , don’t be a mouthpiece for a company if the product is suspect . A 40 year Canon or Nikon shooter is going to recommend that same camera 99% of the time , same as a Chevy , Ford or Dodge guy is going to stick the that brand . They know it well and will discuss the good things about it .

It's not the only one of it's kind. The Leofoto Ranger LS-284CEX is also a travel tripod with levelling base. It doesn't fold down as small as the 3lt Jay however as it is 52cm folded whereas the 3lt Jay is only 40.5cm making it much more travel friendly.

The Novoflex Triobalance has been around for a while; check it out and its features may surprise you.

New tripods. 😁 I should get a new one, but I'm getting by with my old one, I don't use them as much as I used too. I did get a new mobile phone gimbal, maybe my videos will be smoother, just need to do a video. I see you got the weird hand thing going on with the 360 selfie stick. Cheers.

Can you not put the legs from the Winston 2 on the top section of the Legend ? The thread is the same so they should fit. You then have a taller Legend.

The Jay legs/kit are a very good bit of kit. But it comes at a premium price. Here in the UK the sticks alone are £449. Kit (cine head) = £679. Last year I bought the LEOFOTO Ranger LS-324CEX Carbon fibre tripod with the Leofoto BV-10M video head. A bit bigger than the Jay. I would say as well spec'd as the Jay - but these premium legs cost me £359 and the video head £183 (total £543). This is a good all-rounder. I wouldn't mind the Jaykit but could not justify it's price just for travel use and it's not compelling enough for me to want to sell the Leofoto.

I have really shit luck with tripods, so I am thinking of getting three legged thing Travis, from the punks range, Have you ever tried the punks range, I shoot with a Fujifilm XT30 and 55-200mm, and do landscapes, waterfalls the usual stuff.

Brendan...I'm curious as to how many of these value CF tripods have you gone through in the last 5 years because they just don't work like they did brand new? My understanding, as you stated near the end of the vid, is that you don't pay for tripods, but still curious how many have broken to the point you have to swap out.

I got the Travis the other day as a beater and despite liking the legs the ball head is pretty crappy to use...and thats coming from an amateur thats not picky about gear. Its difficult to get tight enough to hold my XT3 with decent size lenses and it feels less secure than my $50 bargain no namer. I can crank the little knob all the way down and still move my camera around easily. Also, I realized when I got home the little level fell off of the head somehow despite being carried from my truck, setup in place, and then put back in box. I realize its a cheap tripod, big picture, but they marketed it as their entry level tripod that was as good or better than other professional tripods from other companies. Maybe someone can recommend another one but for now it didnt inspire confidence for my gear and its going back to amazon. Looks cool though!

Thoughts on the Peak design Tripods?

Not sure if that setup is correct? Having a bowl base and then fitting a ball head onto it seems wrong as the ballhead would have to be adjusted 100% level over the horizon for the bowl base and its level to be effective. In other words you would have to level the bowl and then also level the ballhead..... hence the reason why the tripod company supplied the video head.

Did you say you are based in Portugal?

3 Legged Thing should sell a set of legs separately (like Novoflex does)! This way you could buy lets say Jay and mount the legs of Winston or Mike on it. When traveling and you only need one tripod (but you'd like some flexibility) just take the other set of legs with you! 🤔

When you turn Jay into a tabletop tripod, could you use it as a base & put a leg on it with a head on top? They look very well made. I can see why they are priced as they are.

Did you find Jay was too short since it only goes up to 43 inches? I’m shorter in height so it might be a little too short. What are your thoughts?

Had a Three Legged Thing called Brian, one of the first models to come out. What piece of junk, used it once and sold it. It was too flimsy and wouldn't hold 4kg never mind the stated 20kg. Hope their newer products have improved as they aren't cheap.

The Winston is not a good tripod for someone who is 5'5". Hope this helps someone.

Ypu might not get paid directly but the thousands of dollars in equipment is payment.I’m notsaying that it influences your reviews as you are using them all the time in your videos and for me that’s more important than what you say in your reviews.
