In this video I review the features of the 3 Legged Thing Leo travel tripod and the AirHed Switch Ball-Head Mount. This is an absolutely wonderful travel tripod with countless options and configurations. Take it with you anywhere, use it for macro photography and even as a video rig. I had the opportunity to meet 3 Legged Thing owner Danny Lenihan who gave me some of the Leo tripod’s highlights and I was so impressed, I just had to try it for myself.

Great review and demo. I saw this "tripod" on a Kelbyone course and ordered one. I love how small and light it is. My Gitzo is great but it takes up an entire suitcase diagonally, and then only fits in the biggest ones. I carried it to a waterfall in Hawaii to take long exposures. Next time I will bring this beautiful multi-tool. It does everything my Gitzo does and more. The only exception is height, but it's high enough. I saw a 10 or more footer the other day. I don't know who would need something like that, or where they'd keep it/put it when going to a shoot.

Thanks for the review it was excellent, a good delivery, all the abilities of the tripod simply and clearly explained, something that is rare on RU-vid. I have just ordered a Leo for use as a travelling companion, the tripod is on a special offer in the UK at almost 1/3 off the retail price, making it somewhat of a bargain.

@@TechGearTalk Still learning about the Z7 as I have only had it since Christmas, it is one very impressive piece of kit, very, very, capable, certainly more capable than the idiot behind the viewfinder (which is awesome by the way). I mostly shoot landscape / seascape or travel images so don't have much call for the AFC mode or high frame rates, I have to say that the image quality is very impressive. I just need some decent light to make the camera and lens (extremely sharp) show their true capabilities. Enjoy.

Very good video. I actually came across this video because I just recently came across the 3 Legged Thing Punk Patti in my local camera store and was looking for more info. Your video does a great job showing the features of the tripod. As for the review which likened your review to an infomercial, I think I might see where that comes from. You are reviewing a tripod with features you really like. It's a positive review on something you like, which is not unusual. What might help is if you do a comparison video, showing two similar products. That might look less like a sales pitch. That being said, your video gives more detailed info about these tripods than any video posted by the manufacturer, so you are certainly helping those of us in need of info.

Hi Matthew. Thanks so much for watching and for leaving insightful feedback. You're right, I'm using a tripod that I really liked and was just sharing all the things I liked about it. I like your idea of doing a comparison video. I'll try to pick something similar. Thanks for the suggestion! What do you shoot with? Did you end up picking up the Patti?

Tech Gear Talk: My home/family camera is a Nikon D 3100, but I also use DSLR cameras in my work. My current primary work camera is Nikon D7100, but I have also used D200, D300, D800 and D810. I have not yet purchased the Patti. I was leaning hard toward a Manfrotto, but seeing the Patti threw a whole new dimension into my decision process. Pretty sure that the Patti will be my choice, but doing more research. That's why your video was so helpful. Patti has flip-lock legs, for those who prefer that style.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 лет назад
The flip locks are definitely faster to deploy, and after using both, I definitely prefer those. I actually just picked up a couple of Sachtler FlowTech 75 which have an interesting new system. Not really a comparable product in terms of price or use, but if you're bored, check it out.

Hello, you offer to ask questions here. I would like to take advantage of that. I would like to purchase version 2.0 of Leo. What strikes me is that the camera plate for attachment to the tripod head must be the one that comes with it? This is then square. I have the L-Bracket from 3 Legged for my Z7 and soon the Z8. Is this compatible with the Leo 2.0 ball head? Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany! ... by the way, great video!

I'm in the market for a tripod. Thinking the punk series brian. But this one and even the brian is bulky. It's clear this company is super innovative. Many people strap their tripod to their gear bags on the back or outside of the bag or what have you. All the products from 3LT are gorgeous but wish they made one less bulky for those long hikes and destinations.

Hi, What is the weight it can support when used as a monopod. I usually use a Nikon D7200 + Tamron 150-600 G2. Is it advisable for this gear in both tripod as well as monopod usage?
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 6 лет назад
What's the total weight for that setup?
@agowda9

The Camera + lens (D7200+150-600 G2) is about 4.5 kg + the Manfrotto head about 1kg. total about 5.5kg
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 6 лет назад
That’s about 12.1 lbs. the Leo has a 66 lbs load capacity. The monopod I think is even higher than that.

How does the Leo compare to the Punks line (Corey)? I also subscribe to the BINOBIT (Buy it nice or buy it twice) Philosophy, but nearly $300 seems a little price for a travel tripod.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching. Corey and Leo have essentially the same configuration, but Corey is Mag Alloy and Leo is Carbon. Corey doesn't have the Parallel lock, or the detachable switch clamp, and holds less than half what Leo does. Both are really nice so it comes down to whether you think these features are worth the additional cost. Let me know what you think.
@circusstarsider598
@circusstarsider598 7 лет назад
That's good to know, thanks. I'm okay with the mag alloy, but I really like the quick and secure detachment system of the Leo. I checked the 3LT site, but I can't tell if it's the same attachment system for the Corey.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 7 лет назад
I just looked to confirm and it's not the same.
@StephenFungOK
@StephenFungOK 6 лет назад
I just bought the Corey and found out that you can buy that QR system as a retrofit. The cost is around $79 US I think so you're almost halfway to a Leo by that point. You just remove the hex and bolt the new plate on. I'm not bothered by the Mag Alloy either. I bought it to be a little rough with it and to save money. It was more important that I could actually fit it in my gear bag with all the other gear.

The Albert is just a larger version of the LEO. It has a higher Max Height which can be useful depending on how you use it. It has the same load capacity, so that shouldn't be an issue. Of course the folded length is higher (16" vs 13.67"). Does that help?
