He did basic training in Canada. One of the certificates on the wall is actually the military achievement certificate issued from Canadian Armed Forces recognizing the candidate completed BMQ/BMOQ.
I would say 32 Battalion of the South African Army or the Rhodesian African Rifles. I am not sure about the combat history of the JR but I hear they don't fuck around.
