A sunrise ride into the mountains on my new 2022 Vespa GTS 300 HPE.
This is a long ride through some pretty scenery where I talk about why I picked the Vespa, my first impressions of the bike and some of the maintenance requirements.
Kind of a casual review.
Are the Vespa wheels too small?
What gas mileage does a Vespa get?
How do you start a Vespa?
How do you break in the engine on a Vespa?
What kind of oil for a Vespa?
What kind of gas for a Vespa?
How fast is a Vespa?
How to increase the top speed on a Vespa GTS 300 HPE.
Does the GTS 300 HPE have linked brakes?
What are the service intervals on the Vespa GTS 300 HPE?
Can you ride a Vespa on the highway?
Can you tour on a Vespa?

Love that color, I’m a fifty four year old who hasn’t had a motorcycle in a few years and somehow found myself watching scooter videos and now contemplating one of these for rides through the countryside . Funny how we change as we age.

I'v been riding motorcycles for nearly 30 years, two summers ago I picked up a cheap Burgman 400 on a whim for fun. Long story short, I've sold my gold wing, vstar 1300, and I'm now on a 2021 Vespa 300; go test ride one!

I started riding motorcycles when I was a kid, beginning with the Honda mini trail 50 when it first came out. I’ve owned or ridden just about every type of motorcycle. I started riding scooters around seven years ago, and I haven’t looked back. I think you’ll begin to appreciate them. ✌️ PS: I’ve owned quite a few scooters.

I'm 63 and hadn't ridden a motorcycle in well over 40 years, but I did a lot of dirt bike riding as a teenager. Ordered the exact same model and color Vespa as in this video back in February, took the MSF course the first week of May this year, got my motorcycle endorsement and the scooter was delivered a week later. I've been having a blast on mine. I've driven in traffic a few times, but certainly prefer the back roads.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your brandnew Vespa. The GTS 300 is definitely a "must have". I bought mine in 2020, gathered 6'000 miles since then and I think I got a real multi-purpose vehicle with the GTS 300. During summertime I drive to work with the Vespa and I also take it for a longer drive to the Swiss Alps and other beautiful sceneries. My wife bought her own one two months ago and now we often go out in the green for a picnic. Enjoy it!

I have an older 300GTS. With my top box I can carry up to 6 bags of groceries. I use it to commute to work, weather allowing. It takes 2 gallons to go the 125 miles at 70+MPH. Passing Semi trucks at 75 is stimulating. The seating position is certainly different compared to my motorcycle.. You sit upright with nothing in front of you.... it's like riding a 70MPH bar stool. I have a windshield on mine.. freeway driving is quiet, smooth and weather free.

Nice video, encouraging! I just turned 82 years of age and I bought a 2023 Vespa 300 GTS Super (red) a few weeks ago. Having fun! Seven years ago I sold my Burgman 650 Executive (blue), which I rode for about 12 years. Loved that bike/scooter but it was too heavy for me to handle safely. I put about 56000 kms on it . When I was younger I rode a 650 AJS (British bike) for a few years. I don't think age should be a barrier as long a s a little common sense is used. We only go around this life once. Why not enjoy it? Always loved Vespas from afar, and my wife's recent trip to Italy was a trigger. I finally got one!

My 2007 GTV250i has 33,000 miles. I’ve ridden 6k of those in 2-1/2 years. Gets 60-65mpg on Premium. GTVs have analog instruments. Speedo reads 5mph standing still. GPS confirms 5mph slower than indicated at all speeds. I found that when the low fuel light comes on it will take 1.7 gallons. I have not run it to empty. They are hard to fill without spilling fuel. If you lift the bucket up and support it with the fuel cap, any spillage won’t run into the bucket. Works for me. Best wishes on the new scooter!

Excellent video. You make a compelling argument for a Vespa. Several years ago I bought a 650 Burgman and have been extremely happy with it. I still have a Triumph Trophy that I use in addition to the Burgman. I've loosely considered getting a smaller bike. The Vespa is truly a classic. I really want to ride one one day soon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

Thanks Ken. I've been curious about the Burgman too. The fact that it's a "classic" was certainly a draw for me. It's hard to not think Vespa when you think scooter. I have little experience with other scooters for comparison, but I have been very happy with my GTS so far.

@@flatgrindrides precisely the reason we all should just ride what we like. The Burgman is a great bike but definitely more motorcycle like than scooter like. That aside, the ease of a great CVT makes a great difference between it and a regular bike. The Vespa is truly a classic. I have to look closer at those next time I'm in the market.

I’ve got a 2014 Vespa GTV300 in CA (along with a bunch of motorcycles). In TX, I found a new out of the box 2018 (last year imported) Burgman 650 Executive at a dealer in Houston. The Vespa is fun and the genuine Italian leather seat is beautiful. It even comes with a seat condum in case it rains. The Vespa is not really happy at around an indicated 70mph. The seat while pretty isn’t shaped right for long rides as you tend to slide forward uncomfortably. I did a 250 mile round trip ride with our local Scooter Posse and my butt was killing me so I bought a blow up saddle cushion that I’m going to use for my next extended ride. Obviously, the Burgman is happier at freeway speeds, but for some reason it is NOT as smooth as the Vespa even though it has 2 cylinders. The Burg’s CVT isn’t as smooth as the Vespa’s either. Coming to a stop the Burg’s CVT feels as if the belt hits flat spots and doesn’t want to come down to an idle. I passed on 2 used Burgs because I thought something might be wrong with them. When I took mine for a test ride, I decided the odd feeling from the CVT must just be the “nature of the beast” since it was new and still did it. I should mention that the word on the modern Vespas is that they have front end wobble so you don’t want to take your hands off the grips. I wouldn’t know since I don’t take my hands off the grips while riding.

2 weeks ago I purchased the grey HPE. I considered the Xmax also. So purchased the AK550 back in November from the Vespa dealer. Couldn't stop thinking about it but didn't because of price (same as you). Now I got it and I'm happy I did it. Got the Faco double screen and rear folding rack. The only drawback that really is bad is the price. Anyhoo, good video. I gotta get my camera out as I've just taken photos and haven't done a video yet. Thanks for the upload and the comments. Edit: I forgot to say congrats on the purchase :)

The fact you are able to sit pretty at 45-50mph on that thing and have SUCH a quiet engine is amazing. It was defo made for those kinds of weekend rides and city darts. The most offputting thing to me about scooters at crusing speed (30mph plus) is the sound that often comes with it. Defo would be interested in taking one of these for a test ride

Congratulations on the bike! I have the same scooter in the same color that I got 2 months ago and already have over 1700 miles on it. As far as the octane thing goes, I think octane is measured differently in Europe than the U.S. My understanding is 95 octane in Europe equals 91 octane in the U.S. I've been using 93 octane in mine and have averaged about 68 MPG. The low fuel light on mine comes on when the gauge gets down to the last bar. I usually fill up after about 120 miles. I added the color-matched top case to mine, mainly to store my helmet.

That orange comes out very pretty on video 👍 EU and USA mesure octane differently 95 (10% ethanol) in EU is basically the same as 87 in USA. In the EU model they only have abs on the front disk, if it's the same on the USA model that's probably the reason to why the rear break feels more "grabby"

Very nice video. I have a vespa primavera 125, which ran out of fuel at 206 miles. Mine is white and it's done 42,000 miles. I decided to buy a new scooter and considered a new primavera, but due to the better spec of the Honda SH125i, front and back disks with abs, stop start, keyless and traction control, 16 inch wheels, lots of storage. Pretty sure you don't get this model in the U.S. Your vespa I believe has dual channel abs, not linked braking. If you haven't found him, consider watching Robot at vespa motor sport. Enjoy your awesome vespa!!! I do food deliveries on my Honda and in just over 1 year have done over 20,000 miles. My back tyre was changed at 11000 miles front tyre did 20,000 plus.. It's a beautiful scooter. I have a 2006 Vespa GT200, in like new condition, with just over 14K miles on it. It had 1800 miles on it when I bought it in 2016. I considered buying a new GTS300, but before I could they replaced it with the HPE, and DOUBLED the required maintenance. I found that unacceptable, plus I questioned Vespa's reason for doing it. Was it to make more money for dealer service departments, or did they have doubts about the reliability of the HPE engine? Best of luck with it, and have fun. I'd probably buy one if it wasn't for those 6,000 mile major service intervals.
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 года назад
Yeah, the maintenance requirements change gave me pause too, but I decided to go for it anyway. The replacement items are fluids and filters, belts and rollers, which I would be doing (or at least inspecting) anyway. I guess the big thing is the more frequent valve adjustment interval. That’s more of a PIA, but I guess it wasn’t a dealbreaker for me. Have you heard any horror stories about the HPE engine? I’ve seen complaints about the maintenance intervals but I haven’t seen much in terms of actual problems… If you have I’d love to hear about it. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Where would the closest dealer be? Charlotte? I hope you end up getting one, as I think you would really enjoy it. Maybe you could pick up a used one somewhere and not even worry about the dealer. Just a little local shop wrench on it if necessary? Good luck! I had some ancestors in the Spartanburg area, but that was a long time ago, about the time of the Revolution.

great video. thanks. interesting to hear how the gts is for experienced motorcycle rider. stating in gts and suspect i’ll end up on a motorcycle for longer interstate rides. I think most gross owners don’t trust the side stand for more than a few mins. I would recommend the center stand. As for the speedo - think it’s about 7%off. but you were guessing roughly the same speed diff i see vs waze on a phone.

That’s a tough decision. I might go for the ADV in Chiang Mai. I suppose it depends on the type of riding you expect to be doing. People who have those new Honda scooters have told me that oil changes are basically dealerships because of all the body parts that have to be removed to do the job. I will admit to cutting down a 24mm socket to make it just the depth needed for that oil nut because the space is so tight and I don’t have a motorcycle lift. And those things are not addictive, I now own 4.

More capacity for stuff below the seat(2xhelmets and room for other stuff). Very good mileage per gallon. Sporty ride, if that can be sad for a scooters. It get a more room for a streching legs.

Great video and beautiful roads and scenery. I will be eager to hear your thoughts as you put more miles on it. I’m in my 50’s and started riding 6 years ago on a TW200. Currently I have a 2019 Honda Monkey and love it for its small size, weight and easy handling, but lately I’ve been thinking I’m ready for something a little bigger than the 125. Having to run wide open throttle to maintain 55 gets a little old. I have been looking at various smaller bikes from Royal Enfield and Honda, but haven’t found anything that feels quite right. I’m curious to see if Honda really does introduce the New CL300 and CL500. I think one of those might work, but now I’m wondering if a Vespa might be a good match for me as well. I ride mostly quiet country back back roads and two lane highways that are all 55-60.
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 года назад
I have a TW 200 too and I much prefer the Vespa for road riding. I haven’t tested the top speed on the Vespa yet, but I’m sure it’s a bit higher than the TW with stock gearing. The Vespa is also a bit zippier and just easier to ride around town. The scooter experience is same same but different. If you can find one to test ride you should. I love my motorcycles but I love this thing too.

Was wondering, I live in New Jersey and commute into New York every day if this is a mode of transportation that would be satisfactory and doable? I’d have to do a out 12 miles of highway driving probably between 70 and 80 miles an hour -and then once I’m in the city it’s mostly stop and go maximum 25 mph. Anybody reading this would love your opinions. I just love the Vespa and I’m hoping that is the right fit for me.

In the city is no problem. The 12 miles of highway at that speed would make me think twice. Some people would do it, others would feel very uncomfortable. Tough call. Maybe there is one you could rent and do a test run to see how you feel about it?

As for the gasoline octane; the Piaggio manual recommends 95 RON which is the European standard for measuring octane. The US uses an average of RON and MON, (R+M)/2. 95 RON converts to 90.7 (R+M)/2, so you're good using 91 (R+M)/2.

The tank meter is not very accurate on GTS 300. I got in trouble once out in the countryside and stopped at a small general store and bought a canister of Aspen alkylate gasoline, purposed for lawn movers and such. I thought the engine ran better, with even better mileage, on that fuel compared to the standard 95 RON with 10% ethanol in it. Unfortunately, the price of Aspen skyrocketed short thereafter. My old new Vespa and I hit a Volkswagen and I got some bruises. Very soon I'm getting an insurance replacement and that baby is going to be fed on premium 98 RON containing only 5% ethanol, the same juice I use in my car with a GM Z22YH engine.

Thank you! The camera is a GoPro Hero 10 mounted to my helmet. It is recording in 4K with the widest lens setting of “superview”. The image stabilization is set to “hyper smooth standard” and the horizon lock is turned off. When I watched the video I realized that the very wide angle lens and the stabilization settings make it look almost too smooth. The lean into the turns does not look as dramatic as it really is and the turns don’t look as tight as they are! I’m planning to do a similar ride and change the settings to see if I can get it looking a little bit more realistic. The microphone is a MOVO ACM400 in my helmet and plugged into the GoPro.
