@@Rouxenator The Polo and even the bare bones Vivo versions are the best and most reliable vehicles VW has ever made. There is a reason why it outsells even the Corolla. And for the money you spend for either version, they would be WAY superior to the cardboard toy cars that other competitors will try to sell you in this segment.

Toyota should have brought in an immediate replacement when they discontinued the Tazz, now the budget car sector is ruled by the vw vivo. I own a vw vivo and it's a remarkable budget vehicle. I also owned the Tazz another good vehicle after 12 years the car was sold in December of 2016, I had covered 390,000kms In my opinion the polo vivo is better offers much more e.g. aircon, p/s, a Bluetooth deck, mine is the 2015 vivo comfortline 1.6 , I just love the car. Very very very light on fuel .

Yeah, especially the ones who ain't very experienced drivers (think soccer stars), & then drive these quite fast cars at breakneck speed.....wait for it....in the rain, and on slippery roads. And usually end up breaking their necks. Little to zero sympathy with them.

@@Rouxenator Fully agree with you on that one. I'm a diesel technician, and can tell you from experience that vw is absolutely kak to work on. Had to remove a Golf intercooler after the flimsy turbo failed.... Had to remove almost the whole front of the car, bumper, grille, headlamps, and God knows what else to get to it. Cost the customer ten times as much as a simple Toyota intercooler.

Many people say for vw, you need a vw mechanic. Could be, I've heard in Germany they're a bit better, and mechanics know how to fix them. I will admit that their build quality, especially bodywork is excellent

We've got the MK6 Polo. VW South Africa sells both the MK6 Polo and Mk5 Polo simultaneously (the MK5 Polo going by the name Polo Vivo, a more affordable Polo option) They did the same thing with the Mk4 Polo, selling it as a Polo Vivo alongside the Mk5 Polo when it was new. Basically they just keep selling the older car as a more budget/youth orientated option.

Also whist I agree that the perceived quality in German brands is very good, that’s stuff like how soft the interior plastics are & the premium feel of all the bits & pieces that you touch & interact with... However the mechanical & electrical reliability is a whole other story... especially the newer cars with more complexity... I’d hate to own any high-end premium German vehicle built within the last 15 years out of its warranty period... your wallet will hate you. I speak from shared experience. Pre-2000s German vehicles were solid & as reliable as a Toyota Land Cruiser & that’s why you still see some very old German bruisers on the roads today... nowadays they’re extremely premium over complicated ticking time bombs... even the latest cheaper cars, the way the new shape polo’s chassis has been engineered has given no thought to repairability or longevity, they try to get too clever by over complicating & integrating multiple components into one which looks good on paper & from an engineering package but will become a nightmare down the road... I was speaking to a mechanic the other day who by the way is a VW fanatic, he said to stay away from the new shape polo... something as simple as a minor front end collision could require an entire new subframe & in some cases write off the car. (This isn’t referring to the polo in the video but rather the new shape full fat Polo) My point is German cars are fantastic when they’re new & in their warranty period & I’m not disputing their perceived quality & premium feel, most people nowadays purchase on finance & upgrade every 3 to 4 years so they never experience any failures or if they do they’re covered under warranty so it doesn’t effect their pocket in a meaningful way... Most of the expensive high-end luxury German cars will be totalled / written off within the next decade not because of an accident but because some very expensive component needs to be replaced & would be uneconomical to do so... I’ve been seeing this more & more... That’s the problem with high end expensive premium German cars. This over complication is slowly trickling down into the entry level cars such as the new shape polo as I explained earlier. Gone are the days where you purchase a car & keep it for decades & pass it on to your child... the hyperactive market has lead manufacturers to cram as many features, toys & gizmos into their high end models to sell to the next guy on a leased finance plan... they’ve essentially become disposable. This actually isn’t just talking about German cars in particular but most premium / high end modern cars. Even bakkies, take a look at the new Ford Ranger Raptor, an extremely impressive vehicle... but how many issues have plagued the highly strung 2.0 bi-turbo engine... you’ll be lucky to even surpass 200 000 km with that engine... the problem is that the first owner doesn’t really care... he or she will own it for 2 - 4 years within the warranty period & then move on to something better... Most modern cars aren’t built to last because of how the market or more specifically the first owner lifecycle of the vehicle is in the modern world... My point is that perceived quality & actual quality are two very different things. If you want an actual quality vehicle buy a 79-series Land Cruiser, that thing may be as bare bones & as basic as a barn but every single component is built to last & has proven itself over the years... If you want a car that feels quality with luxury premium feeling materials & a reassuring quality thump when you close the door that makes you feel all warm & fuzzy inside well then go buy any modern BMW or VW... but remember that car was not engineered to last much longer than it’s warranty period therefore it has an expiry date & will become junk far sooner than it should. If you don’t believe me then go & look at how any modern German car depreciates... then go look at any old land cruiser from the past 3 decades & ask yourself how that vehicle still demands such as high price tag... that’s because it’s a real quality vehicle. Also take note of the average mileages of each brand when looking... I’m not just blowing smoke up Toyota’s ass, some of their modern cars aren’t as reliable or well built as their older ones, but the 79-series land cruiser or the 100 series or older land cruisers are good examples for the point I’m trying to make.

@Nathan Marais Here’s the bottom line: If you want a premium car for 3 - 7 years... buy German. If you want a quality car for 5 to 20 years... buy Japanese. If you want a fun car... buy American or German performance models. If you want endless shit... buy any modern Land Rover... lol...

Me too. I'm a diesel technician, and vw is a really shit vehicle to work on. All plastic crap that breaks as soon as you touch it. Not only do Toyota make good and reliable cars, they're easy to work on as well. Just boring, but boring is what you want if you don't want to spend all your money on getting from a to b

@Nathan Marais Yeah, & I feel that the high end, expensive modern Land Rovers / Rage Rovers are simply fashion statements for people with more money than brains. I’d be too embarrassed to even be seen in any modern Land Rover. So somewhere in Toyota’s marketing they state that they engineer the Land Cruiser to have a minimum of a 25 year service life in a third world country... their words... A lot of the components, learning & developments from the full fat Land Cruisers trickle down into their other vehicles such as the Hilux, Fortuner etc.. once Toyota makes something they keep using it, they don’t try to reinvent the wheel every year... that’s why you’ll find something as simple as a cruise control stalk in your 3.0 D4-D Hilux is the same thing you’ll find in a 1999 100-series land cruiser or even a 90’s Lexus LS400 & you’ll still find it in a brand new Hilux on the showroom floor today... if it ain’t broken then don’t fix it. Go search for pics of old Toyota & Lexus interiors & you’ll recognise many little components from your Hilux... door handles, window controls etc. & that’s just the stuff you can see. Also this is not a bad thing, this is what makes Toyota Toyota.

@ Matt I agree with you. I have the new Polo TSi. Its full of rattles after 20 000km. Its just a boring and depressing car. Customer service at VW is rubbish as well. If you want a good small hatch, the German built Fiesta is the one to get.

I've seen the P series looks good I have to say. For me just a matter of principle, pocket, wellbeing and peace of mind. I will stick with the tried and tested. That's the one thing I've learnt the hardway.
