I'd stick with the smaller device, personally. However since I want to use my cycling computer on multiple bikes, the trail forks integration in the Garmin 530 is too important to switch to wahoo. I also am fine giving up a bit of a better UI experience for the extra customization in the Garmin ecosystem.

Here's an idea for a function of the compass: when standing still, or starting a ride, make the map point in the direction your wahoo (and this your bike) is pointing. No more riding 20 metres only to find out it's the other direction your supposed to go...

Came here to say this! This is the most annoying thing about the current generation of Wahoo devices. You can wiggle your handlebars all day long but the map doesn’t rotate. To help in that first few minutes off the train wondering how to get on the start of the route would be perfect.

I had a Bolt V1 and it was honestly all the GPS I needed after being frustrated with the complexity of Garmin. Tried a Roam v1 and although I never thought I needed a bigger screen and better mapping I really appreciated it so much that I upgraded to one. This computer is definitely a evolution and they seem to have fixed the small issues, like the buttons. Still all the GPS that most riders would ever need and far far simpler to setup and use than other brands. Good price too
@briansteel3781

I've had both and I think that the larger roam is better due to my failing eyesight ! I think that wahoo could have made the screen a bit larger as there's quite a bit of border to it, they may have missed a trick there.

The screen on the Roam ISN'T a whole lot bigger than the Bolt screen, because the bevels around the screen are huge. The usable screen area is 320x240 on the Bolt vs 400x240 on the Roam. Same exact width -- just a bit more height.

One idea more for using compass. Wahoo app gets current weather and wind speed / direction from a global forecast service. Then unit uses compass and calculates windspeed and direction compared to your cycling direction (and perhaps also a speed). So you can easily see when riding against the wind or enjoying tailwind (or fighting with crosswind).

I realize this is an ad and not a review, but I'm confused why they didn't include a roam vs roam 2.0 comparison. Maybe GCN will do that in the review? I had both the Bolt and the Roam. The one major flaw with Wahoo is in their map displays. They do not include street names on the map. So, when you are navigating without an active route for turn-by-turn directions, you can’t look at the map to find a familiar street name. It annoyed me so much that I switched back to a garmin 830. It is awesome and I love the touch screen.

I sold my Garmin 1030 last year and bought the Bolt V2. The Garmin is soo complicated to use and set it up. I couldn't sync a new route onto the unit or modify the route when I had no WIFI. With the Wahoo you can adjust the route with your phone and bang you continue on the revised route. With the Garmin you should be able to communicate with bluetooth, but it doesn't work 50% of the time. Also the display of the Wahoo is soo much better in the sunlight. The screen from the Wahoo has no reflection at all, the Garmin 1030 was sometimes not readable at all.

Weird question maybe, but I bet the folks at GCN have all the big brands of bike computers around the office. Would it be possible to do a video (or article) with a comparison of functionality when you use them: "stand alone" (no PC/smartphone connection), "no external applications" (no smartphone app or PC software, just USB storage to pull/push files to the device) "no account" (so smartphone apps or applications on PC are allowed but no account needed), and full "I'll install apps/software and sign up & link all my accounts to get stuff functioning" mode Reason being that I'm currently on an 10 yr old device, for which there are (obviously) no android/IOS apps, and as I don't run windows (their software doesn't work on windows 10/11 anyway afaik) so back in the day I had to write my own tool to analyze the memory when it's connected through USB and get actual route data off the device. And while that's still working, I would like to have a device that actually allows me to navigate, without having to jump through hoops, and just have the ability to copy gpx files from and to the device, and install map/firmware updates through the device itself. It would be interesting to see which devices are still (mostly) usable without their proprietary software, and to see what devices will actually keep working if the company behind it ever decides to shut their servers down or no support apps anymore. And for folks like me, a rating for ease of battery replacement for each brand/device would be a nice bonus 😁

@@sabamacx Actually I've asked a few parties to do it, but most (that responded to it) came back with that they don't have the knowlegde or funding (and access to hardware) to actually test (or request that info from manufacturers) to get a reasonable amount of devices included. It's a hard topic to make a video about I think, but even if you don't want to do pure stats, video's you can include most of this info in future video's when new products like this come out, by just coming up with some basic uses like navigation, logging, external sensor data gathering etc and displaying a simple table showing which of those things work with just the device and a generic computer without wahoo/garmin etc software and which of those things will be limited or not usable without that software. I'm just throwing something out there, and it doesn't have to be done in exactly that format. But pointing them towards info that some people might consider interesting when they're buying a 200-600 euro device won't do harm. (I hope 😁)

@@stilerone it's basically summing up facts that anyone can check on their device, so any bias or non truths would probably get called out by owners of the devices right away. It's not like performance comparisons that you can cherry pick. Can you get gpx files from it like it's an USB storage device Y/N Can you copy routes to the device without external software? Y/N Can sensors be paired and data retrieved in an non proprietary format without external software Y/N Can map/firmware updates be installed without external software. Y/N Not really info that you can give biased info about imho. Only thing might be defining navigation in a part a and b for importing routes through usb storage and gpx files, and selecting a point on the map to navigate to on the device itself as those serve different purposes, but I think that with them and some community input you could come up with basic functionality in a table to show on screen while talking about the device. It's not that much work to make some simple points like that a standard thing for those devices.

I wish wahoo would make a more affordable commuter friendly computer maybe with touchscreen and more simple, I love my Bolt but it's overkill for my 2 mile daily work commute.

Why is the border so think around the edges. Make the screen come to the edge of the unit. That said. I’m happy with my v2 bolt.

Is it possible to connect the Roam with Garmin accessories like Cardio belt and Varia radar?
@paulwheeless1080
@paulwheeless1080 Год назад
Wahoo head units are compatible with Garmin's Varia. almost all cycling head units are compatible with accessories using ANT+ and Bluetooth. I use the Wahoo app on my android phone and it connects nicely with my Garmin Heart Rate Monitor and Garmin Cadence sensor. I use the "Ride with GPS" android app for navigating and its integration with my Garmin Varia. Rode today with my Pixel 6pro phone mounted on a quadlock, running Both Ridewith GPS and Wahoo apps, safely listening to tunes on Spotify with my Shokz bone-conducting headphones!

I have the original Roam, and the biggest problem with it is that if you need to upload a route/track on the go, it just takes forever! I create my routes in Komoot and synching them to the Roam via the home Wifi is fast. But, if you try to load a track whilst on the road, you need lot of patience!! Mine takes more than 6 MINUTES! The new Komoot track actually appears in the App on the phone within seconds, and then the transfer to the device take more than 6 minutes.... unacceptable in my opinion....so I've gone back to the good old phone navigation.

Dual Band GPS? So hopefully it works this time. Can't believe that my iPhone has my location within a second, but a dedicated GPS device from Wahoo takes minutes to find a very weak signal.

As a long term Wahoo user, I was really looking forwards to pulling the trigger and getting a new Roam to replace my old ELEMNT work-horse. But after this "new" release..! Seriously is that it..? Sorry Wahoo - the Karoo 2 just looks and feels like a much better proposition for the same money.

Gutted. I held out for the Roam v2 for nearly 12 months until I couldnt resist and bought the original one only 4 months ago. Wish companies like Wahoo, Garmin etc would do some sort of trade in / upgrade scheme.

I’d pick neither and use my phone on a quadlock mount because you need your phone anyway and your phone does way more. Take AirPods too so when I’m riding I can change what I’m listening to or view Strava or whatever I want on my phone screen

@salzhaltigersalzhaufen586
@salzhaltigersalzhaufen586 Год назад
Well a compas could be cool if you got lost on a bike ride and your bike computer cant change the route for you it might just say head north to get back on track and maybe just shows you a compas so you now where to go Just had some struggle with this on a bike packing trip after an overnighter in the woods because I went a little further then my end/start point to find a nice place for the night and my phone (I dont have a bike computer at the moment) just told me to head west to get to the starting point so yeah maybe thats an aplictaion where this could be used even though it is rather simple. Well relating to my bikepacking adventures etc. I guess I would go for the roam even though I like to ride for performance but I wont buy two headunits if I only have an entry level road bike (trek domane al2 disc not the fastest but I still somke most people out on the road cuz they are just damn fucking slow lol)

You didn’t talk about battery life… or I didn’t hear it. Wahoo says you can get 17 hours on the roam, but I was on a long ride and it died far from home. Luckily I had a usb battery. They should have extended the battery life instead of adding unused hardware.😮

Sounds lime a really lazy device to me, nothing innovative, all the features described are already on garmin and hammerhead units. Hopefully the sponsorship pays a few bills. Imho sounds very underwhelming
