If Weatherby could figure out a way to take a 76mm Naval gun shell and neck it down to 6.5mm, they would do it.

Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin pathetic? 6.5 would still put things down out to the same accessable range as all of those other cartridges you listed , point is that it's still a cartridge and is still deadly
@jmax.6587
@jmax.6587 6 лет назад
Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin there are videos of people shooting 1,600 yards so you are wrong , I wouldn't take game more than 800 yards though because of shot placement but there is no doubt in my mind that it is still deadly past that. That was my entire point , also I want to clarify , saying curse words doesn't make you seem any bigger , more correct , or better , this is the internet , no need for that. I agree that the creedmore may not hit as hard put to that same range but it is still enough to cause harm , I wouldn't want to be shot at by that thing at any range closer than 2,500 yards , sure it's a hard shot but it can cause harm.
@jmax.6587
@jmax.6587 6 лет назад
Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin that actually sounds good , won't be so much to burn a barrel but enough to get more energy and a flatter bullet trajectory , and if you still wanted a heavier hitting bullet just get it in a higher grain

unless you are poking holes in paper the teminal distance on game is about the same. Personally for me anything beyond 400 yds on game is taking chances. I have also witnessed long shots on game not quite hit the mark usually do to the shooter. end results were either lost game or long treks. But to each their own I suppose.

Owners of a 6.5/300 Wby should understand it for what it is. This is not a round that you are going to use to plink varmints all day with like a 22-250 or similar round. If it is used at the range say only a few times a year including sighting in for a hunt or two, the barrel just may last 8, 9, 10 years or so and even maybe longer depending on how it is cared for during the range sessions in allowing the barrel to cool down somewhat between rounds. Also too, today's more modern powders are somewhat easier on barrels than the powders were decades ago. Same would also apply to the 26 Nosler to a somewhat lesser degree. The 6.5/300 isn't new if I recall. Roy tinkered around with it years ago.............To all you barrel burning detractors of this cartridge....LIGHTEN UP!........It is not your $$$$ buying these rifles for those who wish to own one. And, if the barrels do burn up within say 500 to 1000 rounds, then it is their money NOT YOURS used for the replacement barrel..........

I've been playing with these loads since the 1970s and it's still fun and fabulous today. In those days, buying a Weatherby rifle was comparable to "normal" people buying a house. Big case, the size of a man's arm, with a 6.5 mm bullet screwed into it, and then shoot it from a shoulder-rifle. LOL!!! LOL!!! I love it!! Good job, guys.

@drews.3794
@drews.3794 5 лет назад
Hold up? Most all carbon fiber barrel companies use a #3 contour barrel and wrap them. So the actual bore life would be no different than a 100% steel barrel. In theory the Carbon wrapped barrel should be 6 times stiffer.

No doubt about it, the 6.5/300 Weatherby is a sizzling 6.5 cartridge. But for me here in Nevada the 6.5 PRC is fast enough with enough ft./lbs. of energy to drop a bull elk at 500 yards and an antelope at 1,000 yards. So my 6.5 PRC fires from a Browning X-Bolt Pro. Love that mountain rifle. But Weatherby's new Ti actioned rifle is another benchmark for Weatherby and for factory mountain rifles.

I'm aggravated! I have had a 264 WM ever since 1963 in a Rem 700 with a serial starting with "one" and just four digits. All the gun writers beat it down saying that it was over bore capacity and hard on barrels and, Win didn't cut the chamber just right, the throat is too short. Now, 56 years later, that 6.5's are all the rage some are saying they need a hotter 6.5? burp!!!! PS: Mine can still shoot sub-moa, I did not make it a practice to load it HOT!
@1135jasrlee
@1135jasrlee 6 лет назад
Ray Sarchet: In a recent survey of all the 264’s (including all the 6.5’s) out there today, the .264 WM came in 1st overall! One reason is it’s agreeable nature with barrels compared to the new ones. The 6.5X.300 Weatherby is the fastest and the most overbored, and apparently lethal to barrel life. I was attracted to the 6.5X.300 Weatherby at first, but I am not made out of money!

More of a novelty round to me and don't get me wrong I like the idea of the cartridge but it isn't practical. I would think of owning one without ordering three barrels at a time and it is very wasteful on powder. A word to the wise , shoot 2 shots and let it cool . Then 2 more and let it cool completely ect , ect , ect till you get it where you want it and you will not shoot the throat out ! It’s a hunting rifle not a target rifle ! If you ( need ) to shoot 5 and 10 shot groups then buy a target rifle!…..

I know this is an old comment but I have both and the 6.5 is not much better than the 300 mainly because I have a vanguard 6.5 with no break and it weights less. My .264 win with a heavy barrel (12lbs rifle) is a pleasure to shoot and is just a better powder volume for the 6.5mm than the Weatherby version. Just my 2 cents good luck out there.

Yes but what does it do that the 300 or 7mm Weatherby does not already do for long range Elk hunter or Prong Horn Hunter? Absolutely nothing of significance if not looking at numbers on paper or a electrons on a computer screen. It is a solution looking for a problem or "me too" novelty of being able to say you have a 6.5 uber magnum! Compared to what Roy Weatherby did in 1944 this is actually a step backwards. Who compares anything Weatherby has designed to a 30-06. The 300 Win Mag is about 30% hotter than a 30-06 and the 300 Weatherby is at least 30% hotter than a 300 Win Mag so it is so many orders of magnitude hotter than a 30-06 that comparison is not remotely meaningful. You might as well be comparing a 30-06 to a 45-70 Govt.....It is an apple to oranges comparison! If you want to compare something tothe 30-06 which is a fatastic all around cartridge with long barrel life maybe compare a 6.5-06 A Square to the 30-06.
@andrewhirsch6472
@andrewhirsch6472 5 лет назад
Indeed. I suspect Weatherby knew as well as anyone that this would be (at best) a fad cartridge with tepid sales in the long run. However, its introduction helps with PR and advertising on a larger scale, letting youngsters learn the brand and the company's high-velocity philosophy on hunting cartridges. But this thing? Its heavy recoil combined with low barrel life will deter owners from practicing as much as they should--always a bad thing with long-range hunting. A lot can--and does--go wrong with shots beyond the 300-yard mark if the shooter isn't intimately familiar with what the rifle, the load and the scope can and cannot do in wildly varying conditions.

Can you put rounds in this gun enough to do what you need done? yes. I'm guessing and correct me if I'm wrong that you are an AR fanboi that will choose rounds over single shot accuracy. Besides the Montana made Nemo firearms I will not trust other AR rifles for accuracy. I will stick with my 270 Weatherby Mag until I can get a Nemo rifle. Not a Nemo rep btw. That barrel won't last much longer than about 500-1000 rounds. Even standard 300WM doesn't last much longer than 500 rounds. Those magnum rounds and necked down rounds are over bored and over pressured. Eats the throat and the rifling right out of the barrel. I prefer traditional rounds such as 308 or 30-06. Cheap, accurate, low recoil, long range, hard hitting, ammo is easy to find, and the barrel will last upwards of 10,000 rounds.

Salty Steel the 3006 has been around for a long time ,and there's good reason for it .i think by about 5 yrs this 6.5x300 will be obsolete , first the expense of ammo , even compared to a 300 win mag , I think will go the way on wssm few and far between
@martinstiastny7679
@martinstiastny7679 7 лет назад
thesheepman220 I can't go along with that . . . totally. The problem with the WSSM cartridge line was that it was terrible at feeding and you couldn't reload it to factory equivalent. The 6.5x300 has been around since the 1950's. Strictly a hand loaders cartridge, but as it was pointed out, a barrel burner. For a hunter of medium and big game, it should do well. Obviously not for varmint shooting (to much recoil, and you'll burn out the barrel), but a shot at a stray coyote while antelope hunting, why not. Quality bullets on sheep, goats, American and African antelope should be good, but really no better then a 257 Weatherby (another barrel burner if you shot it like a semi auto), same with the 25/06. The 30/06, as in the 30 caliber of 1906, nothing odd or ought about it, is a fabulous cartridge. I would never be without a couple. I do like the 257 Weatherby and used it for pronghorn and in Africa (took a Leopard in Namibia, instant kill), and I'm currently in love with another old cartridge, the 9.3x62. Took bear in Alaska with it and plan on using it in Africa in July. 286 grain bullet. Not a barrel burner, but a stellar performer. I'll doubt I'll get a 6.5x300, but the 6.5 Creedmoor intrigues me.

Whats the barrel life of something that shoots 3500FPS?
@Nick-sx6jm
@Nick-sx6jm 3 года назад
Speed isnt what kills barrels. Look at AR-15's, they shoot well over 3k and it takes like 10k rounds to burn a barrel. Its how much powder in relation to the caliber that eats away at each end of the barrel. With that said this round is way overbore and will probably get 800-1000 rounds if you take care of it.

Fun fact. weatherby didn’t invent the 6.5x300. It was originally called the 6.5 Weatherby-Wright-Hoyer magnum. Designed by Lt. Col. Paul Wright and the first rifle was built by Alex Hoyer of central Pa in the 50’s. The reason the weatherby name was on the original spec of the cartridge was the parent case used is the 300wby mag.

Several places on the internet are selling between 1600-1800 for the non-range certified offering and 2100 up in the Range Certified gun. If you can get the ammo expect to pay $90-110 per box. We have one gun at our local shop for under $1800 and four boxes of ammo, i didn't check the price on the ammo. I'm looking at the Weatherby Ultra Lite in camo in this round but will have to put it on layaway or four pay if they ever get it in.

@rafaelmarcano2057

No. This is not an automatic rifle. This is a bolt action rifle. You fire just a few rounds and allowed the barrel to cool off for a few minutes. Meanwhile, back a t the ranch, you grab a Corona Light (diet beer) and when the barrel is not so F****g hot, you fire again just a few more rounds. BTW... this is a hunting rifle. If you are in desperate need of hunting just just paper, then I strongly recommend a bow and arrow system. They don't get so hot when you fired 175 arrows in just 5 minutes. Salud!

A real nice (and expensive!) cartridge. One thing I like about the cartridge is that it has very little freebore (.2037") thus enhancing its accuracy potential. I've had a number of Weatherby Mark V's; however, in this case, I think I'll skip Weatherby's response to the 26 Nosler and stay with the 264 Winchester Magnum. I don't need the extra 100 fps muzzle velocity - which shrinks even further at distant targets, and uses an extra 15 to 18 grains of powder compared to the 264 Win Mag. Besides, I don't enjoy forking over hundreds of dollars and waiting months for a new barrel to be installed, every 500 to 600 rounds. Shooting Times Magazine tested this cartridge with a 26" barreled AccuMark and only got 3253 fps and 3327fps with 140 grain Nosler and Swift bullets, respectively. Moreover, this way-overbore cartridge needs a 28 to 30" barrel to approach its velocity potential. Who wants to carry around a gun that long and cumbersome? I'm sure (the anti-overbore) P.O. Ackley would also have had some unkind comments about the 6.5-300 WBY, even with access to the slower burning powders that are available today. Even better, my 270 Weatherby shot 3,550 fps with IMR 7828 and 130 grain Noslers in a 26" Shilen barrel. The accuracy life was 2,000 rounds, and more accurate than this barrel burner. The 150 grain Nosler partitions consistently gave .60" MOA.

It’s not that it is flat, it’s the over 24 MOA wind constant meaning less than half the wind favor of a .308. At 500 yards for a 10 mph cross wind it means only 10 inches of favor vs 25 inches of favor.

Back in '74 I saved up $500 for a new Weatherby Mark V in .300 Weatherby, a 3-9 variable scope, four $20 boxes of Weatherby factory loads and the burdensome Washington sales tax. I thought about ordering it in 30-06, but I finally decided to go whole hog with flat trajectory. Especially when I got out on the Montana plains looking for pronghorn and on a couple 400 yard deer opportunities In the Missouri Breaks, I really appreciated what I had. However, I recognise the limits of practicality when it comes to being over bore capacity. 300 Weatherby is as far as I want to stretch it. Putatively, if .300 Winchester would have been an option then in the Mark V, I think that it would have been the better choice. For ten per cent less IMR 4831 capacity, I would have gotten three per cent less velocity . That .300 Weatherby case necked down to 6.5 strikes me as just a fuel inefficient, barrel burning extreme to the point of being silly like unto the .50 SW revolver or a drum magazine on a semiautomatic rifle. Remember that unburned powder is not a propellent and an asset. It is a projectile and a burden.

The big question is why? Expensive to shoot, too small for large game and hard on barrels. If you want a 6.5 get a proven Creedmore. Better yet, get a 300 Wetherby and shoot light, long range bullets, that way you can save your money for beer at deer camp.
