Cavity closer? To prevent the plasterboard being cold on the back side where the cavity is....and causing a cold spot on the inside, leading to condensation and mould growth from the heat in the house. A thermal bridge via the open cavity.
@Benzknees
@Benzknees Год назад
OMG, Bodge-it & Run window fitters have been at it again! Kango'd inner blockwork given a good old shake to loosen all the mortar. Inadequate lintol bearing on broken blockwork with no padstones. No cavity closure. No vertical DPC. No insulation at closure. Used inappropriate lintol, with no built-in insulation, and which seems to be leaning over more than the sloping sides would normally as well as not being square in opening. That's going to suffer all manner of cold bridging, with interstitial damp soaking into the plasterboard causing it to soften & fail. Plus bonding doesn't like damp areas. And the plaster at the top corners is likely to crack if the end bearings fail under load. But I guess the window fitters will be long gone before the householder realises it. Anyway, in the circumstances, it's remarkable to have worked round all those problems & hidden all the window fitters' bodges with a nice finish in only 3½ hrs!

Another superb video, loads of information and relaxing to watch. That too wide inner opening is the result of not being able to use an angle grinder in an occupied house. There are dust catchers for angle grinders but nobody has made an affordable tool that will cut an opening in an 11 inch wall from the outside. I had a diamond chain saw that would do it but the chains were £200 so I am back to chain drilling down the wall to keep it on the line.

Festool do a nice 125mm angle grinder with a very good dust catching attachment. It's more suited for chasing but it will cut a nice straight reference edge and you could drill and chip the remaining brick or block. They only release a tiny amount of dust on the initial part of the plunge, thereafter no dust escapes.

Great work and the foam is a good idea but really the cavity needs closing with insulated cavity closers. The builders who constructed my house didn't use these and I have cold spots on EVERY window reveal, resulting in mould/ wallpaper curling off. Having to cut back plaster on all reveals in every room to remedy this - something I wish I knew before I decorated! Still, nice plastering - great of you to share.

Fantastic video as always. What I like is that you cover real world scenarios, other RU-vidrs do tutorials on plastering a new wall….but everything is perfect, the prep is done and usually there are no sockets, rad brackets etc. One point to make: there should be a DPC fitted - which goes vertically, it’s tucked into the cavity and comes across a bit of the window frame. Then when your plasterboard goes in, it can’t touch the external brickwork. Any DPC poking out by the window frame can later be trimmed. Cavity closures could’ve been used. Any plasterboard or bonding touching the external skin is very likely to track damp and eventually the window company will get a recall from the customer. However correct damp arrangements are the responsibility of the window company…..it’s good that as a plasterer you are thinking about this…but really it shouldn’t be a consideration.

I always prefer the grey bonding over the pink as it's much better to work with and cleans up easier as well 👍 For the more experienced plasterers you can always use some renderlite finish when mixing the bonding and it sets in about 10-15mins 😊

I`m a window Installer that does this often. Sometimes I do the lot, sometimes I get a plasterer in, depending how busy I am. The only things I would suggest.... ?.Have a few oddments of skip dived kingspan on the van an wedge that in as a thermal break /cavity closer which also gives you more to foam /dab the board to. Also , if the lintel is flat and down level with the window, I would use a couple of self drilling drywall screws to fix board to the head. I know technically you shouldn`t drill lintels but hey! I normally skim the whole wall if it`s a small wall but to be fair , that`s because I`m not overly confident at blending, might give blending a go next time. Great tradesman though, loving these vids!

Great channel, love your work, can I just add ,, if you added a couple of handfuls of cement into the adhesive mix it would of gone off in literally a quarter off the time, that way negates the need for the Bonding coat because your actually able to get a more than acceptable finish ready to plaster with the application of adhesive!

Hi Kirk, thanks for reply. I rmbr you said to post another comment cos you don't get alerts for replies of replies. I used a roller to put sbr on. Urgh there was so many variables on the job. It was cold, the air was damp, half the ceiling was replaced due to flood damage. However i sbr'd the new plasterboard to make it all go off at same time. I thought maybe it had frozen in the van and thawed but it worked fine on the plasterboard, no blisters so wasn't faulty sbr. They were like little bubbles you get sometimes going over bonding but they didn't do the rice krispie poppin, they just stayed there and was flippin thousands of them. Just my luck 😂 a lot of them flattened during the process but some stayed the whole way thru and could only get rid of them when half the ceiling had gone dark. I did speedskim after laying on but don't think it was that either. I took pics but obv no way to show you. I was quite surprised at it tbh. Thanks mate 👍
