It's worth testing for artex before skimming because you'll never know unless you go disturbing your lovely flat skimmed ceilings. My 1981 built house had it but my 'new' 1930s house which has had it boarded over does NOT. Got a few samples taken by a local bloke who sent it away and provided a report. So now, as much as it is messy, I have no issue with drilling or cutting anywhere in the house. Given the hundreds I have saved by watching Kirk's videos and doing my own plastering, I can afford it!!!

Put all switches and sockets in one and knot it around the wires. Because nothing worse than a blob of plaster shorting the circuit or worse blowing a notch in ya finishing trowel 💥 oh happy days.

Hi. A quick question. For some time now the plaster has been coming in a new form which dries faster, indicated by a green triangle on the bag telling you of this. Is it possible to get plaster that doesn't have this additive? Once upon a time, depending on the size of the room, I could get two walls on the go. Sadly, my knee joints are starting to let me down and I find it difficult to keep up with the plaster, the result being I can only cover one wall at a time. Ceilings now have to be done in 'half's' and feathered in. Can you offer any advice regarding this, please? Thanks

I always get the sockets off, wago the ring back together and tuck the wires in out the way. You make it look way too easy plastering around them 😂..... but for those watchin, trust me, its alot more faff than it looks. Its deffo easier with them out the way. Same with that light fitting. If youre less skilled than kirk (all of us), then make youre life easier and get them wires inside the patress boxes.... but make sure theyre safe with wago clips.

You want to be careful using SBR kirk, it totally kills suction, as you know PVA re-emulsifies when finish hits it, but that's good cos it forms that grip. Speaking from experience, I SBR'D the exact same pattern as that. It held for 4 months, then the customer rang to say some had come down, I ended up taking the lot down and it looked like it had never been plastered at all! It just came down in huge sheets. I ended up using bostik grit coat , that did it. I'm very wary of SBR, I'm not using it anymore. And if you're doing the vids for beginners maybe you should explain the suction/no suction issues with PVA and SBR .

Hi Kirk, completely unrelated to this vid, but hopefully you could help me, I’ve gone to a job today with damp issues, and the previous builder has dot and dabbed 65mm insulation board onto a single skin brick wall. Very old house in Kingston, London. I’ve take off all the insulation boards which had all lifted off the dabs due to the damp, which had seemingly re activated the dabs as they were soft and easy to manipulate. How would you attack this job? Ideally I’ve got to work to the existing skirting line, which now is 75mm or so off the wall, rather than taking the skirting off. I was thinking of using insulated board but sticking it on with foam adhesive, after sbr’ing the brick of course. Or framing the wall and trying to keep it to the skirting depth. Cheers mate

Wasn't too bad to be fair but you knew about it as the mix got firmer. Battery drill came out for the next job; old textured ceiling from the 80s or earlier. Played it safe and skimmed it like this.

Artex can be found with or without asbestos depending on its age. Older properties are more likely to have the asbestos fibres. Whilst white asbestos is less problematic than blue or brown it should always be treated with caution as inhaling fibres from cutting can be dangerous. Under the CDM Regulations 2015 the contractors should pass a formal Health and Safety File to the home owner and this file will then stay with the building for life and be periodically updated as things change. You cannot be so naive as to expect the home owner to remember to inform all following contractors about the asbestos Artex that is now hidden, you owe it to your fellow tradesmen.
@Onthetrowel
@Onthetrowel 4 месяца назад
Please don't call me nieve. In all my years of working for the public I have never, not even once been told about this file that should be updated. Not 1 single builder or homeowner has even mentioned it to me EVER... So I wouldn't say I'm nieve. Now what I expect from you is a link to the the website where this is stated &/or a link to where this file can be obtained. There's one thing about me, if I'm wrong I'll admit it and if I can learn something new to improve then I will. This is the first time I've heard of this and I'm interested in learning more
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 4 месяца назад
@@Onthetrowel Please don't take offence, I meant naive in its true sense, which is without knowledge that you have clearly identified - you do not know about this legislation and neither do most small builders. If you had worked for any main contractors you ought to have been aware of the CDM Regs that have applied to all main building works since 1995 and in 2015 they were extended to small works that would include domestic premises. The fact that the majority of small builders don't know about these regulation is probably because the HSE haven't widely advertised it or more importantly, enforced it. They have threatened to focus on small builders at various times and when/if they do they will make examples , I'm sure. The object of these Regs is to create a safe working environment during building works and any future operations. One of these requirements is to produce a Health and Safety File that will inform any future trades and it would be the building owner's responsibility to ensure that it is kept up to date, this file goes with the building (like the service history does with a car). That file would be ideal in this instance because as you say, following trades will be unaware of the Artex under the plaster skim. Your portion of the file in this instance would be very brief and less than a page long. Prior to 1995 on large jobs there was often a need to provide a 'Maintenance File' that was for the same purpose, so its not new. To get more information just Google 'Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015'. There was a 2023 update but I don't believe that this applies.
@Onthetrowel

I get it now, this makes sense and it's a fantastic idea. Do you have one of these files for your house?
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 4 месяца назад
@@Onthetrowel In principle yes I have a pack of information that can be referred to when I am no longer in residence. I'm wearing a new trowel in, it's OK for putting on but it's not ready for toweling up and polishing yet

Quality job kirk 👏 was the scrim tape over a crack in the artex? Just wondering 🤔 my Mrs wants me to plaster over my livingroom ceiling. The ceiling has exact same fan texture.

😂😂 I used to give my beginners/improvers a larrupping if I caught them 'slapping' the trowel on the return from the long-stroke - as 'most' dig it in and it creates an ugly feature as it dries out due to the variable thickness at that point - good to see your action doesn't dig in Kirk - but I still cringe every time I hear it 😵🥴

We had ours done recently (1999 build) and the plasterers scraped the ceilings off then sealed then plastered - they didn't do a great job. Any benefits of scraping vs not scraping? Everyone I spoke to said not scraping would cause issues further down the line
@Onthetrowel

Just depends how thick it is mate. I've scraped hundreds but I try not to if I can
