I’m almost 82 and those metal cabinets were all I knew and loved. I still use my old chrome kitchen table and chairs to this day. I love vintage. I guess you could call me vintage. 😂 I love this video of restoration. Keep up the good work. That is a beautiful vintage sink cabinet! Imagine if you have the funds to send it off to get sand blasted to the bare metal, then have an automotive paint shop paint it with automotive or ceramic paint.

People need to leave their bad comments to themselves. I think the metal cabinet is totally awesome. It has total character, VINTAGE CHARACTER which some people really don't get it. You either like it or you just don't get it.

Once you reattach the drawer fronts, you could fill the drawer cavities with spray foam to lock them in place. They also would have a more solid feel.

Hubby wanted to put a dishwasher in and I nixed it. I prefer to wash by hand. Looking forward to seeing the metal cabinet finished and the sink in. ❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍

I love your guy's work and how much of yourself & love you put into each of your projects. I'm alone, so i just hand wash my dishes and i feed my cat in a glass dish. It's so much faster for cleaning. I love those old cabinets and sinks, clawfoot tubs etc.

I’d LOVE to have an old drain board sink! We have a dishwasher and since our kids moved out I only use it on holidays. It’s such a waste of hot water.

Our house came with a dishwasher. I use it as a cabinet for storage. I hate dishwashers, I’ve been washing dishes by hand since I was a little girl. I’m 72 and still prefer to wash dishes by hand. I don’t care what anyone says. You dance to the beat of a different drummer, it’s cool. 👍

I had that sink and base growing up in a Dorchester, Mass., 3 family, in the 70's. I loved the drainboard sink. I can't wait to see the new finish.

Having refinish those metal cabinets before, if the pitting steel is really bothering you, you can just use Bondo and fill it in sand it down till it smooth. Once it's painted you would never know they were there.

I love the old cabinet, we had those in our house, when I was young. I don't have a dishwasher, I'm the dishwasher, lol.

Folks need to recognize that you guys are keeping things out of the landfill and not buying from another country. Fixing up old stuff is so worth the effort. Better quality then most things you can buy new. Finding rare gems that you love and self-gratification of restoring it is the big bonus of the process. Thanks for taking us along your journey!

I always put a piece of vinyl flooring in the bottom of my sink cabinet to protect the cabinet from leaks be it water or cleaning products. My grandma had a cabinet like that and the sink too.❤

Doug, fabricate a wood spacer for inside of the drawer cover to replace that cardboard spacer. It will prevent collapse of the cover when installing the drawer pulls.

Renovating a sink is not unlike renovating and old car. Lots of rust and grime. Vintage is also popular today and you have a wonderful vintage sink.

How in the world can someone have watched the (often miraculous!) transformations you guys have made in the past, and even QUESTION your vision and ability to bring it to life? Don't worry too much over people's opinions. I've been around builders and carpenters all my life and I can say you are the most detail oriented and precise builder I've ever seen! You do an amazing job! And as for your color choices and materials, I for one love every choice you've made. Keep on with what you are doing. As for the naysayers, who cares. That Metal Cabinet you are restoring is going to be fantastic. When they are kept up, everything will work so smooth. YES! you have rusting problems, but that is only because these Metal cabinets were alway used in low cost housing & rentals where people didn't care or maintain them properly. I look forward to see, the finished product. I know it is going to dazzle everyone. Art in Calif.

i believe that weird padding was to minimize flexing on the drawer fronts because they are hollow. but, you can always cut a piece of 1x4 or 1x6 to fit in there which will help to stiffen it up and minimize flexing and bending...........(attach with sticky tape)

You are not alone. I don't have a TV, cell phone, dishwasher or clothes drier. For many years I didn't own a wash machine, but my arthritis is too bad to be able to handle large loads of hand washing. I bought a washer and dryer set when I was caring for my elderly parents. I had to wash all the bedding and a large load of clothing EVERY NIGHT. I could not have handled this by hand or sitting in a laundromat every day. But this was an exception for me. When the drier quit for the second time, I didn't feel any desire to keep taking it apart and repairing it every few years. Now I hang all my laundry. I do not feel this complicates my life at all. I love that some of you young people out there are living a less commercial life-style by making your own, recycling, and refinishing. Good for you.

We had the exact same sink and cabinets in our kitchen. We lived there from 1970 to 1976. btw I have the best dishwasher ever made. Me.

My grandma had a drain board sink and I swoon over everyone I’ve seen. They are a great design regardless of the dishwasher issue.

I have used the Rustoleum appliance paint to refinish a 1970s vent hood, it works well, I did primer it though with a product called STYX and I heat dried the final paint, it was easy, I just sat it in the hot sun. A final test of the finish was a scratch test using a 000 steel wool pad with light pressure, as if I were cleaning it. It held very well. I did use 3 coats of the paint. On my cabinet handles that I wanted to keep but change colors on, I boiled them in Simple Green, brushed them with a tooth brush and then applied an automotive brake caliper paint and again heat dried them. So far with cleaning and regular use everything is holding up beautifully. If you want to further protect the surface I might suggest a final coverage with clear brake caliper paint. Why brake caliper paint ? Because it is made with polymers that withstand heat, water, and wear from road grime hitting it at 80 miles per hour. I only intended painting it one time, lol.

I love those cabinets I want them to for my kitchen, no mice holes or anything! My Mom had a set of those the whole kitchen and I love them, you do you! I like a dishwasher I have a small one! I don't even know why people still question you. By now they should understand that every project you do is done because its what you like and want in your home. I wouldn't want new cabinets because they are only made from paper now and don't have shelves in them anymore. That's my preference, but lots of people like new cheap cabinets because they look good even though they can't be used. I'm still not going to debate on someone's video why they shouldn't use new cheap cabinets.

I love my metal cabinets . Way more room in those drawers than the new junk. Our hone came with a room full of them! I used all but one in my laundry room. Theyre so awesome! And i have never owned a dishwasher, and never will.😊

This is exciting!! It took me longer to take mine apart. I might keep the Elgin logo. In the 50’s it was the #1 product used in all aspects of new home construction. I still have the original Elgin tub fixtures. Sorry for the folks who r not open to new ideas. And thank u for sharing and not letting the negative beat u down.

Those old sinks are very wanted by many, they are really expensive, most of them have to be refinished, my house isn’t real old, I needed a sink, but my kitchen is too small for those big old sinks, but I love them, I really wanted one, I can’t wait to see your “new” sink and cabinet finished and installed!

You could apply a thin layer of JB Weld on the pitted areas. Once sanded the rust pits will disappear.

Please look into powder coating. I know it sounds wild but I had a 1950s tool box. Had it sandblast and powdercoated. And still haven't chipped it.
