You were spot on with horrendous odor of the cotton chameleon yarn in the past, so I’m going to trust you on this one. No one wants to work with musty or dour wash rag smell.

I bought some yarn at Joann's once, acrylic, that smell like petroleum when I started working with it. I tried to ignore the smell but I could not. It was awful working with that smelly yarn. I appreciate yarn reviews that mention how a yarn smells. I returned a public library book once and told the librarian it smelled like cheese, one of those really bad smelling cheeses. I think a previous borrower had read the book with bad smelling cheese on their hands.

The smell is caused by leftover sericin in the silk (the gummy residue from the silk cocoon). Most silk is already degummed, but poorer qualities(?) may not have been as thoroughly degummed as they should. If you buy the yarn with the smell my personal experience is that no amount of effort will ever get rid of it completely. I feel like the process has to be done correctly in the first place. The yarn I purchased that had the smell literally had a note with it saying it was a natural smell for silk yarn. No one wants to wear something that smells like dead fish!

I know this was a year ago….but, thank you for your explanation. I have noticed, before, that silk has that exact smell. Especially when it has the natural knobby texture. I thought I was the only one. Lol. Thanks. I hope Crystal got to see this !!

Some yarns with silk in them can have “silk glue” in it too that can cause a weird odor - I was actually contemplating buying this yarn before this review I also can’t stand yarn that doesn’t smell clean

I knit with a lot of silk blends and 100% silk. I've never had it smell bad. It might have gotten damp at some time to smell like that. But it is beautiful. Next time I go to Joanns in person, I need to check it out.

many yarns with ramie, linen, or natural silk/silk noile have a rotten plant smell. it does disapate with some open air. in the 80s in the fashion industry we would get boxes of sweaters in this type of yarn. they were packed freshly steamed and sealed in poly bags and then shipped in the heat for thousands of miles. we all got headaches when we would open the boxes. we would lay them out, turn on fans and come in the next day hoping they would smell ok. they usually were much better just being out of the plastic bags--- which also have a smell by the way. sorry- i know how it can irritate your eyes and throat. you need a nice walk in the fresh air. we appreciate your persistence crocheting smelly stuff!! lol

I TOTALLY agree with you, a yarn HAS to smell good, I once was gifted a small cake of yarn from an over priced company that even you said you wouldn't purchase from again, it's been a couple years..... It STILL stinks!!!!! But........ I recently purchased from an Indy dyer that I saw on another podcast (she had a monthly subscription featuring one of my favorite shows)... OMG!!! That yarn smells AMAZING!!! I don't know what kind of wool wash she used, but I'm tempted to ask her...I can't stop smelling it!!! 🤣😂🤣😂

I used to have a raw silk shirt years ago and it always had a smell, no matter how many times I washed it. I loved the way it looked and felt, but I didn't like wearing it because I didn't like the smell. I've had other raw silk shirts that didn't have that funky smell. Maybe it's something from when they process it.

In Canada they must legally sell for posted price all she needs is a screenshot of the website or a video clip and go into the store and talk to the manager. Not certain about US.

I think you should tell JoAnn's asap. I used to work a great furniture store and there was one time we had a similar problem. There was strike a the port-of-entry and our furniture sat on a ship for months!! It was gross and we refused the shipment altogether. I know with the pandemic and labor issues, this might have happened to your yarn too. I would want to know if I was JoAnn's or Lion Brand Yarn. I would want to make it right. On another note, thanks for your RU-vid content. It really cheers me up. I love the work you do for anti-bullying with Lion Brand and your charity work at your local animal shelter. Just thanks so much.

I was so excited to see another video from you today! NO it is NOT JUST YOU. I ordered some Flannel material from JoAnn's about 1.5 years ago and the material arrived Damp, and it STUNK like your saying right now. I had to Wash all the Material as soon as I unpacked it (like immediately), plus the Box arrived Damaged and very Dirty (worse than normal)! It was so bad that I told myself that I will NEVER order Material from JoAnn's IN ANOTHER STATE again. I have not ordered Locally, it was shipped to me from another State. So, if the Material is damp and stinks and the Yarn is damp and stinks, then SOMETHING IS WRONG Somewhere... Thanks Crystal, your Great.

It looks like it's been made with raw silk and you are correct, raw silk has an odor about it. I've worked with raw silk fabric and it has the very same odor.

Crystal, I had a problem with a Joann’s purchase and I CALLED their customer service dept. I like speaking to a person when possible to resolve an issue. When you have someone’s name they are usually happy to resolve things more than just by email. I’ve even had them need to look into something and they called me right back with an answer.

When my Mom had to get an odor out of yarn or anything else for that matter, she used take balled up newspapers & put it in a container or a ziplock bag with the yarn and wait a few days. The newspaper would absorb the smell. Paper towels work pretty well, too. Sometimes, I use this technique to get the smell of onions or garlic out of my plastic storage containers. Works great!

Oh boy! A "2" from the Queen of yarn! They need to do some checking up on their warehouse storage if they want to keep selling that yarn! Just bought some silk and love the way it works up and it does have a slightly funny smell. Mine is a Italian brand from a yarn shop.I hope to freshen up the smell after blocking.

Thank you for the heads-up, Crystal. I've never used a silk mix or silk yarn period. My budget doesn't let me go for the higher priced fiber blends, unless I can find it on sale for a good price or on clearance. But, then if I like the clearance priced yarn of course the yarn is discontinued. That's my Murphy's law kicking in. Lol! I do appreciate your suffering through that stinky yarn for us all. Be sure to set it outside away from your good stuff. Don't need to be contaminating your beautiful stash. ✌️💕🐞🦋🐌

Thank you! I appreciate your opinion! I'm at Joann's right now and it's on clearance but after listening to the beginning of your video I smelled it and it is yucky! The other yarn around it doesn't smell! And I thought it was rather scratchy! Color blends are pretty though! 😉

Oh my goodness! You just described my two most unfavorite smells! Whenever I get a whiff of either of these smells my immediate thoughts are, “Where’s the bleach? I’ve got to do some cleaning. This is not cool!” The other thing I didn’t like with this yarn, from your demonstration, was the ease with which the yarn broke when you pulled on it. I would hate to put hours of work into a project only to have the yarn break easily when being worn. Just an accidental catch of the yarn on something could cause that yarn to break…IMO. Thank you, Crystal, for another great yarn update! Like you, I do like Lion Brand yarns but something unpleasant definitely happened with this particular kind.

Considering the fiber content of this yarn, I would have thought it would have a much stronger breakage point. I know as far as sewing thread, if it breaks that easily, that means it's old thread. I dont know if the same holds true for yarn, but if it smells musty and breaks that easy, I'd think it was stored in a warehouse for a year or two.. or three.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think that any roving yarn is going to have very high tensile strength. Typical yarn is plied and twisted to give it more strength. But roving yarns can be fun to work with because they are solid and don’t split.

Raw silk does have an odor. I tried on an item of clothing that smelled so bad I of course left without it. I didn't think that yarn was pretty anyway. Glad you reviewed it. Thanks for your always honest opinion.

Thank you so much for your reviews! They are so helpful! So, before watching this video & the last review, I saw the "3 packs" on joann's & already purchased them. (Still waiting for mine to be delivered.) If I don't get a 3 pack of each (like they advertise), I will be raising hell. They WILL honor that or I'll never order from them again. *I have issues when ordering online from them EVERY TIME! But, it sounds like I might be returning the silk one altogether because I don't think I'll be able to handle the smell you're describing! Lol! I didn't know that silk (or cheap silk) generally smells bad until I read some of these comments. I guess you learn something new every day. 😊 But thanks again for doing reviews! I don't know what I would do without you! You're the best! ❤

I really don't care for Lion brands yarns only because we had issues with them when my youngest son Skooter was teaching knitting in after school class at his high school IB program back 2012-2014. I used a bunches of home spun yarns and it didn't do so well. So i respun them on my home spinner. And I used it in several crochet projects afterwards and even donated it to some of other students in his class to make into some granny squares for afghans to be donated to local homeless shelters or families in need. Thanks again for doing all you do for us all.

There are to many great silk blend yarns that are reasonably priced to take a chance getting smelly yarn.Thanks for another great review.

When you said what you would rate it I said a 2 as well. Awwe to bad you received smelly yarn again. Thanks for keeping us informed Crystal we do appreciate all of your help and and knowledge about yarn. 🙂
