Dusting off the Volca’s after a few modular heavy months.
I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while but always thought of it as sort of cheating. But… I’m not actually sure there are any rules.
So why do I think it’s cheating. Well the notes from the Volca are coming from logic via MIDI. It’s an old arpeggio I was playing with that I’ve run through a probability gate. After about a minute, the probability of note being played drops by 5% every 8 bars until it gets quite sparse. All I wanted to do during the “jam” was play with the settings and not have to worry about silly things like melody and rhythm. After hitting a delay and reverb in the H9 it runs through a filter in Logic which has a lot of movement. It’s not quite cheating but I feel there’s a lot you can hear that isn’t on the table.
When it comes to the drum, it’s a simple pattern with probability settings of around 75% on each step. I’ve cheated here by splicing the recording and bringing the beats back in towards the end. This bit isn’t live. I fade to a pretty visual effect to hide my shame.
Finally I used a soft synth to add pads underneath everything. After the jam everything felt very thin when I came to mix it. I nearly tossed everything because how could I possibly add anything to the mix after playing it? I decided there are no rules and if they are, they’re stupid.
