Happy New Year from me and the girls and all the other guys that help out on these cars just for laughs... This time we're picking up a Nash Metropolitan for the lot here... She's a little tatty so she'll fit right in and we have just the spot put aside for her, right on the corner...
All the best this year from us here; lots of cars to fix up this year!
Cheers,
SSF

Ahhh, the good ol` `59 Nash Metr ! Not necessarily a required addition to the collection, but a quirky acquisition, for spite`s sake. I do believe it needs to be placed next to the Nash Ambassador Custom, though. BTW - for some reason, I was really diggin` Tom`s lil` JD Tractor.

I did not know that the Metropolitan had the safety oil fitted in the rear axle. The handling of this particular model was legendary but not in a good way , When the weather got cold the little woman would not be able to leave the house as the safety oil froze in the rear axle preventing any travel until the temperature rose and the roads were again safe for her driving skills. This was a secondary safety back up as the first was that the door locks froze so access to the vehicle was denied. Of course some objected to this so would not lock the doors, or they hoped someone might steal it. Seriously that looks a pretty good keeper with a few more bad storage years left in it before going beyond the point of not worth return... Happy New Year to you and all agents

A Metro, can't get much cooler than that. Obviously a future episode of it's own. That six volt start reminded me of a '50 Merc I had, a great car that always ran and only broke down once, when you would start it the battery always wore down right to the point where you thought it was going to die and then it would fire up. No matter the time of year or weather it would take it's time and push your patience to the breaking point. Great video, Bonne Annee to you and yours.

I wonder if it's a 1200 or a B-series 1500cc engine. The Metropolitan was the only car sold by a US manufacturer that was completely built in another country. I always wanted to drive or ride in one, but never had the chance. We saw very few of them in the Chicago area. I'm sure you will have fun with it. Happy New Year to you and all the agents of CWM, especially Stella.

You want folks to "Subscribe, even though it's a bad idea." It's a GREAT IDEA---you want to see real people put in the work on getting something used, abused, & then forgotten put back on the road. I'm more of a fan of this than that Texas jag-off w/his "Gas Monkey" Garage. But I digress...I appreciate the "Classic Tire" Segment - nothing like getting a good look at what passed for tire technology back in the day. I had a '68 Electra back in the '90's, & when I got her, she was riding on bias-ply tires. First thing I did was take her to Sears Auto (yes, they had an automotive dept., look it up) & bought a set of radials. Without changing anything else, the ride was like night & day, esp. on Chicago streets. I miss that land yacht.

That might well be the fastest that Metropolitan has ever moved. That bath tub body was very heavy and the 1500cc BMC B-series engine wasn't exactly a power house with a mighty 50hp so they were decidedly leisurely. However, it is a B-series so there's a lot that can be done with them, there is a guy here in the UK who races one in classic saloon car racing. If I remember rightly his was in way worse condition than this one looks when he started with it (it was a UK car...) Good luck with this one, a Happy New Year to you and the girls and I hope you're surviving the sub-arctic weather OK...
@4thstooge75
@4thstooge75 6 лет назад
I know these cars were built in the UK, But were they sold there? The Metro was not the worst car they put these engines in, That honor goes to the truly awful Austin/Morris Marina. A car that had a front suspension not strong enough to go in a golf cart.

Happy new year as well! The Nash door design brings back some memories: In the late Seventies we discovered a 1952 Nash Statesman in a garden that had been parked for many years. The owner was a sick old lady. The floorpanels were quite crusty and the car was extremely bathtub like, the hidden wheels were very special as well: I admired the door design and the apealing ugliness of the car. It was so different from eveything other car design I knew by then. This car was unique in Switerland. In fact I have never seen a second Statesman ever.Being a teen with limited car knowledge and no place to store it and no budget I could not buy the car. A few years later a neighbour called me, that the lady had passed away and if I still had interest in the car. Sometimes I still regrett that I did not get the car when I had the chance. Since then the late fourties and early fifties Nashs got my interest.

The driveline was all Austin A-40 Somerset with a late 1950s upgrade to 1500 with the Austin A-50 & A-55 1500 cc block. Transmission was 3-speed unlike the BMC 4-cylinder cars which had 4-speeds. Remainder of the driveline was Austin. The body design and unibody were designed in the US by Nash Motors and built to their specs by BMC subsidiary Pressed Steel Limited, which built all BMC's regular bodies. There were few basic changes from 1954 till the end of production with 1962 models. We saw very few Metropolitans here in the East, at all, even though Austins in particular were popular, along with Morris Minors.

I was 15 years old stopped on my bicycle at an intersection in Allentown Pa. when I saw my first Nash Metro that actually flew. Some dingaling in the Metro came hurtling down south 4rth street at about 80 MPH hit the curb right by the stop light the thing literally disintegrated mid air before it landed in a used car lot on top of 2 cars. I think the dude maybe had a heart attack at the wheel but if he wasn't dead before the crash he sure as hell was dead dead when I came over neither of the doors were even on the car nor windows. The car and driver were totally obliterated. First time I seen seen blood mixed with gasoline. Even the fuel tank ruptured open. The right front wheel actually rolled about a half mile down the road. I saw the next day on another trip I took.

Back in the 1980s when the Pate Swap Meet was still going strong SW of Fort Worth, I spotted a unique Metro which had been put together from two damaged Metros. 1/2 was from a Metro damaged in front and 1/2 was from a Metro convertible damaged in the rear. The unit that was damaged in front had the engine compartment entirely removed. The convertible had the rear trunk area removed behind the seats. The two were joined together and the front became the open driver's area while the rear section enclosed became the VIP limo section. It was a dual-cowl phaeton! I never found out what methods were used to connect the two together. Perhaps two steel box frame pieces were employed? It appeared for several years at the Pate Swap meets and disappeared, having been sold I believe. You never know what you are going to find at swap meets!

Well what is this car, a Nash or an Austin ? We (have) had these cars over here in the UK and I thought they were made by Austin (according to the badges etc.) People may have said they were a terrible car, but they are pretty bizarre so I give this um, Nash/Austin Metropolitan MY vote for that reason alone. Weird old cars RULE ! Happy New Year from Dorset.
