New York City Subway: IRT Lexington Avenue Line at 14th Street-Union Square

Today we take a look at the next express station along the IRT Lexington Avenue Line, which is 14th Street-Union Square.
This station lies below the Union Square Park and originally opened in 1904 as part of the first IRT subway line. It is an express station and is served by (4), (5) and (6) trains. The BMT Canarsie and Broadway Lines also have a station here, but they are not shown in this film.
We first take a look above ground at the beautiful neighborhood and park. We then move underground. The station has a few interesting aspects. It lies in a pretty tight curve and its downtown and uptown platforms are shifted significantly. Also because of the curve, the downtown platform is equipped with moving platforms that extend to the subway car in order to bridge the gap between the train and the platform edge. Finally, the station's mezzanine is located over the platform from which one can observe the platforms and trains.
If you are a fan of the station announcements at the IRT lines, you will enjoy this film, as there are a lot of them!
Enjoy!
Filmed on 8 March 2015.

I grew up in NYC.I started taking the subway alone since I was 12 years old whether it was to school or to my grandma's house (grandma lived in Queens and I lived in The Bronx) and taking the subway to grandmas house was a long subway ride. I had to take the 4 train from The Bronx all the way to 14th Street (this very station shown in this video) to transfer to the L train and finally at Wyckoff Ave, I would transfer to the M train to Queens to Fresh Pond Rd. I now live in Las Vegas, NV. I have been living here for 9 years now and one thing I miss the most about NYC is taking the subway to get to where I need to. For a while, living in Las Vegas, I was without a car and it killed me that in Las Vegas, their public transportation is extremely awful and outdated. I miss that whenever I wanted to go somewhere, I can just walk 3 min from my apartment and I'm already sliding ym metrocard to get into literally an underground city called the NYC subway. I like watching these videos because I can still hear the sounds I miss dearly of my previous life I had growing up in NYC. I hope you can come back one day and take more videos of the NYC subway. Perhaps you can visit some of the stops I have great memories of.

What a beautiful day. You can pick out all the buildings and know exactly where you were filming since there weren't any leaves on tbe trees. Gorgeous, tremendous. The city really did a nice job renovating Union Square Park as well as the surrounding roads. I remember when they started that around 2000.

A bit of trivia about the station: before they opened that passageway (the one with those freestanding sections of subway wall) just above the downtown local track, there used to be an open catwalk connecting the north and south ends of the downtown platform! Once they opened that passageway they removed that catwalk as it was no longer needed. Up until a few years ago when they redid the mezzanine floor a patch of concrete that replaced the north end of the catwalk was still visible.

Nice post on NYC transit forums and for the R188 it has the same AC unit has the R142A which is annotated on 9:30 to 9:40 and i knew this for a fact since I have R142A (R188 convert) 7311 on January 20th around 2pm and its ac unit didn't emit the same AC unit sound as the R142 and for the IND/BMT lines the R142 can be compared to the R160A & R160B alstom due to the fact they share the same propulsion unit, but the R142A & R188 should almost be identical the R143 & new R179 cars due to their MITRAC propulsion units

The IRT platforms are the only platforms of this station to not be wheelchair-accessible. This is because the sections of the platforms that are directly below the mezzanine are too narrow to fit elevators. However, the MTA could install ramps instead. 42nd St-PABT’s platforms are more than wide enough for elevators and yet, have no elevators but ramps. So if there’s no room for elevators but ramps going in a spiral or similar can fit, they should be built instead.

Many thanx for the videos. A question on the voltage. From what I have read the NY Subway is around 600Volts DC. In the videos you talk about the sound of AC control gear. Is the DC converted to AC for the traction motors or is the noise the DC chopper control gears starting the motors?? Vove you videos of the elevated lines..

I dont know if you have ever been to the Bay Area Near San Francisco, but they have a train system there called BART whicjh stands for Bay Area Rapid Transit, and I was just wondering If i may ask you, during the real commute times when everybody goes to work in the morning and when everybody gets off of work in the afternoon or evening, ours here actually added cars to the train to make them longer and add more seating for all of those people even though it never really matters anyway only because almost all of the seats will be usually taken and the other people willhave to stand and hold on to the overhead bars that the have that go the length of the cars, does the NYC Subway do the same thing as well, meaning do they add extra cars to the trains to make more available seating or whatever??????
@Organgrinder1010
@Organgrinder1010 8 лет назад
Since I don't see a reply, let me give you what little information I know. Train lengths used to change according to anticipated demand as on BART, and CTA in Chicago, but I believe the labor costs of coupling and de-coupling were greater than the cost of simply running full length trains most of the time, even when nearly empty. Many of the train sets are of two semi-permanently coupled groupings of five cars each. I don't believe they're taken apart except for servicing. You may notice the cars are in numerical order within these sub groups. Variations among the three original systems [BMT, IRT, IND] exist for multiple reasons, some to do with dimensions of running space and platform length. I hope someone else corrects any errors I have made.

Why are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 the only lines with announcements and countdown clocks? I know that newer technology was used on the L and the MTA is working on the other lettered lines, but why did 1-6 have it first? Does it have to do with the IRT?
@sonicboy678
@sonicboy678 7 лет назад
They still need to have the train positions read with certain signals and have them converted into approximate times. In addition, the trains themselves need to be represented by their routes rather than simply "express" or "local" in order to make any sense. ATS and ISIM are being used before CBTC, which takes these things into account while also allowing for improved operation that doesn't rely on block signals or humans.

The station dates to 1905 and was only big enough for five cars, so at Rector Street (last stop before South Ferry) they would hold the train a few minutes to allow passengers in the last five cars to move up to the front!

@TheLpbrennan
@TheLpbrennan 8 лет назад
The train can't move until the doors are closed. You'll often see people rushing up to a closing door and holding it. By having the gap fillers moved only by the closing train, this prevents someone rushing up to an open gap. At South Ferry there is a separate signal indicating when they have fully retracted so the motorman can accelerate.

Don't make that decision based on this video--Union Square is one of the worst stations in the system when it comes to noise, overcrowding, etc. because it sits on a tight curve and is a major transfer point between lines. It's not really a fair representation of what the NYC subway is like overall.

Почему так криво идут пути? и платформа. Да , наше метро красивее, но многолюднее.
