I don't think people understand the microeconomics (supply and demand) at work when prices skyrocket at times during disasters for items people want. Supply has been disrupted due to the disaster (supply is down) and everyone wants these items like hand sanitizer (demand is up). With less supply and more demand, market economics dictate that the price must be raised. It's somewhat automatic. The more drastic the change in supply and demand, the more drastic the price change. This is how it works for ANY product on the marketplace. Be it clothes, electronics, and so on. Of course this price difference is most obvious right now for products with drastically increased demand, such as hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Also, with the drastically increased price, this has the added benefit of people not hoarding the product in question (or at least, it reduces hoarding). If hand sanitizers were all at their regular price right now, for example, people would definitely hoard them. With hand sanitizers running you around $35 now, people are definitely less likely to hoarde them, so that more people can actually get the item in high demand. Make no mistake, I'm not trying to insult anyone here. I used to think this was price gouging as well. I just happened to take a microeconimcs course at University and it changed my mind. The professor didn't even mention price gouging, but when you understand a bit of market economics, you can see that it's not price gouging. There are definitely cases in which some organizations are in fact price gouging, and operating outside of market economics, but those are the exception, not the rule.
I would love to see more updates like this one. This is a really big event and people in the future are going to want to see what life in NYC looked like during the pandemic.
It’s been a weird time. I work in one of the WTC towers and each day the city just got emptier and emptier until we were told to work from home. Haven’t been back to the office since and don’t think anyone will be for awhile. Such odd times.

Not only that but it's an extremely dick move to sell it 30$ higher than usual. This kind of stuff (hand sanitizer, soap) should be given out free during a time like this, instead of making the most profit you can.
@@illuwe it cost that much because poeple keep buying a shit load of it and most handsantizers are made in China who of Wich we currently are not trading much with. Therefore supply goes down but damand increases a ton so price must be increased for supply to continue to be there. Or else poeple will keep hoarding and panic buying all the handsanitzer until there's no more and nobody can get any. However I agree $30 is a dick move.

I've been thinking that when your out only use 1 hand for doing stuff. Keep other in pocket. Then when you get home, you have a 'safe' hand to to touch your doorknobs, taps, etc...
In Australia, the panic buying is absolutely ridiculous. Our two big grocery supermarkets have had to introduce an hour for elderly and disabled at the start of the day to allow them to shop without the stampede of people. Toilet paper sells out in minutes, no meat, pasta, canned food.
Wow, the lack of activity is the opposite of my city, *everybody* is out and about. It’s been really nice lately (I’m in Washington) and with everything closed everyone’s just taking it as an opportunity to go do something in a group. It doesn’t seem as though closing everything is as effective as we (or at least I) thought it would be.
It was the same in my hometown Dresden, Germany. Nobody followed the recommendations to stay home and not meet in groups. Now the city is under lockdown.
Supermarkets in the uk have put prices Up! (Even if they say they haven’t) And offers taken off, the products have a normal sticker on now no offers. Obviously they can’t keep offers on, but prices have risen. Stay safe everyone 🙏

Who would think your life could change in just 11 days, not I. 😔 Now I’m confined to my bedroom, staying away from my husband and worried for my health as I got my positive results yesterday. I’m a flight attendant which is considered a high risk job but I could have gotten it anywhere! Please if anyone reads this stay inside! Keep yourself and others safe. I just feel bad for the waiters and those in a service industry. 2000+ laid off from the big restaurant group who owns Gramercy Tavern today. Businesses all over won’t last these next few weeks. This whole things is going to change the city for years. It may never be the same now, and imagine if viruses like this are a big part of our future. Stay safe everyone.

Go buy hand wash liquid soap, get one big liquid soap bottle at Costco. That’s what the doctor recommend everyone to do. Always make sure to wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
The local bodegas and corner stores who are price gouging at a time like this in communities that have sustained them...please report them. Remember how they reacted during a crisis when this is all over, they put greed before decency, they don't deserve your patronage. People are going out as usual, but70-80% of them are wearing masks. It's important to wash hands, so I do sometimes.

The numbers in Australia aren't accurate and it's causing a lack of concern. My friend who has not been overseas and isn't in a high risk age bracket but has all the symptoms cannot get tested. She has a record of poor immunity and is suffering. But this indicates a larger pattern. If it's hard to get a test, it's hard to know how many people are infected, and it's hard to rally people to act in the best interests of others.
I'm in Delaware and same with Jersey and PA, restaurants and bars are closed, take out and delivery only. Some stores are on limited hours or just closed...202, the main road going through my area has been busy. But with restaurants closed, it has gotten quiet later at night. Wonder what Marques' area is like since he's right over the river from you.
Someone with NYC viewers needs to call the MTA out on something. They are hiring more hazmat workers for cleaning the trains. Sounds good right? It's not... They are hiring them as gig workers through a company called High Wire Networks. The jobs went out through an app meant for IT workers, posted by HWN. They are hiring people with no experience off an app where there are no background checks, it could literally be anyone from across multiple states who comes in. They will do the OSHA 20 course, 20 hours over three days plus a couple hours testing for which they will only be paid 50 bucks a day. That comes out to 6.18 an hour. Actual pay will only be 6.13/hour because the app takes 10% from the workers. Then they will do 84 hours (or more) of cleaning per tech over 2 weeks. For this putting themselves in harms way they will only be paid $1095.00. Even if it ends up being more hours the total pay will not increase because it is flat rate. $13.03 an hour before that 10% gets sucked out. These techs have to provide their own transportation, lodging, food plus pay taxes, overhead etc out of this. $13/hour for MTA Hazmat work. Being gig workers these folks usually do not have health insurance if they end up catching it, which they are likely to do since they are inexperienced. I know damn well tax payers are going to be charged way more than that. He'll MTA might be paying way more than that but because they are using a middleman company like HWN, HWN will keep a large % of the pay amount to do nothing more than talk to the techs, if even that, when they check in and check out. They are taking advantage of people's desperation due to the current lack of work on these platforms and putting them and New Yorkers at risk.

You should be proud of the people in NYC, they understood what it takes to fight this virus, stay home. In my country people don't understand this, especially old people, they are everywhere, they say they experienced worse than this, they don't understand that as long as this virus is out our economy suffers, it is not just about our health.
A straight forward, honest upload, that everyone can appreciate. People should seize this as an opportunity to reconnect, or connect more with family and friends; at home, online, or over the phone. There can be strength in numbers, and there are so many ways to stay connected without physical contact, total isolation isn’t the answer, and isn’t healthy. Be cool, be smart, be safe. Well if I were you, I would be out there investigating stores selling hand sanitizers. That is illegal and the store would probably close forever as a result unless they have the paperwork showing that it was the supplier that raised the price.
Idk I live in brooklyn and Friday March 20th prospect park had lot of people and so was the traffic to get there down ocean parkway and prospect park expressway
