Their music always sounded as if it was about to fall apart at any second. Takes a lot of skill to play like that. They were brilliant.

To think the Dolls supported the Stooges in 1973! That must have been one hell of a concert. Great footage of a group that was mocked mercilessly in their short lifetime, but has cast a long shadow since then.

Can you imagine at the time people not liking this band? Yet, there they are. Playing instruments. Arranging melodies. Performing chord progressions. Keeping solid time. Presenting themselves. All the while looking at ease with their abilities and who they are. Too clever for the majority to see it.

Oh how I love them. It's hard to believe how many people hated them at the time. The big New York "progressive rock" station, WNEW-FM, would get angry phone calls whenever they played them, which was very little. I lost half my high school friends over the Dolls, and good riddance. They never recorded a bad song, and the third album would have been their best. They had the songs, always.

The definition of Hot Mess right here. For anyone who disputes that Punk was born in the US, the New York Dolls were the direct predecessors to, and inspiration for, the Sex Pistols, having been managed for a short time (pre-Sex) by Malcolm McLaren at the end of their run, before their spectacular implosion. McLaren took the essence of the NY Dolls and immediately set out to create their successor in the Sex Pistols, albeit louder, angrier, and even more self-destructive. The Pistols' run lasted about half that of the Dolls before their implosion at the height of their success. Without the NY Dolls, there would NEVER have been any Sex Pistols, and the UK Punk scene (which, I will concede, was by far the creative superior to the early US Punk scene, pre-Hardcore 76-79) would never have happened.

Sylvain is playing the white Les Paul that was given to Malcolm McLaren who, in turn, gave it to Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols who played it throughout his career

No,Sylvian had a white Falcon guitar like Billy Duffy of the Cult.Steve Jones had a custom white Les Paul but you`re right Steve Jones defo liked Sylvians guitar playing.

@@brianmorecombe2726 There's footage online of NYD playing in 1974 and Sylvain is playing the white LP with the pin up girl stickers that McLaren got, then Sylvain got the Falcon. Both great guitars

Yeah…. 1977 in 1973. Can’t imagine how this would have sounded to people in clubs in 1971 with Rod Stewart and Donny Osmond on the radio. These guys haphazardly changed the course of rock music “Clive Davis once told Lisa Robinson not to talk about New York Dolls uptown if she wanted to work in the music biz. They were petrified of the Dolls. They thought they were homosexual. It wasn't just homophobia; it was still illegal to be homosexual. People don't remember that it was the law. To say the Dolls, guys who wore makeup, were your friends was like saying you knew a criminal.” - Bob Gruen

Notice the subtle Ziggy Stardust Starman top of the pops reference when Johnny Thunders come in for the harmony and David drapes his arm over him akin to David Bowie and Mick Ronson.

Whoah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Well, we can't take it this week And her friends don't want another speech Hoping for a better day To hear what she's got to say All about that personality crisis, you got it while it was hot But now, frustration and heartache is what you got (That's why they talk about personality) (Personality) But now, your tryin' to be something, now, you got to do something Wanna be someone who counts But you think about the times you did, they took every ounce When it sure got to be a shame when you start to scream and shout You got to contradict all those times you butterflyin' about (You were butterflyin') About that personality crisis you got it while it was hot It's always hot you know it's frustration and heartache is what you got (I've gotta talk about personality) And you're a prima ballerina on a spring afternoon Change on into the wolfman howlin', at the moon, hooowww About that personality crisis, you got it while it was hot It's always hot you know it's frustration and heartache is what you got (That's why they always talk about personality) Now, with all the crossin' fingers that mother nature says Your mirrors getting jammed up with all your friends That personality, everything is starting to blend (?) Personality, when your mind starts to blend Got so much personality, impression of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend Personality, wonderin' how celebrities ever mend (Lookin' fine on television) Personality crisis, you got it while it was hot It's always hot you know it's frustration and heartache is all that you got Ohh, don't you worry Personality crisis, please don't cry It's just a personality crisis, please, don't stop Because you walk a personality Talk a personality
