These are the real issues. Idk if other hosts can connect like her. Or maybe its the writers but if you live in NYC this is waaaay too relatable!! I'm in Dallas now and so happy to have escaped that. Literally everyone has central air/heat :)

@@ArcaJ mine isn't bad about 50/60. I take that over freezing any day. And rent is already so expensive there then freezing on top of that just doesn't make it worth it. Rent is much more affordable in Dallas plus you get to control your heating. Lol such a win. The only thing I would say is in Dallas the real expense is owning a car but that's it🤷🏾‍♀️

That’s how it should be, but not necessarily how laws are actually written/ enforced. Property companies can afford more political donations than renters can.

Is that really how heat is controlled in certain living situations in NY? I've never had to rely on someone else for that out here in Cali...even when I lived in apartments. Crazy.

in older buildings that have a broiler or one big newer unit that replaced an old broiler. At least I think thats how that would happen. idk, I live in a house! lol

Yes. The owner/landlord controls the thermostat in most older buildings. In some instances they just don't turn it on until people complain.

@@izzie9888 Boiler* A broiler is something slightly different. That's like a grill, but the heat source is directly above the food.

Amber Ruffin got it spot on with this. I live in one of those apartments that is 95° in winter!🤣 NYC DOES have laws about this. If the temp is below 55° C the apartment has to be 68° C minimum between 6 am and 10 pm and 62° between 10 pm and 6am regardless of the temperature outside. If the landlord doesnt do this city residents can call 311 to report it. The city then sends out a code enforcement inspector who will take the ambient temp in the coldest room and the hot water temp. If they are under the required temp, the inspector will leave a literal violation ticket with a fine attatched in the building in public view. Heat season for the agency that does this is October 1 to May 1. I know this because I am an auditor for the code enforcement inspectors. Unfortunately in the worst scenarios for scoff laws and serial offenders the same agency (HPD) has a legal Dept that can go to court if landlords dont resolve the issue. Withholding rent is an option but its better only to do this with court permission. The inspectors also review and can fine a whole host of repair issues . Welp, thats my diatribe. Oh no. I'm so sorry you have to do that; it's dangerous; but so is being cold. If you can a sleeping bag can help at night when your not up to watch the stove or a space heater. I've put curtains up between my doorways so that my space heater works more efficiently. Hope your landlord comes through.

In large apartment buildings there is a central control switching over from AC to heat. It is also bad in the OTHER way, when they haven't switched over to AC and you are wrapping a wet dishtowel around your neck to try to cool down. It is a problem only in cities, and not a problem rich people have.

It entirely depends on the HVAC system in the building. I was always in control of the switch in the apartments I lived in. America is not homogenous.

Some boiler or heating systems in New York have a timer or a digital switch that can be controlled remotely by landlords or their management agents. I have seen this problem in old buildings and newly constructed ones. There are city codes against withholding heat

So much so that there are laws in Massachusetts stating that the landlord HAS to turn on the heat. And regulating the minimum temperature they have to have it set at. It still doesn't mean the landlords are going to obey the law though. And there's always the concern you'll be labeled a "problem tenant" if you complain. One apartment I lived in was particularly bad. When the heat was on, it was on full blast. To the point where I had my windows open *during a blizzard* and it was still 85F inside. That was also the building that burned down. (Not due to heating issues.)

it's typically the case in older apartment buildings where there isn't a gas or electrical meter for each individual unit. there's one central boiler with the control for it in the landlord's unit. in newer apartment buildings each unit typically has its own thermostat / heating system and separate billing which the renter is then responsible for paying. (the latter is also usually the case if a building was originally a house that was converted to apartments.) though i did once live in an older building that had individual thermostats and separate bills... so you can't really say for sure what it'll be. but my takeaway from this song is that in NYC (which has mostly older buildings) it's often centralized.

There are a lot of buildings that have radiator heat only which uses a central boiler and pipes to distribute the heat to each individual unit so if they don't turn on the boiler nobody gets any heat. And then once the heat is on it's just on so the only way to regulate temps is to open windows or ask that they change the boiler temp but then you could have Tennant's complain it's too cold so they probably default to too warm.

NY has alot of old buildings. Heat is controlled by the owner/Landlord (to control heating fuel costs) Many owners set the thermostat very low so that it won't kick in until it's REALLY cold

Heating systems in many New York buildings have a timer or a digital system that the owners or management can control remotely. It can be set to turn on the system automatically when the outside temp goes down . New York does have laws about minimum temperatures during winter , but many landlords wont follow them unless they are fined. Worse if a boiler is old and stops working.
