This was tried in the newest office building where I retired from. The two story "social areas" were freezing in the Winter and sweltering in Summer. There were constant bird strikes and bird bodies outside on the green areas. It was a big headache for maintenance. It became a place to avoid...not congregate.

@@franciscodanconia4324 Well remember, plants lose their leaves in the winter and grow them back once the blossoming season hits. Even if the plants (and roots) do end up freezing, just remember they already have nutrients stored inside them, and will use them after the winter.

So I’m one of the project managers who built this building and I know it better than just about anyone. On the higher floors there are provisions for 10 foot high glass screens at the terraces to stop the wind. Some tenants are electing to install the glass to stop the wind on the higher floors.

@@jont2576 you'd be surprised. I've been on large projects like this in the past. Some clients even have a budget for reconfiguring stuff like this after claiming that it 'didn't work', or 'caused unforseen complications'. I hope it does, but time will tell.

People forget how hard taking care of plants really is when they are not in actual ground. Drainage, watering, feeding, trimming, maintenance the list goes on

ground is bringed up when its builded and stays in there so not that much needed. Drainage, watering is possible by automation with moisture sensors and valves, trimming is i guess like in normal places. Hire a guy or make them keep it clean whoever rents the office area, maintenance and problems can't really say much, but 100% possible and looks good.

Clearly no introverts were consulted (or listened to) in designing it. I also doubt it'll end up looking like those renderings. There's way too much wasted space for most company's tastes. They'll make it a lot less open. And noisier.

@@ViolentSillyGirl Well actually that's happening. You can't build a 300 meter skyscraper in wood, but a 10-storey building is doable, and it's a hell of a lot more sustainable than a steel and concrete building which has a few trees on the roof.

Cities keep expanding upwards but nobody thinks about improving the ground level (street transport, sidewalks, etc). So we end up with overcrowded streets and sidewalks and many frustrated drivers/pedestrians. In my view, upward expansion should come with a corresponding improvement on the ground level. Otherwise, the ground level is a huge, stressful bottleneck.

NYC unknown to most has changed its laws to protect the scum elite that live there. Real estate is now used for laundering money and tax havens. That's why you see so many building for rent yet no one can afford to rent them for the cost per sq ft is so high. That's because the owner is using it for a tax haven.

And time. I used to have to travel an hour on a smelly packed underground train to work and an hour back. That's 2 hours of a day gone just travelling. And that's when the trains worked. Which they often didn't, or there would often be train strikes. Or football matches which made it even more packed. And commuting wasn't cheap either. Compare that to saving money and 2 extra hours in my day. What the possible hell kind of motivation would ever make me want to go back to the office?

Honestly hate large open offices, so much interruption, and distractions when I'm trying to work. The office has become a meeting place and a training area more then anything now. It's hard to see a need for large offices like this when most seem to prefer working remotely.

Once or twice thru NYC in rush hour is enough for me - never again is my resolution - and the skyline is not 'beautiful' it's just a skyline of concrete & glass with heat & confusion below. Making one building with a few plants doesn't change that reality. I live way out where trees rule !

It's even better to work from home, in the suburbs with an actually community and surrounded by green. Or going to a natural resort for 10 days and work from there, and go walking with your kids after the workday, or go to Costa Rica and work from "Monte verde" surrounded by the sounds of nature for 15 days and have a nice Gallo pinto in the morning, or travel from Spain to Portugal and work down there and then go to one of the many bookstore buy a book and have a nice Galão and some sweets. The whole come back to the office you lazy b*td is the talk of the people that dream about power and control, and live from the surplus value of other peoples work: Politicians, High level executives. etc. Humanity has achieved so much, maybe is time to stop obsessing about maximum efficiency and productivity and have time for living? I believe it was the objective of all of this from the beginning (for most people). Even for people like me, that are enticed by the city, and work extra just for the fun of it (I work in software engineering). like working from home and the extra time it brings. Corporations that invest in that monster will be forced to justify the price by forcing employees to go to the office and be less productive and more tired.

Why can't I stay home in my pajamas all day? I'm not in my PJ's but I'm getting work done. I was at the Edge this past Sunday and they had blossoming Japanese Cherry trees in an alcove at the observatory - there was a line of people wanting to take pictures. It does add to it.

I don't think they're greenwashing. The plants aren't intended to scrub carbon (this claim has not been made by the architects), the building will be LEED certified so it will be more efficient than other buildings, but I think the main intention for the plants and the outdoor space is to provide a different and more freeing environment for the occupants.

This skyscraper still has major a problem which concerns every glass buildings because they act as a greenhouse during summer: lots of energy is required to power AC to cool down the whole building, and in winter: since glass is a very bad heat isolator the building will need to be fitted with energy thirsty heat pumps to keep the people inside warm. Anyways, this is to say that maintaining a stable temperature inside a glass building (sure, this one has a few trees every 10 meters, but this will barely have any positive effects on the office's temperature) meaning millions of dollars will be spent on heating and cooling the building, therefore still not a "green skyscraper".

I’d say it’s a B for architecture. It’s not really architecturally bad, it’s just mid. However since it’s so well marketed and “overhyped,” I understand why you would think it’s a D+ since it really doesn’t deserve the recognition it’s receiving.

The architecture of a building has nothing to do with why people don't want to work in an office anymore... cost of living and work/life balance are the main drivers for people wanting to maintain wfh. Adding green spaces to an office environment isn't going to entice people back into the office.

I had "a nice time" during my commute while i was in working in Manhattan. I took the train everyday from Downtown Brooklyn. Then again my standards for commutes are very low usually, I have to drive every day 50mts-2hrs hours from my urbanization(PRican suburb) to San Juan 😰 but i can fully empathize w/ New Yorkes who've had to go thru what I did a lot more times than I have. Must be very tiring. Even with better transportation

If corporate wants everyone to return to the office, it's really simple. Lease a company car for me and give me a gas card, or provide a company shuttle to pick me up, and then pay thousands more per month to cover childcare. Or... corporate can save a bunch of money on leased office and parking space, utilities, etc., and give me a laptop and a phone to work from home. I don't understand why corporate hasn't embraced WFH culture with open arms and fuller wallets.

Serious Question, because I don't get it: Would an office, that looks slightly different make you go back into a glass box? From my point of view, a glass box is a glass box. It doesn't get rid of commute, lack of parking space, office noise, toxic and/or apathetic bosses. "A nice view gets old quickly" as they say. I don't mind working in a basement, if the rest is all right.

This is the definition of *green washing* . What's so green and special in a building which will have 1 tree per floor? How will it feel to walk on a concrete terrace 300 meters in the air where the winds are dangerous, not to mention what would happen if a depressed worker tried to take the shortcut to the ground via the terrace... Kinda disappointed where BIG is heading with this project...

Specially with the floor-to-ceiling windows on all the outside walls, meaning a LOT of heat leaking out and massive heating bills. Lets also not forget that with the winter temperatures and wind speeds the trees won't survive their first winter and will have to be replaced every year.

I see this building every day and have seen in constructed that last couple years.. I’ve been waiting for this “spiral” to take shape and it really hasn’t. From afar the building just looks like a regular glass tower, with subtle cantilevered steps. This sky scraper is mid at best.

Even if they succeed how do you prune the trees that grow over the edge. Sure you can tie off branches with rope but the dead ones tend to shatter when they are cut

I live in a 73 story high rise, my unit has a large private terrace (larger than those on this building) along with 6 maple trees. Just like this high rise pictured, except much bigger. They are going to have a hell of a time finding the right tree for that amount of space. I don't think a tree that can survive NYC winters with that small amount of dirt/space/root structure, while simultaneously having the capability of being trimmed. Eventually, all trees grow. And we've had multiple arborists out including arborists from the Morton Arboretum and we still don't definitively know if continually trimming the trees will end up killing them. If the trees die, how do you get a large enough replacement up that high? You could grow one from a small size, but that takes an incredible amount of time. Is there a crane you can use to haul trees up there? These are all questions we are pondering where I live. Also, the flies. Oh god the flies. I hope the architects built in bug zappers somewhere that come on nightly. Trust me if they do not have active insect management methods in place, no one will want to go out there because each floor will have a million flies/gnats on it.

@@PhantomFilmAustralia if they do it right no, but I think they are under estimating what it requires to do landscaping like this. My building put effort into giving our trees good root structure as well as selecting a custom bred dwarf maple tree made specifically for this purpose. We’ve been able to keep our trees alive and growing since 2009. But again, there are still questions about how long they will live in this scenario. If we can keep trimming them, supposedly the arborists say they will last a long while. But I don’t see that level of thought going into this design. It looks too small, way too small.

Hybrid working is the future, no need for these massive office workspaces, employees only needed in the office 1-2 times a week at most

It's a lovely design, and I like BIG, but I don't know how you can reasonably call that building environmentally friendly, especially if it's going to (likely) sit partially or mostly empty for a long time. It's made from massive amounts of steel, glass, and concrete, which are all shit for the environment. And of course, this is exclusively for the rich, and does nothing to improve quality of life for the average new Yorker. It's a cool building, but let's not pretend it's some new paradigm of green architecture. It's more akin to the same old pig in green lipstick, probably

Great news about the vertical garden, I had heard greenery like this was unsustainable or impractical, which to me just sounded like an engineering problem yet to be solved, but it sounds like they are figuring out ways to do it. Thank you. Some interesting History and details of the building.. I leased a room at Four Points across the street during construction and it was fascinating to watch the process, including the technique of hanging each window panel, the very extensive, complex engineering of the horizontal spaces of the spiral, rain water capturing etc... and the steady elevating via cranes all day long of steel beams... Really amazing!... another factor as was discussed regarding the wind:...as the tower elevation grew and window panels were installed, the wind increased week by week....all seasons... by significant amounts, especially as the neighboring project on the north west corner of 35th and tenth began rising.. wind tunnels channeling the Hudson River winds!... But they are really beautiful in opinion. Thanks again.

When I see trees mounted on the sides of buildings I always wonder if the roots will have enough room to grow or if they might cause damage to the building in the future. Up to 80% of a tree is roots so there are more roots than branches showing above the ground. If the roots aren't happy you won't have strong and healthy plants. Which I imagine could even be dangerous at these heights, like weak branches or even a whole tree breaking in strong winds. 7:23 From what can be seen on the step balconies so far there doesn't seem to be any planters/structures that would support large trees as shown in the renders 3:49.

Nothing special about this tower. This sort of thing had been done on a smaller scale in smaller cities in Asia, and Australia before. The token greenery thing does not work.
