The New York Telephone Company (NYTel) was organized in 1896, taking over the New York City operations of the American Bell Telephone Company. Its purpose was to rent telephone instruments to users, who were expected to provide wires to connect them, for example from factory to office.
During the monopoly days of AT&T, phones were available to purchase for exorbitant prices. With the introduction of newer, smaller, and portable phones starting in the 1950s and into the 1960s, the prices came down and NYTel decided the time was right to create a campaign for phone purchases.
They hired Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BBDO), the legendary Madison Ave. ad agency (think "Mad Men"), for this purpose. This promotional album sent to radio stations was made to announce how you could purchase a phone for Christmas, 1965.
It's about as subtle as a brick. Get a phone so mom can take "less steps in the kitchen". Really?
