As an Aussie tourist, our first ever time travelling overseas was to visit our friend in Ohio in 1989. We landed in San Francisco (7 days before the quake) and trained our way on a sleeper for 3 days to Chicago. Best trip ever. We travelled for 6 weeks within the USA on an Amtrak Pass. Chicago to Mansfield, Ohio. Our friend drove from Colombus to pick us up in Mansfield. We had 8 days in Columbus and then flew to Cleveland and caught the train to Buffalo. Niagara Falls to New York. New York to Washington. Washington to New Orleans. Had to fly from New Orleans to Las Vegas. Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Flew from LA to Hawaii and then home. If time permits, train is my first choice. We were able to see so much and met so many people.

I think all Australians should be banned from travelling as punishment for how despicably rude and unprofessional their customs department are. If it’s internationally impossible to put a ban in place we should at least give the genocide perpetrators a piece of their own medicine. I got off at Grand Junction Colorado, so that might have been about 800 bucks for 1st class zephyr tickets... but it depends on when you go and how far you go so maybe 1 grand first class for the outbound trip from Chicago to California. The return trip is much much cheaper even in a roomette. That one was only like 400 or something.

You were so lucky, you saw 3 of Amtraks rare heritage locomotives! In Albany the locomotive leading your train was 100, the Midnight Blue 50th Anniversary locomotive, then the locomotive on your California Zephyr was 184, the 40th Anniversary Phase 4 locomotive, and in Denver you passed 130, the 40th Anniversary Phase 2 locomotive. That is so rare

Thank goodness you concentrated on scenery instead of detailed look at every inch of the sleeping accommodations. I've done this trip out and back twice, love it. Also ridden many other routes. The true Amtrak dining car is exceptional; the "flexible" maybe a step above airline. Amtrak will be truly recovered when all over night routes have real dining cars, even in the east!
@jackjules7552
@jackjules7552 9 месяцев назад
Amtrak will NEVER recover what it butchered. Amtrak butchered the national passenger rail system when it assumed the operation of all passenger rail service in 1971. In 1971, Amtrak eliminated about 60 percent of the routes, schedules, trains and all connecting trains. The MIdwest suffered the most from the cut with the complete elimination of North/South trains. Before Amtrak there was a train almost every hour between Chicago and New York, both express and local. Amtrak reduced that to one daily train between NYC and Chicago. And there were several rail lines to choose from if you were travelling from Chicago to San Francisco with different departure times. So if you missed one train another would be leaving soon on another rail line and route. There were also "thru sleepers and coaches" that could be hooked onto a connecting train upon arrival. Amtrak has eliminated all "thru sleepers and coaches."

If you're thinking about taking a trip like this, in particular the Chicago - Emeryville portion, I have two words of advice: do it! You won't regret it. I did Chicago to Emeryville in early March, and by happenstance, did it around the time of a full moon. Snow was on the ground from Iowa through the Rockies, and in the Sierras. It was a fantastic trip. Due to the full moon, I could watch out the window during nighttime and see an amazing snow-scape in the Iowa hills and the next night a gorgeous evening rock-scape in Utah. The food was great; and somehow tastes even better on the train. I've driven across the US, and while a road trip offers some interesting sights, the train gives you views that you'll never see from an Interstate, or even from a secondary road. I was in one of the rooms with bathroom and shower - very comfortable way to travel - but a roomette is almost as good and the view is the same. You could do a shorter trip, like Denver to Emeryville, just one night - this gets you the best of it. Or do Reno to Emeryville for a beautiful ride though the Sierras; that's not even overnight. One thing this excellent video didn't quite capture fully was the excitement when the train exits the Moffat tunnel after Denver, CO on the way to Winter Park, CO. You come out and all of a sudden you see snow covered mountains, and skiers sliding down them towards you. People let out a cheer in the viewing car when we exited the tunnel. It was truly something to see. I haven't done it, but the northern route to Seattle / Portland through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington State / Oregon or the southern route to LA that swings down through the southwest including New Mexico and Arizona are also supposed to be excellent.

Yes, “communal” dining is back. I took the Zephyr and Southwest Chief in Sept/Oct and as always found that to be one of the best parts of train travel in the US. Unfortunately the dining car is still not available for coach passengers, like everyone else Amtrak is having trouble getting staffing back up to pre-pandemic levels. Dining was from the traditional menu, but those traveling from the Eastern US said they were still doing “flexible” dining.

Thank you for posting this. I live very near the Emeryville station in California, so I walk by there all the time going to IKEA for meatballs, and wave to the train passengers. I've taken the Eurostar from London to Paris, but I've never taken one of our own trains right here in the US. Thank you for the inspiration! Glad you had a safe journey~

Wonderful pictures. I've done this a couple of times. Dining with other travelers made for a wonderful building of community through the journey. I'm glad those restrictions have been released (I hope) because it made the traveling so much more fun and interesting. But it's always an adventure!

I was a BNSF Engineer on a coal train out of Denver that uses the same track as Amtrak, a single main track. One night, the Eastbound Amtrak Zepher had a problem with their lead engine. Between the Amtrak Engineer and the Dispatcher, an attempt was made to set their lead engine on a siding. I don’t know much about Amtrak engines, but with their lead unit dead, it took several hours to restore the second unit and move the train. One BIG problem was that the second unit was facing the wrong way! However, they managed to set out their lead unit, but, for whatever reason, they had lost control of their second unit again. The siding was plenty long enough to handle their entire train, but they managed to stall it with four cars still on the main track. By this time, I was in a siding waiting for Amtrak, and it had been around five hours. Lots of drama and colorful lingo was being exchanged on the radio between Dispatch and Amtrak. Then Dispatch directs Amtrak to disembark their passengers and load them up in busses to continue to Chicago. After nearly twelve hours, BNSF sent two locomotives to hook onto the rear of the Amtrak train, shove it forward and hook up their defective lead unit then haul the Amtrak train back to Denver, about fifty miles. I was relieved about four hours later by another crew, sixteen hours on that train for me, and had only gone about seventy-five miles.

I have a cross country trip coming up in Feb/March New York/LA/Portland/Vancouver BC. Taking in The Cardinal/South West Chief /Coast Starlight and The Cascades.

I've traveled across the country on Amtrak in coach a couple times and for me is actually quite comfortable. If you travel in the off peak season (like you did), there will most likely be an empty seat next to you. The seats are huge and very comfortable. A huge drawback is the (lack of) food. As a coach passenger, you only have access to the Cafe car where they serve hot dogs, pizza, burgers, other microwaved food and a nice drink selection. Having this kind of food for 2-3 days can be difficult. And no refrigerator means you are kind of stuck with it. Nice picture of the train in Reno, NV from the thumbnail... I live there!

Thankfully, they've recently added some new slightly less artery-clogging foods to the cafe menu, like cold sandwiches and wraps
@emjayay
@emjayay Год назад
And they are all very mediocre versions of those food items. Nice sandwiches like those available at any train station and even U or S Bahn platforms in Austria, Germany etc. would be way better. And they could certainly buy better versions of what they do sell (I did this trip in Jan 2022). Some Amtrak employees both on trains and in stations are horrible too. It's weird how many seriously bad experiences I had with both on just one trip. Never once anywhere in Europe and I've been all over it by train.
@sgt.eclair
@sgt.eclair Год назад
@@emjayay I'd just like to add that your experiences are hardly universal. I've been exceptionally lucky and over my occasional Amtrak trips throughout the years, I've never truly had a bad experience, and around 90% of employees I've encountered have been either excellent, average, or just very tired/stressed. The average passenger's experience likely falls between the extremes of ours.

I did both the Zephyr and the Chief from Chicago to the west coast pre Covid (and the Starlight down the coast). Coach had access to the dining car back then but I decided I didn't need to eat three full meals while being almost completely sedentary for three days, so I chose to eat only one meal a day in the dining car, either breakfast or lunch. I carried fruit and other healthy snacks with me in a backpack, which combined with a sandwich from the snack bar or the station during one of the longer servicing stops (Denver on the Zephyr or Albuquerque on the Chief), it was plenty for me. If I make the trip again and they still don't have dining car access for coach, I'd plan accordingly and pack enough to see me through it.

I have been to several Amtrak stations, and my favorite is Baltimore’s. It’s small, quaint, lovely, green ceramic tiled, antique, understated station. It was also NOT crowded. You can practically see the 1920s or earlier in that station. ❤

Then again, I'm more about the trip than the destination. Hope you have good travels in your future, looking forward to seeing them.
