I miss the Coliseum and Oakland in general during this time period (1999-2004), this may have been another heart breaking A's loss but it still brings back fantastic memories. Thank you.

Yankees never celebrated an ALDS victory like they did here, but they truly celebrated here because it was a sense that they survived and aside from the loss in 97, this was the toughest ALDS they ever played up to that point. The others they breezed past Texas.

As an A's fan, this one didn't hurt...that 2000 team was a joy and the expectations were nil because we hadn't sniffed the playoffs since last being there in 1992. Plus, the Raiders had beaten the 49ers in a great Battle of the Bay earlier in the day...so I was already emotionally drained.

Couldn't believe how empty the stadium was for this game - you have a winner-take-all Game 5 at home against the 2x defending champs at 5:30 on a Sunday evening - and your team is coming off an 11-1 win in New York to force it. You'd think the fans would be chomping at the bit but not only was it not sold out, there were 20,000 empty seats. It had to have been a bit demoralizing for the players.

1996 to 2003 Yankees just toyed with most opponents. And there NEVER was any champagne for these A's. Some teams just can't get over the hump.

@@edwardmerriam6970 Actually, before the A's beat the White Sox in Game 3 of the 2020 AL Wild Card series, you have to go back to Game 7 of the 1973 World Series against the New York Mets for the Oakland A's last win in a winner-take-all postseason game.

All Yankee uploads from this time period are much appreciated as I loved the '96-'01 teams. Do you have game 1 of the 2001 ALDS between the Yankees and A's in original broadcast form or any form that shows the score and radar gun? I ask because I'd like to confirm if Clemens hit 100 mph in that game because I remember he typically topped out at 96-97 mph during his superbly consistent 2001 Cy Young year, though I remember being shocked a few years later in 2003 when Roger was going for his 300th win at Wrigley and somehow hit 96 and then 99 mph vs Sammy Sosa and it was interesting to be able to confirm this with the game on RU-vid 16 years later since Roger was typically "only" throwing up to 94-95 mph by 2003 as opposed to 2000 when he still was maxing out in the 96-99 mph range depending on the game. Similarly, I watched Game 1 of the 2000 World Series again a few years ago and was surprised Pettitte hit 95 mph that game. Pettitte got a fair amount of press at the time for increasing his velocity from 89-91 mph in the late 90s to 94 mph in the early 2000s with much of that attributed to Pettitte's workouts with Clemens, but I remembered Pettitte hitting 94 mph most often after his return from the elbow injury in '02 and '03 as opposed to 2000 when I remember him maxing out around 92-93 mph more often such as in this game so if anything, I would have thought '03, '02 or '01 for that matter to be more likely years for Pettitte to hit 95 mph than 2000, though I hadn't remembered Pettitte throwing harder than 94 mph before I re-watched the game for the first time since it happened live in 2000. Also, seeing peak Jason Giambi homer at Yankee Stadium the year before it became his home park was kind of cool as is seeing Johnny Damon playing with the A's against the Yankees in the playoffs knowing he'd go on to have memorable years playing for and against the Yankees beginning with the next season.

@@josecarranza7555 Pointless comment; it's widely known that Clemens probably did a 4-7 week steroid cycle once in each of the '98, '00 and '01 seasons, which is actually quite moderate. Which makes sense since Roger's trainer said Roger was did his cycle those seasons for stamina down the stretch. His body and pitching style really did not change. Also, while it appears his performance benefited from steroids in '98 and 2000, his performance did not appear to benefit from steroids in 2001. According to McNamee, Roger waited until August to begin his steroid cycle that year, yet before August, Roger was already 15-1 and leading the league in strikeouts. For those final 2 months on steroids, his ERA was a virtually negligible 0.20 lower than his ERA for the first 4 months clean and his strikeout rate actually declined a bit those last 2 months on roids, more likely because he and the Yankees had their playoff spot secure, but nonetheless, the point remains that at least in 2001, Roger's Cy Young was not a product of roids. It's also worth noting that Roger's best overall season was 1997 -- the year BEFORE he met Brian McNamee and began using roids. The difference is, Roger came down to earth somewhat the final 2 months of '97, which may be why he decided to experiment with roids in the 2nd week of June and he did get stronger as the '98 season wore on. His K/9 wound up increasing, and as opposed to Roger's 96-97 mph fastball in '97(I think he might have topped out at 98), Clemens was hitting 99 mph in 1998 and iirc, even hit 100 mph a few times.

@@josecarranza7555 Nobody has said Pettitte used steroids, but again pointless comment because everyone knows Pettitte used HGH after elbow injuries in 2002 and 2004; again, when there were no penalties for use. He did pitch superbly in 2002 after missing 2 months and had a strong, healthy '03 with a career-high for strikeouts finishing 6th in the AL in total strikeouts and K/9, tied a career-high for wins and was dominant in 5 postseason starts. As I said, that was probably the hardest he threw hitting 94 mph consistently, but I'm not sure that can be attributed to recovering with HGH the previous year because Pettitte regularly threw 93-94 mph a year before taking HGH in 2001 and Pettitte himself said the 95 mph he hit in the 2000 World Series was probably the hardest he ever threw. He came back with one of his best seasons in 2005, but his velocity was noticeably down usually topping out around 88-90 mph, though he did still have the capability to hit 93 mph on his best day. Btw, it's worth pointing out that the 2001 Yankees were statistically the worst defense and Posada led the league in passed balls, which is particularly relevant to Clemens, who threw many hard splitters low and out of the zone.
@mattray9904

@Robert Johnson True, with Clemens in a Cy Young year plus top form for the ALCS and World Series culminating in an excellent duel with Schilling in Game 7, plus, the addition of Mussina to go along with Pettitte in prime form and a big game pitcher like El Duque as the number 4, the Yankees had their best rotation of those great '96-'01 teams and the best rotation in the AL, despite the worst defense statistically. It's still difficult to swallow that loss after the pitchers duel and Soriano's huge home run to get the ball to Mo with a lead after the huge home runs by Tino, Jeter and Brosius earlier in the series, particularly with that inexplicable throwing error on the force at second. Soriano's rookie year included some really clutch moments in the postseason, particularly for a rookie. Knoblauch had become fairly useless outside of speed and baserunning since that bizarre mental block had relegated him to left field and DH, but O'Neill and Brosius retiring and Tino leaving for St. Louis was definitely a turning point. After that, they began trying to replace everyone with an expensive free agent or blockbuster trade as opposed to the more balanced teams of the '96-'01 dynasty years built around starting pitching, the most consistent closer and well-balanced lineups that didn't need the 40+ home run MVP-type sluggers. That '01 Yankee team actually spent less than the Dodgers as well and had a virtually identical payroll to Boston. Of course, they always had the resources, but spending is no substitute for building a team.

As a follow up to my question about Game 1 of the 2001 ALDS between these same teams(in original broadcast format with radar gun readings and score shown), I'd certainly pay for a copy if one were to surface on Ebay. I wish MLB would offer this sort of stuff for sale, especially if they're going to remove some of the games from RU-vid.
