Me being from New York reacting to Dave for the first time. Today on UK Monday’s were listening to Dave - Hangman and Dave - Black live at the Britt awards 2020 #UkMondays
Just to let you know, Jack Merritt (the guy mention near the end of the song) worked hard in expanding the programmes for the rehabilitation of convicted criminals, primarily black prisoners, to help them start a better life once they’re released. A terrorist attack happened in London last year and it involved a young man, who was an ex-convict, running round wielding a knife as a weapon. Jack Merritt was stabbed to death by the terrorist. That’s why Dave was honouring him. He worked to help members of marginalised communities in British prisons and ironically ended up being murdered by an ex-convict who was from an ethnic minority group. It’s also important to pick out because Dave is a very respectable and fair artist. He’s never been violent, discriminatory or anti-white or anything like that in his music or his behaviour. He’s very talented for his age and has used his platform to speak mature and justified truths to try and better our society and greatly contribute to our musical legacy.
To add on, he mentions Windrush and Grenfell. Windrush was regarding a ship of Caribbean immigrants brought to the UK post WW2, offered to come to the UK to help with labour etc. Legal migrants who came in to help out the UK, paid taxes, National Insurance and everything else citizens would do. They then faced deportation wrongly. Elderly people were barred from public services, lost welfare benefits among other thing (some actually being deported). Theresa May (former PM) was Home Secretary at the time, unsurprisingly. Amber Rudd, the next Home Sec resigned over the scandal. Rudd lied about people being targeted for deportation. an independent review found people were wrongly stripped of rights. Grenfell is a long one. So I'll condense it massively. 72 people died in a very poorly maintained tower block fire. The London Fire brigade had systematic failures and training that enabled more people losing their lives (for example, operators telling people on 999 calls to remain in their home up to 2 hours after the fire broke out). There's an ongoing inquiry into this, so not everythign is known but the design of the building is being looked at as it seems to not be up to standard. Still no justice for the people that have died.
@@cpmc5400 Just to clarify something, the LFB hadn't had systematic failures. The advice given (stay where they were) was 100% correct to the best of their knowledge, however, the owners of the Grenfell Tower had put cladding on the outside of the building in order to improve how it looked from the outside. This cladding wasn't flame retardant, and due to how it had been attached to the building, it acted as a funnel that allowed what should have been a small, self contained fire, to spread at an intense speed up the outside of the building. If the cladding was the correct cladding as it should have been, then it wouldn't have spread at that speed and ferocity. I think it's fair that we don't blame the LFB for what happened with Grenfell. Those guys worked incredibly hard to try to put out the fire and save as many lives as possible, but were up against it from the start due to the criminal negligence of the owners of that building. I personally know two firefighters who were drafted in from neighbouring fire services to support and they're traumatised by it to this day, as are a lot of the fire fighters who attended the fire
"UK African American activists" They can't be African American if it's in the UK 😂 In the UK we don't call black people African British We call them British because calling them African first is implying they're immigrants when they're not
That’s a fact bro, I noticed I missed a couple bars cause of that while I was editing. Also thank you for pointing that out because I’m striving to improve everyday and constructive criticism only helps me do that
Mate, if you jump down that uk rabbit hole you are in for a big surprise, its absolute fire. Lyrically outrageous, wordplay 1000, crazy flows, trust. Wretch 32 and Avelino fire in the booth, Akala fire in the booth 1 and 4, wretch 32 turns 32 daily duppy and Swiss daily duppy. Your welcome mate, good luck
Check out Rapman or Cadet. Both storytelling rappers from the UK its hard bro. Sadly Cadet passed away last year.. Cadet - behind barz. On of the hardest tracks!
This is true but we (UK) Caribbean shared a similar experience. The slave ships just took different directions you to the Americas and Cotton plantations us to the West Indies and Sugarcane.
I Can't lie..... I got quite emotional & proud watching Dave perform this live.... Especially the end where he called out the pm & spoke about Jack, who was the young man killed during the last terror attack In London when the reason he was there in the first place was to attend a conference to help make changes to help poor communities! 😔
@@xxshanxx4290 no not every single one but I do love watching Americans reaction to UK artists..... It's great to see the UK getting some love for a change! 🤗 x
Naaaaahhh🤣🤣🤣🤣 You killed me at the start of your video Your whole face when dave said hangman😂😂 i feel you thoo💯💯 left you speechless Dave is one of my fave males UK 🇬🇧 Artists He’s 20 or 21 I get goosebumps every time I listen to black and yess he actually playing the piano 🎹
Btw the part at the end is a freestyle, and the part where he says about how the news treats Kate vs how they treat Meghan is about the royal family as Kate is white and the news loves her, but Meghan is African American and the news belittles her as much as they could and always brought her race into each new title.
that was just how it was portrayed by the daily snail..... *YAWN* ALL stories about the RF came from Meghans "camp." Thats a fact! She even helped write "finding freedom", something she recently and actively admitted to, cos the court case is coming up. Harry and Meghan profiting their HRH titles, while not actively carrying on with their patronages. And, while still using said titles, making monetary gain, NOT carrying out their charitable work. At ALL. I was her biggest fan when they started their relationship. People just seen through her earlier than I did, by saying things like, "she's a little-known actress, who, at 36 (at the time) wasn't getting any roles, she'll swoop in, marry for clout and head straight back to LA-LA land." And that was in 2017!! And lo and behold... Britain is one of *thee* most multi-cultural cities in the world. PERIODT! It's a melting pot of cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, etc.... *only in America is everything about* *"race"* PEACE
Dave is really and truly one of those artists that you'll need to listen to his tracks a few times just to catch everything. Be sure to check out both of Dave's blackbox sessions.
the ones you thought were rights activists, im not 100% sure on this but they worked in prisons looking at reforming the inmates and trying to get them back in to work when they came.out, i think the guy (jack merrit) he worked with daves family member but both the guy and girl died in an attack on london bridge where somebody started attacking people with a knife
Sorry man but you got it wrong. Jack Merritt was a victim of the London Bridge stabbing, he died after fighting with the attacker so that others could survive and get to safety.
op isn't wrong, Jack Merritt died in the London Bridge stabbing, true, he also worked on rehabilitation with Dave's brother in prison. Dave gave Jack Merritt's parents tickets to this show - the extra verse was a secret, so they didn't know he was going to rap about their son.
@@King_Lawrence Another update on this one, Jack Merritt WAS an activist who worked on helping to rehabilitate prisoners after they were released from jail. He also helped Dave and his family when Dave's brother went to jail for murder (I believe he is still incarcerated). He was a great friend of theirs but he was a victim of the London Bridge stabbing. I read that Dave invited Jack's family to the Brits so that they could see this performance & his tribute to Jack but I'm not sure about the female that was pictured.
"But Grenfell victims still need accommodation" - this dude probably missed that because it probably wasn't big news in the US but jheez he's hitting every spot.
This song and performance means so much right now.. seeing an American react too it during this time was very emotional. You could see the emotion in his face and feel it. This song means so much right now. Dave is a genius!
Good reaction bro only thing I'll say is it's ok to pause it but when you come back rewind it like 5 secs so you don't miss the bars big up yourself anyway using your platform to promote a serious message✊🏿
King Lawrence You should react to Mo Stack Daily Duppy and J Hus maybe devote a day or week to Daily Duppys very good freestyle platform and there's visual aids to help you catch the bars
Jack Merritt was the guy who thought the terrorist on London Bridge in 2017. He was a prison councillor who helped Dave’s brother a lot and became good friends with Dave as a result.
Black is such a powerful song especially this performance. Hangman is also one of my favourite dave songs. His lyrics are next level. I'm happy more people get to see him even outside of the uk. Also pausing it fairly often isn't actually such a bad thing. Gives you a chance to comment on what you're seeing or hearing. Either way good reaction bro and I look forward to more.
Mic Righteous. NO ONE in the UK spits with more passion, trust. His new album "Suicycle" came out yesterday, & is feckin' genius. Made me think, feel: beautiful. Man's trying to help ppl w/MH issues, couldn't respect him more if I tried. Listen 'Darkness' from the new album, or 'Pathways' from his previous work 'I Am Reckless'. If they don't move you, your soul's cold; yeah, listen 'Pathways', but prepare for deep feels, bruv. Love yr work, man, keep 'em coming. UK respect & friendship.
Hey new subscriber 👋🏼 - Dave is a lyrical genius and his word play is incredible. I saw you catch some of his word play in this. Watch out for that in all his songs because he does it a lot. Please can you react to black the official video because the visuals are amazing and it’s slightly different to the live version. Also Dave - psycho (this song especially has a lot of wordplay) and Dave - streatham. Thank you great reaction 👏🏼 (one small bit of advice - when you pause it’s good to skip back 10 seconds so you don’t miss any bars) 😁
@@King_Lawrence if you react to Disapointed and still disapointed only fair that before you react to Wiley who is the other counterpart of that beef and react to his diss tracks too
Jack Merritt was killed by a terrorist on London Bridge and was an amazing guy that helped Dave’s family while Dave’s big brother was going through his court case
Jack Merritt was killed during the London terror attacks he helped rehabilitate daves brother the most awful thing about it he was murdered by the terrorist he was trying to help rehabilitate
Dave is amazing, the fire and truth he speaks are pure and he lit up the Brits. The graphics on the piano were amazing and his performance brought tears to my eyes. I felt every word. Dave speaks to millions and for millions. ❤❤❤
Jack was killed in the London terror attack along with others, but it was Jack that helped in rehabilitations for prisoners and helped out Dave when his brother got a life sentence. That’s why it meant so much to Dave because he could see the good in people and not judging them based on skin colour. Great reaction new sub here 🇬🇧✊🏼🇺🇸
Jack Merritt was a lawyer who helped saves big brother with his court cases (fought against the corrupt system). Unfortunately jack died in the London Bridge terror attack after being stabbed
