First American I have ever seen do a truly great NZ accent. Its extremely rare for anyone to be able to do a New Zealand accent and i think coming from the American tonality its even harder than say a Brit or Australian. well done. I'm from Auckland so i can tell this is not some cheap parlor trick accent this is a very well crafted precise accent you have built.

There are so many different sub-accents within NZ. There's a southland one, a Waikato one, an Auckland/Wellington one, and even a cricket one. The accent Amy shows us here is very much a "New Zealand Broadcaster" accent. It's so good it's quite surreal. The part that really gets me is at 3:57 when she says "ok?". The infliction and everything is absolutely perfect.

@Rooxie973

@@uchihahikaku1630 There exists a broad New Zealand English: compare Simon Bridges to Bill English. Then compare the youth of south Auckland to anyone from the Southland region. I agree that the majority of us have a very small degree of accent variation but there certainly are outliers. I'm from the Manawatu region, and I now live in Auckland; people often ask me where I'm from.

Congruent with your note about the way Kiwis order in a coffee shop or whatever, I've noticed in my watching of American, New Zealander, Australian, and Canadian cooking shows (Masterchef, mainly) that Kiwis seem to be culturally the nicest people. We say that Canadians have a pathological cultural niceness, but I've not noticed much of a difference in the behavior of ordinary Canadians from the behavior of ordinary Americans on such shows, and even the Australians don't seem that vastly different, but the New Zealanders seem just utterly sweeter, friendlier, and nicer to each other than any of the other English-speaking contestants. Of course I know it's a TV show, and it's dangerous to generalize too much, and so forth, but within the culture of the show and the contest, there's quite a discernible difference.

What she says about New Zealand pleasantries is so true! I didn't realize it fully until she explained it. We had a guy from NZ working here in the Midwest with a bunch of us Americans, and every time you saw him or he needed to consult with you about something, it wasn't just a "Hey, I've a question for you" and etc. It was, "Hey, how's it going?" And he would come about to the point of consultation so gently and sweetly that it made you feel like you were his best friend.

This is so true. Kiwis like to exchange niceties before they actually discuss what they are after whether it's a face to face or phone based conversation. They are very polite, generally. They would always say, "Yes, please." or let your pass car with a big smile or let you use an unconsumed parking ticket.

I'm genuinely impressed by this. I love doing accents, I'm a bit of a parrot, and my mum is Aussie, dad is a New Zealander with a very neutral accent. I've mastered a few accents, to the point where people can ask me to do a specific region of South Africa, Republic of Ireland or Northern England (I can't figure out Manchester or Newcastle though. Geordie is just incomprehensible). But even though I've got Kiwi blood in me, and I've been to New Zealand more often than anywhere else, I could never wrap my head around the accent. I always got stuck on the way the "i" becomes a "u" sound. My cousins would make fun of me if I dared to try my version of the accent, but I'd swear at them in German, which normally put a stop to that. Anyway this video, 9 years old be damned, might help me practice my NZ vocals. Thank you!

One thing I noticed about New Zealand, is that in Aukland, a lot of people say their i's like a really sharp "i" sound, really like and "eee" sound just shortened right down (similar to a white south african Johannesburg accent). But some accents it's more of a short "e" sound, and others it's the more typical "u" sound, like "fush and chups".

my goodness. It's impossible not to instantly adore this woman! She does completely nail the accent, but what she really gets right is the 'pleasantries'... and it is really cute... at least until you're in a hurry in a supermarket and spot the shortest checkout queue only to wait while the nanna in front of you takes 10 minutes to purchase her bottle of milk and denture adhesive, and makes the checkout girl an honorary granddaughter.

Hello! This was great, very informative, I've been wondering about New Zealand accents for a while, so this was really helpful. I wanted to know if you have or could possibly do a Welsh accent? North or South, but I was thinking just a standard Welsh accent, since that's what I'm trying to master right now. Thanks!
