In New Zealand, these are known as carbon farms. Entire forests dedicated to absorbing carbon dioxide and offering CO2 credits in exchange, which are then bought by large international companies to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. But these newly planted forests bring their own environmental problems.

As I watch this programme I notice that it is not mentioned that the Māori tribes own large blocks of land that have been planted for carbon farming.

@@vbarcodev9714 perhaps in this instance. My comment was general reflecting the general impressions created. Maori tribes do own significant land and are running forestry operations in New Zealand.

@michaelmcalpine4081 their trusts, and made up of hundreds if not thousands of shareholders. Other companies lease their land and use it for forestry. Very very few maori own and operate a forest

Reminds me of the tree farms in Japan. Tree monoculture doesn’t seem to be a good idea in the long run. Looks like a bomb hit the river bank and beaches.

That is cheating. the carbon absorbed by the tree is not really what is taken from the atmosphere. That number is way lower. Selling that as carbon offset actually adds CO2 to the Atmosphere.

"Carbon Credit" is a just a financial scam

If it were just financial scam, that would not be that bad. But it is a scam on actual resources.

The trees on the beach are what were left behind by the logging companies when the trees were felled and were washed down via the rivers in heavy rain. They were grown for timber and other wood products - they weren't carbon farmed.

The Labour Gov under Jacinda Adern sold The Greatest amount of Crown ( NZ Gov.) Land and Crown Forestry Blocks to 99% Foreign Corporations ever in History. The Slash issue and its destruction of the rivers and beaches has been long standing. The fines and Government action afterwards is nothing short of appalling. The landowners leasing land to Forestry Companies or growing their own if faced with no consequences will not include Slash Removal in their Lease or farming practice. Maori land run by their own Tribal Organizations is leased to Forestry Companies in enormous amounts. Not only are The Tribal Leaders not making the proper disposal of Slash a condition of the lease they are also not making the reinstatement of the fencing removed or destroyed by the forestry a condition when the lease is finished.

Love how the Maori, driving her six kids in her gas guzzling truck, is portrayed as the victim, instead of an integral part of the problem.

What is the practical alternative in a very rural / isolated area, which is prone to flooding? A 4wd is a necessity in these areas not some kind of fashion statement. The only EV pickup currently available in New Zealand is the LDV et60 which is 2wd and costs nz$80k, approx 30k more than a diesel equivilant ford ranger or hilux.

yeah - before we even had the term carbon farming, the trees in rivers and washed to beaches are from the logging industry
