Bragging here...my father, Robert E. Maloney was the Chief of Power and Propulsion for the F-15 project (X-15 until production). I can remember him coming home, incredibly excited, saying, "We're going vertical, we're going vertical!!!" after reviewing his team's latest test engine results. He explained how the thrust to weight ratio was greater than 1 for the first time in aviation history. He also held the same position for the F-16 project until his death in 1976 at 54 years old. I am so proud of him and his enduring accomplishments.

The F-15E and F-15 EX are currently in use. Both are multirole fighters capable of air to air and air to ground combat. The gun onboard is the M-61 Vulcan cannon, a 20mm weapon that is on a lot of fighters since the 1950’s. The A-10 uses the 7 barreled GAU-8 Avenger 30mm cannon.

Just one minor correction, and s couple more details: the F-15E is the ground attack version. It could, in a pinch, defend itself from another fighter, but that isn't what it is intended for. The F-15C and D are the air superiority fighters that will be replaced by the EX. The F-22 Raptor was originally going to completely replace the F-15C and D models, but for a lot of reasons, it never did so both the F-15 and F-22 are currently in USAF service as air superiority fighters

I was an F-15 crew chief from 1996-2000 94FS. I concur with his explanation. He forgot to say that it was the only fighter that could increase its speed during a vertical climb. The real secret was the radar, which is what the aircraft was built around.

@michaelrunnels7660
@michaelrunnels7660 2 месяца назад
@@RAYROTHSTEIN66 Actually, the F-15 radar was always "better" than the F-14 radar. The AWG-9 was more powerful and could see farther at 150 miles, but the APG-63 on the F-15 could identify targets by aircraft type at it's maximum range of 100 miles. The F-14 AWG-9 could not identify a target at any range because it's targets were only blips on a screen. As a result of the Desert Storm ROE insisting that you must identify a target before shooting at it, the F-14 was not allowed to shoot at anything it couldn't identify visually (about 5-6 miles) while the F-15 could identify and shoot at targets at any range. As a result, the score in Desert Storm was that the F-15 had 34 air-to-air kills while the F-14 had 1 helicopter kill. F-14 pilots in Desert Storm were VERY frustrated and angry that their radar couldn't do what the F-15's radar could.

Top Gun, the first one, and the last plane Maverick flew in the new Top Gun, was an F-14. Fun Fact: I was stationed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, CVN-71, from 1993-97. I was on Catapult #3, the Waist Catapult. The F-14 was decommissioned soon after I joined the Roosevelt, but I had the pleasure of launching many an F-14 Tomcat off of the catapults. It is an amazing feeling to be under the plane as either a Holdback Operator or Top Side Petty Officer. The roar of the engines at full throttle is something to experience. Boarded at NAS Alameda, went under the Golden Gate to like 10-miles offshore and they started recovering and launching F-14s. One of the highlights of my teenage life being on the deck while those monsters were roaring by. Then they took us to the mess hall where we had steak and eggs. Then we went into the crew berths, where it smelled like the sewers, which is why when I was 17 I enlisted in the Army Infantry instead of following in the footsteps of my brother and brother-in-law. 😂

I was stationed in Galena, Alaska in 1983-84. We were the closest interceptor base to the former Soviet Union. We had two F 15s on continual alert, if the Defense Early Warning radar chain picked up a bogey, the F15s would scramble to investigate. If it turned out to be a Bear Bomber, we'd show those boys the way home. They both had a full load for their Vulcan 20mm cannon as well as 4 AIM9 Sidewiders and 4 AIM7 Sparrows to encourage the Bomber crew to leave our airspace. It was pretty awesome to watch them scramble, their two F100 engines had tremendous static thrust in full afterburner, as soon as their landing gear retracted the pilots stood them on their tails for a vertical climb. It was a sight to see! 😃

As to the F15-EX... the first 6 just got delivered to the US, there's approximately 150 more paid for. Anyways best way to think of it, what if after decades of service, a planner looked at it and realized if they gave it more internal structures, it not only would last longer (planes lifespans are measured in flight hours, the average Russian plane last 2,000 - 4,000 flight hours, the Average American plane about 6,000 to 8,000... the F15EX lasts 22,000), it got upgraded engines (more fuel efficient and way more powerful), and an extra pylon on each wing for more missiles (either 12 medium ranged, the previous could only carry 4; or 22 short ranged missiles, the previous could again only carry 4... now most likely it will carry something like 10 medium range as they're more useful, and 2-4 short ranged)

The 333rd Lancers is due to be be disbanded due to Air Force cutbacks. I see the F15E Strike Eagles fly over my house on a regular basis sometimes low and fast. The 4th Fighter Wing got its start at beginning of WW2 as a group of American volunteers flying in the RAF. Hence the name Eagle Squadrons. The wing consists of the of the 334th, 335th and 336th squadrons. When Americ entered the war, they became the 4th Fighter Group. Their motto is Fourth But First. They were among the first attacks on the opening night of the First Gulf War. Would hope the base gets some of the new F15EX Strike Eagles as the ones now are 30 years old. The F-15EX is basically when you ask how many missiles do you want a jet to carry and the general just says "Yes". It is being created with the idea using stealth fighters to track targets and send the information to the F-15EX far behind to launch long range missiles so the stealth fighters can save their internally carried missiles only if necessary, as they can carry very few while maintaining stealth and can use them on more important targets that non-stealth fighters can't reach as they are far behind frontlines. Like AWACs (planes with big radars that are essential for modern air warfare) or ground based Anti-Air or radar systems.

Love watching your videos. Like other of your viewers, I'm from St. Louis, MO, where they build this impressive fighter. As a teen, in the 70's i first saw the F15 take off, escorted by 2 F4 Phantoms, all 3 side by side down the runway. At wheels off the runway, the F15 went vertical and just left the 2 Phantoms! Amazing! Several other comments recommended an air show. You should find one next trip. Thanks again for your Videos.

They only look similar. In reality, the F-14 was made to be solely an interceptor, but a very heavy one. Its loaded weight is 61,000 pounds. The F-15 is longer by a foot, but its wingspan is 2/3 the length and its loaded weight is just 20,200 pounds. What all this says is that the Tomcat was much bigger and it relied in its speed and radars to get to the combat area first and target the enemy from far away, avoiding medium and close range encounters. The Eagles are far more maneuverable and in A2A encounters are generally more lethal than the F-14. That’s why the F-18 lasted and the 14 did not.

TOP GUN: that was the F14 Tomcat. a swept wing navy fighter built to handle Navy carrier launches and landings, with a "swing wing" setup, where the wings could go from straight out to a swept shape to adjust for maneuvers or speed. the F15 Eagle is a joint-strike fighter, primarily land based with the Air Force, and has been re-adapted multiple times to fill different roles. currently in 2024 it is getting yet another refit for more modern uses, simply because it is just a stinkin good airframe

The original Top Gun was an F-14 Tomcat, they also used F-111 Aardvark. In Top Gun 2 they are using F-18 Super Hornets. Top Gun is about Navy Fighter Jets. The F-15, F-16, F-22, etc are US Air Force.

And the F-35 is Air Force, Marines, and Navy with the A, B, and C models. Great jets but the F-15 EX is a beast with all the munitions it can carry. I foresee the Air Force using the F-35 as kind of a wild weasel to stealthily detect enemy radars, send the target info to F-15 EXs trailing by 50-100 miles and the F-15s pulling the trigger with a HARM missile.

@mikek0135 Aardvarks were mission specific, more of a bomber than a fighter. they typically deployed from bases in West Germany and the UK to deliver tactical nukes against Warsaw Pact targets should the Russkis get frisky with their tanks. The F105 Thunderchief had the same mission earlier in the Cold War, and they were used mostly as bombers in Vietnam. Being a Thud driver was an unhealthy occupation.

Maybe, been a long time since I’ve seen the movie. Too many discrepancies in regards to aircraft in that movie such as Goose hitting his head on the canopy and dying. The reality is that these canopy are designed for the pilot to eject through the glass in the event of failure. So yeah, good movie, horribly inaccurate.

There was an instance where a the pilot and WSO ejected from an F-14 and the WSO died, just like in the movie. I haven't heard of it being a problem, though. They just used that one instance to make drama in the movie, I believe.

The small town I live in in Southern Oregon is home to the 173rd fighter wing training base for the F-15's. I feel very fortunate that we get to see these amazing machines flying around the skies everyday. We even have public access roads that go right by both ends of the main runway and people stop all the time to get pictures of the jets flying really low directly overhead as they're landing and taking off. I've been fortunate enough over the years to have done a lot of construction and maintenance type work at the air base, even all the way out on the flight line, and I'll tell you what, those jets are impressive up close. They are even constructing a memorial in one of our parks downtown and they're mounting an F15 body (no engines of course) on a large concrete pedestal in the middle of the park. If you would like to see some close up pictures I can run down to the park and get them for you, it's only a mile from my house, just let me know and where to send them if you do. 😁

Before that they carried 4 AIM-7's on the fuselage. And 4 AIM-9's, 2 under each wing. There was a saying about the F-15. It shoots down whatevers up and blows up whatevers down. She could carry a plethora of bombs.

The F-15 Super Eagle if I'm not mistaken has had its entire flight hydraulic controls replaced by Fly by Wire making it not only lighter it has also had a flight computer installed that allows the pilot to push the plane to its limits and not go further. The computer also controls the Engine output. So, that allows the Super Eagle to fly just like the F-22 even though it doesn't have flexing exhaust nozzles, but fly as it does. It's frame has been stiffened allowing along with weight reduction to carry more and or higher weapons. Say like a 17ft missile that most planes can't.

The F-15 has been in continuous service in the USAF. the new one is simply the latest updated version. The F-22 does not replace it and neither does the F-35, they each have their own use in the air fleet, but the F-15 is stepping back from its position as the front-line fighter to a supporting role as more of a bomb truck and ground attack aircraft.

When I was in basic traing at Lackland AFB, I remember marching alone somewhere, I forget exactly where. I heard jet rumbling behind a backdrop of trees when from the treeline sprung 2 F15s going straight vertical! They went from the top of the treeline and into the clouds in mere seconds. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen! I was actually frozen in place for awhile just stunned. Later at Cannon AFB, during an airshow, I witnessed an F15 firsthand. The plane was coming in for a landing, or so I thought, and as it was coming down, the nose pointed up more and more. As soon as the plane was vertical, the F15 pilot hit the afterburners and the F15 shot straight up into the sky. It went from maybe 15 feet from the runway to being out of sight once again in seconds. There's a video here on RU-vid that better explains what happened to the F15 with one wing missing. The dude on your video didn't mention the "spiral of death" that most pilots would have ejected from. I'll leave it at that.

The F-14 is very well known because it was used in the movie Top Gun. The Air Force F-15 and the Navy F-14 both came out in the mid 1970s. They both had 2 engines and twin tails, but that's where the similarity stops. The F-14 had swing wings and was very underpowered because the F-401-400 engine that it was initially suppose to use wasn't ready. At 1,544 mph it wasn't as fast as the F-15, nor could it carry any bombs until 1993. It also had much shorter range. It finally got the correct engine in the 1990s. The main mission of the Navy F-14 was as an interceptor for fleet defense, not air superiority. The F-14 safety record is one of the worst in U.S. Naval history as it lost 145 F-14s to accidents out of 712 made. The total number of kills from U.S. Navy F-14s is 6; 4 Libya fighters, 1 helicopter in Desert Storm in 1991, and 1 unarmed U.S. Air Force F-4 Phantom during an accidental shoot down. It was retired in 2006, while the F-15 is still being manufactured today.

Fun fact: America developed the F-15 in response to the Soviet deployment of their Mig-25 Foxbat. The thing was we knew almost nothing about this Soviet aircraft except that we could observe it traveling at speeds previously unheard of for a combat aircraft. It was hypothesized that it was made of ultra light weight materials and could carry a considerable arsenal of munitions. So presented with what is effectively a flying Soviet boogeyman of an aircraft, the US developed a jet purpose built to murder said boogeyman and establish absolute air superiority. Here's the funny part: The Mig-25? That supposedly technological leap ahead that got the US so worried it built a monster like the F-15 Eagle? It's completely garbage. It is actually very heavy and requires it's massive engines just to get off the ground and thus has a very limited capacity for weaponry. It is also not particularly maneuverable. It's sole mission profile that it theoretically could perform well was to carry out a high speed interception of an incoming enemy bomber. Yeah, the Soviets trying to show off their new toy and be really vague about its capabilities only inspired the US to make something faster, better armed and more maneuverable. Fun addendum: When the F-22 Raptor was being designed, it was not being built to beat Migs, or Sus, or chinese J-10s. It's primary design requirement was that it had to be able to beat the F-15 in air to air combat because nothing has ever beaten THAT jet. So yeah, it's gotten to the point where the US is having to compete against itself in arms development. Please enjoy what I assume to be free health care down in NZ :-)
