Frozen custard is like the creamiest, richest ice cream you've ever eaten. It's one of the best frozen confections ever created! Once you've had it, you'll turn up your nose at plain old ice cream! lol (In my humble opinion) And if you really want to experience true decadence, place a big scoop of vanilla frozen custard on top of warm apple pie, warm fudge brownies or between two giant fresh from the oven, homemade Toll House Chocolate Chip cookies! Heavenly! There are plenty of recipe videos online for making your own authentic frozen custard. I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that I'd love to see Atlanta whip up a batch one of these days!

The crazy thing is that there are so many deserts not shown here that are ridiculously good. However, I will say that if you go to a major event at almost anyone's home in South Carolina there will be a coconut cake. And they're usually made like those thin, multi-layer chocolate cakes you saw in the video. Banana Pudding is usually there as well but it's rare to get a real one anymore as everyone got lazy and does the jello pudding version because it's easy. Folks who like it try and say they prefer the cold version with whip cream but it's actually a completely different type of dessert.

Louisiana could have been represented by bread pudding, pralines, or Bananas Foster. It's a great state for food. You need an ice cream freezer to make your own frozen custard. If you just put custard in your freezer, it will come out like a hard block of ice. Desserts like this need to be agitated as they freeze to prevent them from forming large crystals. I'm sure you could make some of these yourself. Just do a search for recipes. You should be able to make snickerdoodles at home, for instance.

In the 80’s Mississippi Mud Pie became a thing at a restaurant we went to. I started making it (so easy, Oreo cookie crust, ice cream of your choice and whipped cream on top). It was such a hit with my children that they started requesting it on their birthdays instead of cake. It gets melty , all of the ingredients all running together, yum. Some of the really inexpensive desserts came out of WWII times when food was rationed for the soldiers and moms made the best of it and came up with delicious but inexpensive desserts. No need to travel to try bourbon balls or buckeyes. I’m from Illinois, and the video listed caramel or cheese corn as our state dessert. We consider those snacks, not desserts! You have already made our state pie, pumpkin. While you may know this dessert as a Thanksgiving classic, Illinois went the extra mile and named pumpkin pie as its official state pie in 2015. This easy pumpkin pie recipe takes just five minutes to prepare and will last in the freezer for up to two months after it's been baked. And the other dessert Illinois is famous for are Brownies! There have hundreds of ways to make brownies. Brownies made their debut at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, so I thought it was only fair to credit Chicago for one of the world’s favorite baked goods. After all, the original recipe, which contains a pound of chocolate and a pound of butter, is a good one. You can find the original recipe for the 1893 world’s fair brownies online……I looked it up and interestingly it has apricot preserves incorporated in the recipe. I love your videos!

Wisconsin, being the top dairy state, has a famous butterbuger and fresh custard ice cream (from our dairy farms) chain restaurants called Culver's, named after two Wisconsin brothers who founded it. Fresh beef and custard ice cream from our locally state sourced cows!!! It's 4x the cost than a McDonald's or Burger King, etc but so worth it for the fresh ingredients and varied menu. There are Flavors of the Day each month full of delicious, yummy concoctions like Crazy for Cookie Dough, Oreo Cheesecake, Dulce de Leche Cheesecake, Caramel Fudge Cookie Dough, Andes Mint Explosion, Butter Pecan, etc.and during the fall months they bring out delicious sweet potato fries and Pumpkin shakes that taste just like a homemade pumpkin pie batter. The restaurants are so popular that it has expanded into some surrounding states like MN, MI, IL, etc. Interestingly, my aunt worked for 40 years in HR at one of the other Culver brother's mortgage and insurance company called MGIC and knew the head honcho in the workplace and socially as they are avid golfers and his company would hold retreats that I remember my mom and I tagging along to stay in the $500+ a night suites at the famed Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago right on the famed Magnificent Mile and it held an Olympic size pool; or up to Kohler which holds the original fouding company and main corporate and manufacturing companies that comes up with and then produces all the fancy smart toilets, luxury Jacuzzi infinity bathtubs, multiple shower heads with a main waterfall tops, along with sinks and all other housing appliances like the aforementioned and more. And they built from scratch and own 3 prestigious golf courses that are built right on or near Lake Michigan for breathtaking views and designed by super famous course designers like Pete Dye and one course mimics playing in Ireland or St. Andrew's...and these courses have held Ladies U.S. Open Championships, Men's PGA Championships and two Ryder Cup tournaments that are held every 2 years in locations around the world as it's more informal format like a golfing "soccer" world cup with gen interaction and participation of rivalry encouraged between the European golfers vs American golfers and they all stay at the super luxurious The American Club, which is mainly members only and my aunt's company had corporate dealings, and again we were blesed to tag along and stayed in a huge $700 a night suites with a $15,000 Kohler jet massaging extra long tub along with the smart toilet and the rainfall shower. My dad has has the good fortune of golfing the course that overlooks Lake Michigan a couple times but you pay $$$$ to do so if you aren't a member.

Hey, NZ fam.... Atlanta, here's your challenge ...flan! -4 eggs -2 cans evaporated milk (12 oz, I know you don't use oz, but this is just so you have the amounts for conversion). -1 can condensed milk (I think it's 10 oz) -Dash vanilla extract -3 oz cream cheese (this is what makes it Puerto Rican style, you can leave it out, but it's better with). -Cinnamon (optional) -2/3-1C sugar You'll need a square or round cake pan (glass or metal, doesn't matter), plus a larger pan that it can sit inside. Over medium to low heat, caramelize all the sugar--just keep stirring it until it has all melted into a golden liquid. Don't worry if it clumps up on your spoon, just keep stirring, it'll happen. When it's all liquid and golden, pour it into the pan. Combine the cream cheese with the condensed milk (hand mixer). Taste a bit, because-why not!? 🙂 Once it's well combined, add in the eggs, evaporated milk, cinnamon and vanilla, beat to combine. Pour all of it right on top of the sugar in the pan. Fill the larger pan halfway with warm water, then place the cake pan with mixture in it. The water should be about halfway up the side of the cake pan, not over. Stick it in the oven (not really a need to preheat), set temp to 400F (I think that's 200-205C). Walk away for forty minutes! You can check it halfway to turn it, to make sure the top is will be an even color. When you remove it, it may jiggle a little, but the top should be fully cooked and golden. (If there are burned spots, you can flake that off when it's cooled). Allow it to cool completely. You can serve it as is, with the sugar caramel in the bottom of the pan, or you can be dramatic: take a large shallow bowl that's bigger than the pan. A plate might work, but it shouldn't be completely flat, as the caramel will go all over. Run a knife around the edge of the pan. Put the plate or bowl on top of the cake pan, and quickly flip. If you used a glass cake pan, you might want to ask your mom for help. Cut into pieces, and spoon caramel over the top. Enjoy!

I'd say that the statewide dessert (and I'm surprised that it didn't even make this list at all) would be bread pudding. It was a way to not waste two or three days old bread by soaking bite size pieces in an egg custard base then baking it . Many variations are available , only limited by your imagination. When I was a child and young girl, we made homemade ice cream many times every summer and for holidays through out the year. The base was a cooked vanilla custard that had several cups of cream added to it, before it went into the ice cream maker. I can't find the exact recipe today, and although I would attempt to do it from memory here, I wouldn't do that to you over the internet. You will need an ice cream maker. I have no idea if they have them in New Zealand. The recipe below is as close as I could find from my childhood. (I have no idea why they add flour in the recipe, but I copied it from their recipe, so I left it in. We never used it when a kid, the eggs would thicken the custard.) Old-Time Custard Ice Cream (from Taste of Home) 1-1/2 cups sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 cups whole milk 4 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 pints heavy whipping cream 3 tablespoons vanilla extract Directions In a large heavy saucepan, combine sugar, flour and salt. Gradually add milk until smooth. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat to low; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat. In a small bowl, whisk a small amount of hot mixture into eggs; return all to pan, whisking constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir 2 minutes. Remove from heat immediately. Quickly transfer to a large bowl; place bowl in a pan of ice water. Stir gently and occasionally for 2 minutes. Press plastic wrap onto surface of custard. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Stir cream and vanilla into custard. Fill cylinder of ice cream freezer two-thirds full; freeze according to manufacturer's directions. (Refrigerate remaining mixture until ready to freeze.) Transfer ice cream to freezer containers, allowing headspace for expansion. Freeze 2-4 hours or until firm. Repeat with remaining ice cream mixture. We would add fresh strawberries, chopped peaches, etc into the ice cream base before starting to churn it, you don't need any added sugar.

Depending upon the source, California’s favorite dessert is (in order of my memory): fortune cookie, chiffon cake, chiffon pie, maple bar donut, hot fudge sundae, boysenberry pie, Meyer-lemon cake, and one claiming the avocado parfait as the “unofficial state dessert”. Per the state library, California does not have an official state dessert. We’ve got a state amphibian, land mammal, fish, water mammal, dinosaur, nut, theater, museum … we even have a state soil (San Joaquin Soil was designated as the official state soil in 1997); but no dessert or any food item.

This was my nightmare growing up!!!! Oh how I hated it! From my TX mother to all the older texas women in my family, my NY father and myself, who grew up in NY but now have lived back in TX for almost 20 years. You couldnt pay us to eat this dessert that was always at Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I make a water gate cake but it does not have marshmellows or pineapples in it and it’s delicious it looks like a Christmas wreath with cherries

As you heard, Nanaimo bars are Canadian. Created in Nanaimo B.C. Canada. Nothing else tastes like it.

Ah yes, everything always comes back to the Pavlova when discussing food. Once it is safe to travel again, you definitely should make videos of trying all these different desserts in all 50 states and territories.

Minnesota is mostly rhubarb pie than blueberries muffins. We do have lots of wild blueberries and rhubarb is pretty much everywhere. Yummy!

Where I grew up (Penna) there is 'Rita's Frozen Ice' and they have frozen custard. They close during the winter. Since I loved the custard so much, I bought several 1/2 gallons and put them in the freezer. Although okay, they did lose much of the appeal.

I'm in Virginia, our Rita's went out of business a few years ago. But I did the same thing as you with the frozen custard, and it did lose a bit of the pizzazz 😞

I love Pavlova! It is one of my favorite desserts. We used to have a Kiwi cafe here in Arlington, Virginia (right outside of DC) called Cassat’s and they made an AMAZING pavlova. Sadly they closed a couple years ago. I miss it.

Don’t let anybody fool you, in Pennsylvania we love shoofly pie! Yeah the Whoopie pie definitely has its place but shoofly pie is the staple for Pennsylvania Mennonite and Amish desserts

I was born and raised in Vermont, yes...apple pie is great but I would have thought a dessert with our amazing Vermont maple syrup would be a better choice, it can be a maple creemee, or maple syrup on bread dough, maple frosted doughnuts, oh so many choices!

Do you have access to an old fashion ice cream maker? If so, you can easily make the frozen custard ice cream. There are recipes online or most machines come with basic ice cream recipes and I know the one I bought decades back had a recipe for the custard ice cream. Plus, if you search online for some recipes of the items you want to try, you can make most if not all of them right from your own kitchen. I know Atlanta could put those together in a blink!

I know this isn’t a dessert but if you ever come to South Carolina you MUST try boiled peanuts. So good

That was a fun dessert road trip around the United States! I’m from California and I am not so sure about donuts being dessert because I have eaten them for breakfast with coffee. Frozen custard is a favorite of mine, similar to ice cream but the egg makes it richer and creamier. Thanks for being you and sharing your lovely family with us.💕

I think donuts are a breakfast food for the majority of the country. I've not heard of anyone having them for dessert before.

Live in CA and yeah I wouldn't call donuts a popular dessert here. I would have to say ice cream because we have so many homemade or small batch fabulous ice cream shops here in So Cal.

I agree. We have a lot of donut shops here, but favorite dessert, not sure about that. I would have to say hot fudge sundae or banana split. Love all desserts, I think California doesn't discriminate and just loves them all! ♡
