Ah, yes. It all depends on how you look at it. A legend has it that a town in Texas was experiencing a riot and the sheriff called for help from the Texas Rangers. When a single Ranger showed up, the sheriff asked why only one Ranger was sent. The Ranger replied, "Well, there is only one riot."

@MS SARA THE EVANGELIST Too close to friendlies. A 105mm artillery shell the AC-130 Gunship used requires a minimum safe distance of like 600meters which anything within that distance is danger close and you risk killing your own people. A 500lb bomb from a plane requires a lot farther distance from the blast. So artillery and airstrikes are out of the question for this mission. If i remember right they were out of range of friendly artillery anyway.

23 families continue to grow because of John Chapman's sacrifice. He knew he was a dead man walking...he could've just laid down and died, like 99% of us would have done, or instead do what he did. Neil Roberts had a wife and children also. Such a tough sacrifice , save his brothers and leave his children without their father or the opposite, he chose to get 24 dads back to their babies and I respect that so damn much but as a single dad of 3 beautiful baby girls , it breaks. My heart to think of the lives they’ll live missing him as they grow up. Chapman’s tram leader talked in detail about the whole thing, how just before Roberts fell they were going into a hover in the safe area they were in not knowing there were enemy jsut below them when hit . Talked about the terror in his heart when he visually checked his TeAm on the decent and realized Chapman was not at the gate anymore. When they got in the next helo and we’re accessing up the mountainside to the ridge he said he looked out the back of the Chinook at the dawn rim of light and how beautiful it was just literally seconds before running out the back and he said he thought of his daughters and how hard this was going to be for them, then said out loud “I Love you girls “ he said he fully expected abd planned to die up there to try and get him tram menebr hack . Such a willingness to sacrifice all for their brothers . My heart goes out to their kids and just so greatful fir Their Sacrifice. Chapman killed 7 total enemy ,,,7 injured and in shock he kept hittin it , legendary! Much love brother!

"I wonder if he had a family". That is the perfect question, young man. He did, but he believed what all service members believe: "We fight them there, so we dont have to fight them here". He made a decision to fight for his country, so that his family would never have to see the ugliness of war, in their own front yard.

But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. The Air Force them to take another look at John Chapman's case for the Medal of Honor. That's when this footage was unearthed, and his Air Force was upgraded to the Medal of Honor. As of 1919, no one can receive more than one Medal of Honor. So whomever did the commentary on the video was wrong in making the assumption of a 2nd Medal of Honor. This was part of Operation Anaconda, which was our largest battle in Afghanistan at that time. The entire operation was fubar from the start, well before Neil Roberts fell out of the helicopter and required rescuing. We lost 5 men on that mountain and at least a dozen were injured because TF 11 commanders ignored intelligence and the operation rules by landing not one, not two, but three helicopters in the same spot and all were downed. It was a bloody couple of weeks. Oh, and I believe New Zealand SAS was involved in this operation. There are a few really great books about this, including a biography of John Chapman called Alone At Dawn.

John Chapman was married with 2 young daughters when he died in 2002. It must have devastated them to hear he had been killed in action. But how he went out was one of the bravest things I've ever heard and seen. He was one tough soldier. God Rest his Soul.

They have had to delay it a few times because of the pandemic but, have resumed the filming of the movie this year. This was the very first Medal of Honor to be captured on video by a drone. It is hard to describe the significance of his actions during this day to those looking from the outside in. Forgive me as I type this up on a word document and transcribe it to youtube, however, I believe you (and those that watch this too) are a part of the family that knows his name, his actions, and now are caretakers in keeping him alive through his name. To start off, an Air Force Combat Controller's main priority is to call in airstrikes and air support for the group he is assigned to. They are special operations and go through incredible training to be able to uphold that priority while also being able to fill in as a member of the squad with other special operation forces. Then you also have the SEALs, which is well known for being the best of the best and one of the hardest, if not the hardest, training school in the world! With that said, you can see that there is a huge gap of (initial) training and ability between this group. In despise of that, TSgt Chapman still went back out with those men (even though he didn't have to). That is why that charge up to the first bunker is just sheer, awe-inspiring. Under fire, he made that split-second decision to protect his teammates and to take the threat head on, alone. It's why in the military, those we work with become our new family. It doesn't matter where you came from, what race or creed you claim; we slowly become an ever-expanding family. It will forever be a mystery why he made that decision, but I believe he did it out of love for his guys. In the next part, I wanted to talk about when the explosions are going off around him. On the screen it is one thing, but, live it is extremely different. I can't even fathom the pain he was going through (just that alone)! In the bunker he was in, the walls protected him from the explosions but not that overpressure from the blast. From my own personal experience, I received permeant hearing loss from a burst nowhere near that caliber (even with hearing protection on too). How he was able to walk and fight again after all of that... I don't know. I can't really describe next because I truly don't know how to put it. All I know is that because of him, those men were able to go back home to their loved ones. Thank you again for keeping his name and spirit alive.
