@@vinokai Even though the adrenaline was the only thing keeping him conscious, the decision to keep fighting was all his. It's not likely he could have known in the low light conditions of early morning the extent of his wounds, so even knowing he was wounded I doubt that the thought "I'm going to die anyway" was in his head. That means Chapman was fighting 100% out of the goodness of his heart and the duty and respect of a soldier. I wholeheartedly agree that he deserves eternal respect.

Think of how the Druids deal with a persons passing vs the Roman Catholic vigil. Same thing.

Or maybe, that's just the way he was. Whatever the cause or reason, we who remain are lucky to have him or her around. or, more succinctly... Thank your deity (Yahuway, God, Allah, the gods of Buddhism, chance, or whatever you believe) for giving such people who would die protecting us (whoever 'Us' is). Still pretty wordy, how about... Now as for the video i also found it difficult to watch because i had the privilege of knowing the man personally. When i first heard about what had happened i was shocked, but the shock wore off quickly. Why he did what he did is just who he was as a man he had a love for his fellow brothers that ran very deep. As a man of honor that he was he layed down his life to save the lives of others even though he didn't know many of them. He was a great man down to earth and easy to get along with. No one has gotten two in over a hundred years - and many of those who did in the First World War are cases of a soldier or marine given both the Army AND Navy versions for the same incident when the forces were fighting together. I think the “two” mentioned in the video, and the joint nature of the battle, means that theoretically another branch could nominate him, but two for the same battle is frowned upon nowadays (there was actually regulations against it until recently).

This is the ultimate expression of love. Hatred, anger, and ignorance can propel a person to do things seemingly impossible... but there are limits. A deep and abiding love for one's teammates transcends those boundaries. Hate and anger cools and falls away. Love fills your heart and will sustain you beyond the point of certain death or when lesser men will falter. To endure such pain and misery, to pick yourself up and go forward, to lay down your life so that others may live, those are the hallmarks of heroes. May God bless and keep all those who give their last breath in service to others.

If you're interested, the game Medal of Honor (2010) is actually about Operation Anaconda and the battle for Shahikot Valley and Takur Ghar, and features a fictionalized version of these events. You switch back and forth between Seals, Rangers, and Delta operatives during the four-day battle and it's actually very authentic aside from some events being slightly altered or exaggerated for gameplay's sake. It's one of my favorite war games and tries very hard to be as "real" as possible. It'd be interesting to see how well you think it succeeds having actually been in the military.
