Absolutely. The theatrics are fun and sometimes a more direct way to compliment the music or express the theme, but the drill cannot get lost in all that sauce.. Drill is a core element of the form. It’s what sets DCI/Marching band apart from concert band, or any other ensembles. So the drill should be a constant and present, element throughout most of the show with theatrics, and props, and even gimmicks woven in on top of a top-notch drill design.

I used to do Drum Corps in the UK in the 80's and 90's, it was no where near this level but was a great activity to grow up in, I have life long friends from this activity. We watched the DCI videos as we were growing up and the likes of Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Cavaliers, Cadets, Bluecoats, Velvet Knights, Freelancers, Star Of Indiana, Spirit Of Atlanta, Crossmen, Phantom Regiment and many many more were our heroes...... I went to watch DCI in 1990, 1992, 1996 and 2011..... I hope to visit again, maybe even this year. A lot has changed over the years, for me the 80's and 90's are my favourite decades of DCI, not taking anything away from the current stuff because it's still amazing. If I was going to try and explain to someone who'd never seen Drum Corps what Drum Corps was, Cavaliers 2004 would be one of the shows I'd show them....... I think they couldn't fail to be impressed by it. great vids, it's great to see someone react to this fantastic activity in the way you do. Please try and watch....... and this is definitely an 80's and 90's vibe!..... Blue Devils 1988, 1989, 1994, Cadets 1989, 1990, 1992, Velvet Knights 1989, Santa Clara Vanguard 1989, 1990, 1992, and if you like crazy drill! Star Of Indiana 1990, 1991, 1992.......... these are just a few of my faves..... check them out. Keep the vids coming.... they're great.

This video reminds me of the marching band competitions I went to when I was in high school (I wasn't allowed to join because of the cost but I watched my friends perform) The only thing I can tell you is they Practice A LOT. My friends would practice, no joke, half their summer vacation just to get the band moving together and their first competition I believe was around Sep and goes till I believe Nov unless the football team makes it to playoffs. just to put the amount of work in perspective I looked up my old high school's band page for last year (mind you this is a Public high school that when I was there was a 3A size but might be bigger or smaller now) When I was there this band was placing high in all competitions they participated in but didn't do any really big time comps like this drum corp. Great to see you react to these corps shows. The 2004 Cavaliers is a classic example of a show more driven by amazing visual drill moves, guard integration, and some fantastic music in brass and percussion. Some of the shows you are seeing in the current era of DCI (2010-2019) are a bit more Broadway like in terms of props, staging, acting, story, body movement, etc. And those shows are fantastic. But that Cavaliers show is a good example of the best from the first decade of the 2000s. If you are interested in some 1990s drum corps, or even 1980s drum corps, just to get an idea of how the activity has grown and what some of the traditions are then I would suggest checking out Madison Scouts 1995, 97, or 99. They were certainly one of the more entertaining units from the 80s and 90s. Also maybe check out Star of Indiana 1991 or 93 (very abstract, modern, contemporary) and The Cadets 92 or 95. From the 1980s I would suggest Garfield Cadets 1984 or Santa Clara Vanguard 1988 or 89 (Phantom of the Opera). The SCV shows from 86-89 began to do more with story, props, staging, and while not to the level we see today you will get an idea of where the activity came from. If you want to hear a near perfect brass line with perfect soloists and just straight up great music and marching (even if it is considered a bit old school today) listen to Blue Devils 1982 or 86. I am glad you have had a chance to listen and view the 2010s because the activity has come a long way and it is more Broadway like these days. Of course, video really does not do these shows justice and you have to see these live. Hopefully in 2021 we can get you to attend DCI Championships in Indianapolis, IN. Whatever you choose to watch is totally up to you. Just enjoy it, and thanks for posting some of your thoughts. :)

Fun fact, as they move around, typically the section/instrument section that has the melody or is to be featured in that moment, will be moving to the front adn when their times has passed, they'll move on. So part of the marching is not only to be visually appealing but as you can hear, the music changes instruments and who is playing, so it's constantly moving to move the music being played closer to the audience. A GREAT example of this, is when the drums come close, they're featured, and when they move away they fade into the background.
@kevinbs05
@kevinbs05 4 года назад
Btw, the running an playing part, yeah it's not easy to do at first. It's all about isolating your upper body from the lower. I.e. keeping it from moving while jazz running the bottom half. Oh also, cavaliers never look at other players while they move. They do something called dot marching, so they know hey I need to be 2 steps inside the 35, 11.5 steps in front of the front hash side 2. And they go straight there. So it's about memorizing all 200-250 dots per show, all the music, isolating your upper body to be able to play at the same time, etc... Yeah so much work and so much muscle memory.
@Vault800

Seeing the result of a hundred and fifty or more highly talented musicians all working at such a high level every day to be their best together just makes me proud to be a human being.

Sad that the DCI season this year is cancelled (i believe). Also, these kids (i believe 16-20 or 21) have to audition to get in these corps, and also pay a substantial amount to be in it as well.

I love the Bond films. When my Dad showed em to me in middle school, I was immediately obsessed. I had the entire collection on VHS. My favorite Bond was Roger Moore. His played more calculated, always had a plan, was more smooth. As for the films...The Spy Who Loved Me (the submarines 😎), Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, A View To A Kill, and Goldeneye were the ones I watched the most. I watched the entire collection but those were the ones I’d watch the most. They were my favorite.

As a band member you're placed on a yard line and a hash mark on that yard line and where you're supposed to stand in reference to it. Then you know how many beats/measures you have until the next place you're supposed to be. Based on the design being depicted that often means waiting until the last second and then hightailing it, although sometimes its a subtle shift

Hearing you say you are a James Bond fan made my respect level for you raise by about 10,000%. I am a HUGE James Bond fan, both the movies and the soundtrack albums. The Bond movies have had some of the best movie music ever recorded. I have all the movies on DVD and all the soundtracks downloaded (as well as LPs and CDs). I was challenging myself to figure out which movies the music they were playing in this performance were from. I'm kinda sad knowing the next movie is gonna be the last to feature the Bond character, with the new female 007 being introduced and taking over the job from Bond...James Bond (sorry, couldn't resist). I wonder if she also likes her martinis shaken, not stirred!

Honestly, I'm kinda bummed someone picked 2004 for your first reaction to Cavies. When it comes to early 2000's, they were on fire. But 2002 Frameworks, 2006 Machine (would have been my choice), 2001 Four Corners, 2003 Spin Cycle or even 2000 Niagara Falls would have been better introductions.

This (or Machine) are good choices for a first show to watch from The Cavaliers because of how accessible the themes are. Spin Cycle and Frameworks are pretty esoteric (as much as I love them). It'd be cool to see her react to something even further back like the 1995 Planets show :)

I marched in the early 2000's, so I'm super biased towards this style. I was told by one of the 2000 Cavies drum majors that a big part of the reason they were so smooth in their marching was they laid out about twice as many forms as the rest of us did at that time, so they had much shorter transitions. Obviously they were also just damn amazing at it.
