Hey Court. As an fyi, vertical take-off/landing for jets is very old technology. First developed in the late 1950's-1960's by Hawker in Great Britain. Prototypes were made and by 1969, the Hawker 'Harrior" was in service for the RAF and also the US Marine Corps. Many variants of this jet have been made over these many decades. Too my knowledge, there are still some in service for the US Marine Corps. My father was a massive fan of all types of aircraft. He took us to many airshows in the late 60's and all through the 1970's in Dayton, and Cleveland, Ohio. I have many fond memories of these trips especially the first time an airshow in Cleveland had a Hawker 'Harrior'. Not only was it there for all to walk up to it and check it out, but they flew it and showed off all its' capabilities including vertical take-off/landing, rotating while hovering 40 feet of the ground, etc. It instantly became my favorite jet!!

01:30 Yes, the Air National Guard jets that were sent to intercept Flight 93 had no missiles and minimal machinegun ammo. The plan was to ram the airliner before contact with the final target. The pilots never had to make that sacrifice because the passengers and crew fought the terrorists for control of the aircraft and forced the plane down in Pennsylvania.

Short story. I worked with a former SR71 mechanic who told me that the Japanese were enthralled with the plane. He stated that they put a tail emblem on a plane and it only flew once and on return the emblem was change. A few weeks later he was on leave in Japan and saw a model in a store window with the emblem on it for sale.

Enthralled? Auto correct may have got you or you meant enthroned. Either way I would love to know a former SR71 mechanic. My buddy flys F-35s but it’s so classified I can’t get much out of him that’s not already public knowledge. other than very vague statements left for my own interpretation. Crazy though that he met his wife stationed out where my parents beach house is. Some of the videos he has shown me are insane.

@@scotthill1600 Thank you. I work for and engine manufacture in the mid 80's to mid 90's and the people I worked with ranged from 1 who flew Spitfires for the RAF at the beginning of WW2 to mechanics on B52s to SR71 while I only had schooling.

I was working at a USAF base on 9/11, I vividly remember a complete shutdown of all aircraft in the US! The "Boneyard" in Arizona, has many US military planes, for backup. The great movie "The Right Stuff" is about the early supersonic pilots and Mercury astronauts.

In the defense of infographics, the phoenix missile used by the F-14 was based on knowledge learned from the AIM-47...which was meant to be carried by an interceptor version of the SR-71 (the YF-12). It was the first missile designed to drop from the aircraft THEN ignite its motor.

So much has been said about the F-22 and F-35 that an ignorant person will immediately believe that these tares are fantastic. But there is one "but". On both aircraft, the stealth coating begins to peel off after afterburner. Therefore, there is an order for pilots to turn on the afterburner only in case of emergency and for a short time (10-20 seconds). The maintenance of these aircraft is tens or more times more expensive than that of other aircraft. An interesting fact: American pilots have never accepted an offer to conduct a demonstration battle against Russian colleagues at any air show. Americans - on American planes, Russians - on Russian ones. The Americans have always refused. And if you want to know what they were against - here are 2 videos from the air show: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dDsK6RQjwxA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jks6TTFsglk.html hight attention from 6:25

I believe that this video is a bit out of date. The F-35 has no oxygen problem. That was solved more than a few years ago. Also, not EVERY F-35 can take off vertically (VTOL), just the F-35B. There is the regular (as regular as a F-35 can be) model F35A, used by the Air Force(s), and a F35C naval model for carrier use.

Unless I'm under some misunderstanding, the f-35 is not the only plane that can land vertically. The British harrier jet can take off and land vertically. The Americans created their own version of the harrier jet which is, what I think they model for the f-35. My other curiosity is the Russian plane that he said had such a wide vector that it could perform unbelievable stunts, the f-35 rear Jets can point straight down. I wonder if American manufacturers can come up with such a dramatic vectoring on American planes to give them equal or better turn capabilities

The more dimensions of thrust vectoring you incorporate into a fighter the greater the rear RCS becomes. The F22 could have 3D TV but determined the increase in RCS was not worth it so they designed better control surfaces that offset the advantage of 3D TV and gave the F22 incredible maneuverability in its own right with 2D TV. Also, US fighters are built to fight in the modern environment where dogfighting is increasingly rare. The F22 can more than hold its own against any other airframe out there regardless of generation. I’m not sure where Infographics got there info but the first time the F22 went up against peer nation fighters in Red Flag exercises it had a 241:2 kill ratio. Also, Russia only briefly cancelled their SU57 program and now it is believed they are doing serial production. It’s thought that they will produce 10 per year initially but may increase in the future. The Russians were also working on a counter to the F35 (SU75) it is believed that they cancelled that.

I'm afraid, Courtney that you still don't know about some of these 'facts'. I was doing aerodynamic engineering in college & I heard the plane so fast it ran into it's own bullets. It can be done in a certain way but not the way it was always told & shown in this video. And it doesn't even have to be that fast. The SU-35 is made to sound just like the brochure from Sukhoi. So none should be shot down in Ukraine, right? 🤣

@Courtney Coulston about number 49, one of the fighter pilots, a woman, has her own RU-vid channel, and she said that she and her wingman were the first two pilots in the sky on 9/11. She was to ram the tail section of any hijacked passenger jet, and her wingman was to ram the cockpit. And both of them were good with those instructions. I would link her channel, but I unfortunately did not pay attention to the channel name.

That would be Major Heather "Lucky" Penney (She was a 1st Lieutenant at the time) and Lieutenant General Marc "Sass" Sasseville (He was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time). I can't speak for everywhere in the USA, however I'm from Philly and that is geographically located close to all three attack locations so I most likely would've heard about the second fact if it was known by even a small population, but no... this was the first I heard about these unarmed fighter jets. It was a very impactful day, but when it happened, communication was not as universal as it is today so it's cool that 21 years later, thanks to the internet, I am still hearing stories about unsung heroism.
@eddiehaskell1957
@eddiehaskell1957 Год назад
A couple days after the attack, news outlets were screaming where were the fighters. George Bush was president is why they were screaming so loud. They were trying to blame the President. It was released that there were fighters in the air and were ordered to shoot down any airliner that doesn't respond and land immediately. Then a week or two later it was said the first fighters up were unarmed and were to crash into the airliners. In the past couple of years one of the pilots that went airborne with no weapons said that's what he was told to do. I didn't know it was the Air National Guard.

The bit about a plane "shooting itself" makes no sense in physics. Do you realize that people who live near the equator are traveling through space at a bit over a thousand miles per hour? Do they feel it? Of course not! That's because they have the same momentum as the surface of the earth at whatever point they are located so their net "speed" is zero! Back to the jet. As the plane gains speed so does the pilot and every other part of the plane. When not accelerating or decelerating ALL parts of the traveling plane is at rest/zero. Lets say the muzzle velocity of the bullet when fired is around 3,000 ft.sec. so THAT is it's speed when it leaves the plane, NOT zero or less. If it hits something nearby it hits it at it at about the same 3,000 ft./sec. If it hits something stationary, say close by and on the ground, then it's speed will be the COMBINED speed of the plane PLUS the speed of the bullet. The only way it could hit the plane is if it miraculously turned around and went straight back to the plane. VERY unlikely.

The F-11 Tiger is noted for being the first jet aircraft to shoot itself down.[3] On 21 September 1956, during a test-firing of its 20 mm (0.79 in) cannons, pilot Tom Attridge fired two bursts midway through a shallow dive. As the trajectory of the cannon rounds decayed, they ultimately crossed paths with the Tiger as it continued its descent, disabling it and forcing Attridge to crash-land the aircraft; he survived.[4][5]
