This is true, and I'm American. I love hockey. Grew up in the 70s and 80s in the desert SW and cant skate a lick, but no sport is faster, tougher physically, uses more mentally and, no sport is is regulated by the players like hockey.
Try hockey in canada, that is crazy, so cazy my father got in a fight inside the stadium with another guy during the battle of alberta and was stabbed after he left cause he got in another fight with another fan, happens most battle of alberta games.

I've been a hockey fan from New Zealand since 2013. I'm so glad I discovered this sport as it has changed my life. 2 weeks ago I moved to Vancouver to pursue my dream of being the first Kiwi to work in the NHL. Most likely as a Stats Analyst as I'm already one for a team in the WHL.

If you go to Canada, and parts of the Great Lakes region in America during winter, you will find parents taking their two-three year old kids onto the ice for the first time. Most have to learn to balance, but one out of ten or twenty will just figure it out in an instant, and start zooming around the rink. Ice skating is really fun for kids because if they have the balance down, they can skate faster than they can run by a long shot. Hockey is probably the most addictive sport to play because just skating fast is fun.

I will say this about going to an NHL game: the arenas looks smaller in person, but not in a bad way! You feel like you can reach out and touch the players.
They really are amazing people. One of my coworkers husbands became paralyzed after a bad hockey hit and the retired NHL players donated their sweaters to help raise money for him. They didn't know him but heard about his story. One even insisted on driving down to drop it off to ensure it arrived on time for the auction.
Hockey in Canada, isnt a sport its a religion. Every red blooded Canuck has memories as a kid skating on ice on a frozen pond, or wearing their idols jersey while playing on the street pretending they are in the cup finals. Kids yelling CC (car coming) or ignoring the calls of their parents to come inside once it gets to dark to really see properly. You should really watch the celebration videos of the 2010 Olympics in my hometown of Vancouver. When we won Gold a country very divided on its teams were singing crying and cheering together. Calgary fans hugging Edmonton fans, Toronto fans, hugging Montreal fans, it was truly amazing.

@@jmathieson15 as a kid in the 80s we usually only watched the Leafs or Habs on Saturday night. Leafs became my go to after the Jets and Nucks. Pissed the hell out of my froggy relatives, who worshiped the Habs. It's nice now that the Nucks and leafs should be the dominant teams in Canada sooner than later. Cheers

Been going To LA Kings games for 25 years. Never gets old. My favorite sport, and definitely the best live sport to witness. The speed of the game, the skilled plays, the borderline suicidal physicality, the 20,000 Insane screaming fans: something you must experience. Watching my favorite team finally get their first championship was indescribable. Best sport on Earth IMO
For Canadian kids (and parents) it’s tens of thousands of hours of waking up before dawn, going down to the freezing cold rink, sitting in cold metal bleachers…but it’s all worth it. My nephew plays hockey (he’s 7) and already the number of hours our entire family has set aside for hockey is truly incredible. Every Friday night practice for 4 hours, waking up at 5:30 for 7am games…but it’s so worth it to see that huge smile on their face when they score a goal, or make an assist, or just be on the ice with the boys. Lots of Timmies and blankets on Saturday mornings.
I remember when I was in college, the Penguins went into 5 overtimes. They played for almost 8 hours. They had players in the locker room getting IVs. Could you imagine doing that? At least they slept well that night.
This. The guys sacrifice basically everything for the team and their teammates. Greg Campbell a few years ago. Blocked a puck, broke his foot. Guy had a broken leg/foot and wouldn't come off the ice, because of his team and teammates.

I started playing hockey at age 3. I played against players who went on to play in the NHL. I've played against top athletes in other sports, yes they are talented but usually they're beating you at least half the time with GENETICS (height, size, speed, endurance etc...) All of this is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT in Ice Hockey until you have actually MASTERED THE SKILLS. ALL OF WHICH are completely foreign to our regular life: STICKHANDLING/SHOOTING/PASSING with a small rubber disc all while SKATING ON ICE at the same speed that sprinters run and keep in mind your opponent IS ALLOWED TO HIT YOU AS HARD AS HE CAN while doing this. BELIEVE ME, it is THE HARDEST sport to play.

Hockey is a sport that is so beautiful and ferocious at the same time. I've played it since I was 5 up until I left highschool and I can tell you playing hockey was some of the best times I've ever had. I've played through pain, played some minor injuries, and even begged my doctor to clear me of the major ones just so I could get back on the ice again. Plus it's also fun to skate sideways at a open skate and watch peoples jaws drop.
Nothing can match the in-game experience of an NHL arena and watching the game live. My wife and I attend about a dozen Nashville Predators games a year and I am always amazed by the parity of the League and the amazing feats of so many great players from every team. Nathan McKinnon? Incredible! Alix Ovechkin? Amazing! We've seen so many and appreciate their talent although, yes, we are still Preds fans through and throuigh and Bridgestone Arean offers arguably one of the best atmospheres there is to be had in the NHL. This woman is from the Philadelphia area and attends many sporting events and this was her visit to the Western Conference Final Game 6 against the Anaheim Ducks. The Gu9iness book of World Records attended the game 3 at Bridegstone arena for the Stanley Cup final and officially measured the volume at 29.4 decibals. I played the highest level of amateur hockey in the world called the Canadian Hockey League. Myself and guys I played with had been playing for 10-13 years or so before we could make that level, each putting in probably close to 10,000 hours of practice. Many of us did not make it to the NHL despite this. Its hard to actually quantify how good these players in the NHL really are. I have such a love and respect for this sport. It's truly beautiful.
NHL has the single greatest unique trophy of all sports, Lord Stanley's Cup. every winning player gets their named engraved onto it. every player gets to spend 1 entire day with it and do whatever he wants. players have eaten breakfast cereal from the cup, drank beers/champagne, taken it out on boats, gone swimming with it etc etc. no other pro sports trophy offers that sort privilege to players.

There isn't a great video on it, but my hometown team, the St. Louis Blues, just won their first ever championship this past year. If you want a rollercoaster of emotions you can't beat all that the team went through this past year. We were the oldest team in the league to have never won the Stanley Cup and were last in the entire league on January 5 but went on an incredible run to win it all. I'm biased but I feel like our season this past year is a microchasm of all that's amazing about hockey and what a team can mean to the city that it's in.
That last part of the video, St. Louis the day after his mother died, reminded me that you should react to highlights of the game, Brett Farve QB for the Green Bay Packers (NFL), played after his Dad passed away. Incredible performance by him.
I will say, as a player, I started skating at the age of three maybe four. However, started playing at about the same age. Most players are putting in hours a day, up at 5 maybe 6 am to hit the weights, skills practice, conditioning, and not to mention on ice practice as well. Once players reach the competitive level at about 12-13 years of age or even younger are on the road constantly, having to sacrifice holidays, weekends with friends, not being able to see family for months at a time. However, its what they signed for, they know what they're getting into. And hockey doesn't stop in the season either, there is always summer camps, tournaments and other hockey games going on throughout the summer. It's non stop for them, I'm not a parent by any means, but I know what my parents had to go through to get me to practices, on the road with me to watch my games, the late nights, the early mornings. All of it. So yes, hockey is a sport that you practice for years. There are many years where you celebrate your birthday when you're on the road. It's a lot of sacrifice, however, at the end it can be worth it to some people or maybe not to others.
In my 50 plus years of watching hockey I have never lost interest in the sport. Over the years baseball and football have faded to some extent for me but not hockey. The skill level now is much higher than ever and the game is played at a speed that at times still makes my jaw drop. When I played I was just average at best but loved being on that ice and having fun. When you move here hopefully you will get to watch hockey in person. Minor league and college hockey are amazing too. Just get to a game and you will become a Kiwi in love with the greatest game in the world!!

I'm from Mexico City, that's were I started playing since I was 6. There's 8 or 9 rinks there, not to mention the ones in other states. My fam and I moved to New Mexico a few years ago, we just got an NAHL team in Albuquerque and every time there's a game it gets packed so yup, you couldn't be more mistaken. I know New Zealand is a great distance from Canada, but now that you have seen the videos of the passion and grace of hockey, you do really need to witness a hockey game first hand. Only at that point you will see there is no sport like it.

I just got home from Las Vegas today when you come to the US I highly suggest going to a Vegas Golden Knights game. It’s one of the more expensive teams to see but you won’t be disappointed the arena is always loud the pregame has the typical Vegas flare and the fans are friendly and the team has amazing history even though they have been around for 3 years
As a player I can say that hockey takes a lot of skill, stamina, and thinking. I've played basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Hockey was the hardest to learn and play well.

You need to watch NHL player highlights. I would recommend the following - Connor McDavid Sidney Crosby Alex Ovechkin Patrick Kan Wayne Gretzky Mario Lemieux and there are so many more, but this is a good start.
It was amazing how many goals scored against Chicago were in that video. Probably because they were nationally televised so often during their cup runs.
Being from Florida, I've never gotten into hockey much. We don't get a lot of ice down here, so it's not really part of the culture, though we do have a couple teams in the state. Basically, I'm taking this particular journey with you. It really is quite impressive. And don't feel bad. I nearly cried at that last one too.
Hockey is the best sport. The Stanley Cup is the hardest championship to win. It's the best sport to see in person. It's very difficult to play. To be on skates and do what they do takes an incredible blend of athletic skill. According to many reporters, the players are generally some of the best people to be around.
Hockey technically isn't north american sports as it is popular in Europe too and was invented possibly in British isles (although Canada is where the modern version was developed)
You must get to see when E2-juniors (about 10 years old) are playing hockey. Every goals are like a "championship-goals and some of them are building that what you can see adults doing later on the ice.

its a great sport. I have played for 41 years and my 7 year old son has been playing for 3 years. It is an art on how to move and control the all aspects of the game.
Near the end of the video a player is shown carrying a large trophy, that trophy is the Stanley Cup and is awarded to the champions of the NHL. Unlike the other major North American sports leagues that present their trophies to the owners of the teams, the Stanley Cup is presented to the captain of the winning team who then carries it around the ice before passing it along to another teammate who then does the same until every member of the team has held it. Even the coaches generally will not hold the cup until all the players have. One other tradition is after a playoff series is over the two teams will line up at center ice and shake hands, no matter how hard fought or nasty the games between them have been.
The reason that they play is to hoist the Stanley Cup. This is the oldest trophy in professional sports. It was bought by Lord Stanley, who was the Governor General of Canada, for about $80 in 1884 as a trophy for the hockey champions in Canada. Attending a game in person is an absolute must. You will gain an even greater appreciation of the true nature of sport when you see the speed of the game live. My only piece of advice...don't sit right down by the ice. Sit about midway up. It gives you the opportunity to see more of the action.
That play where he puts the nose of the stick on the puck is when the guys leading the NHL proved they hate fun. The rule was that the player could not stop forward momentum during the shootout but they changed the wording to ban that particular move.
My family was from Wisconsin, so they were all hockey fans. I was the first one born in south Texas, by NO means a hockey area (very much a football culture), so I didn't really get it. I tried watching games on TV, but would lose interest pretty quickly. Then in the mid-90s, we got a lower-level minor league hockey team in my hometown. I started going to games...and that's when I realized how incredible it was. TV does NOT do this sport justice. Seeing games live is an amazing experience. Now my hometown has an AHL team (the highest level of minor league hockey league and very close to the NHL in competition). I absolutely LOVE going to games, but still don't really get into watching games on TV.
Hockey is a very beautiful and technical sport at the same time probably the roughest one. Btw, Love my Detroit Redwings the 3rd most winningnest hockey team in the history of the NHL and tied with the Maple Leafs for a brief time.

Now I might be a bit biased being a Washington Capitals fan but there is a video about their Stanley Cup run and it touches on the history of the 2000s and 2010s. One of the most dominant teams of any era yet were never able to get over the hump and be the championship team they were destined to be. Its an emotional video especially when they talk about TJ Oshies dad's struggle of Alzheimer's.

It’s not unusual for my family to just decide one morning to go to a St. Louis Blues game that same day (my mother is an absolute lunatic Blues fan) .... It’s about an 8 hour drive from where we live. So there’s definitely a pretty unique hockey culture
It's a sport that's purely passion. You can see it in the teams and the fans when they win the Stanley cup. I remember watching the parades in Chicago when we won the 3 we did recently. Just looking at pictures you could see how much the big cities love their teams
Baggataway was the biggest influence in the creation of Lacrosse. In Lacrosse "Cross checking" is permitted. Lacrosse was the sport most linked with hockey the new sport. In the first pro hockey league ever and still to this day "No cross checking" is a top 10 Rule in the once all new sport of Hockey.
You might want to check out women’s international hockey as well. It’s quite surprising . The two best teams Canada and the USA most often find themselves in the final match . A long standing rivalry. I’m 74 and my mother would never have imagine women playing hockey at this level.
