The ride along Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka is a cyclist’s and photographer’s dream. Many regard this route as one of the most beautiful roads in New Zealand. It passes long and narrow glacial lakes carved from prehistoric glaciers. In the background, you have the majestic New Zealand mountains. The ride starts in Hawea, a small town next to Lake Hawea. The ride offers many short climbs that are rewarded with stunning views of the lake and the mountains. Altogether you climb more than 500 meters / 1700 feet. As you leave Lake Hawea you cross a small piece of land called ‘The Neck’ to get to Lake Wanaka. Lake Wanaka is a favorite among Kiwis and no wonder. With Mount Aspiring National Park in the background, you feel like riding your bike in Lord of the Rings. As you leave the stunning lakes you ride into a beautiful valley with sheep grazing on the meadows. The last five kilometers are fairly easy and perfect as a cool-down. The ride ends at Makarora Country Cafe. The perfect place to 'fuel up' after an amazing ride.

Adding music to the ride:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is awesome. But when it comes to music opinions are very mixed. This is why we do not add music to our rides. We simply do not want to spoil your ride with music you do not like. But it is quite simple to add it yourself. Open an extra browser tab. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, RU-vid, etc…) and pick the music you like and enjoy the ride...

I lived in Tasmania for many years and seeing all the Pampas Grass growing in these NZ vids I was reminded when my wife and I bought a property in a small town and planted some Pampas in the front garden only to be told this was a sign we were Swingers.Never did find out if this was true thanks for bringing back the memory of a great time in our lives.

No worries Peter. Tasmania is a beautiful place too. It could be an interesting place to add to our route library ;-)

If you get the chance to cycle this route in real life then it is absolutely superb. Some nice small rolling hills and great views along the entire route, as in this video. Traffic tends to head towards the west coast in the morning (from Wanaka to Haast) and in the opposite direction in the afternoon. Fantastic cycle route !! Great video here too. Jerry

I really wanted to thank you because I hurt my back and shoulder several weeks ago and I haven't been able to ride an outdoor bike since. So, indoor cycling, but alone, it was very boring. Your Youtuble channel is great to feel better and better. THANK YOU ! 🚲🚴🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♂️🚵🏼‍♀️🚵🏼‍♂️💪🏼

Thank you Christiano, yeah we have done a lot of trials with high quality microphones to get the natural sound of the surroundings. But the natural sound of the surroundings is simply drowned by noise from passing cars, vibrations from the road, wind, and the rider's breathing. Thank you for your comment :-)

@@BiketheWorld thanks for your reply! I can only imagine how difficult it is to find equipment for this sort of use case. Even GoPros probably aren't perfect with that, right? Anyways, if you ask me, I'd much prefer the video with the not-so-good sound (because I can just mute it if I don't like it), than not having sound at all. Personally, I wouldn't mind some noises because it'd make me feel MUCH more immersed in the experience :) Thanks and keep it up the awesome work!
