We give envelopes of money at Maori Tangis. It's called a Koha and people (friends and family attending) can give what they want and it gets collected by a member of the Iwi or a whanau member and given to the family (whanau). The family will then give a Koha to the marae where the tangi was held. The Marae will provide the food, catering and normally host the entire event for 3 days typically but it can be longer or shorter depending, this really helps take pressure off of a grieving whanau. If someone dies and they are your Iwi or being honoured and held at your Iwis Marae, it is expected that you go and help wherever you can whether it be cooking, cleaning or dishes etc. It's a team effort and its a beautiful and amazing tradition.

I'm American and I've been on 2 cruises. But I have never tipped. It is all-inclusive and they already charged me for tips. I'm not paying again unless I had a special request that caused them extra work.

It's great to hear your latest adventures. I lived years in Wellington as a uni student, spending time in pubs and being invited to parties in houses up steep winding paths in Mt Victoria, Oriental Bay, Kelburn . . . often on rainy nights, trying to keep dry and feet out of puddles, with bottles of wine tucked under the arms. Your daughter will love it there.

I'm a Wellingtonian and I love your take on our city. My daughter's into the am-dram scene so I'll tell her to keep an eye open for Tess. As for the neighbours where Tess has moved in, they'll be genuine too. We had a flat next to us in our early days of marriage and when a couple moved in I told them to sing out if they needed anything and my husband (he was English) said "and she really means it" . I thought to myself "but of course". You seem to be able to focus on the little gems that are so typically Kiwi. You are made for RU-vid, thank you. By the way, a friend returned from England over the holidays and 2 days in was stricken by a virus that went to her brain and it was touch and go. She was in Wellington ICU for quite a while. She said she wouldn't be alive if it had happened before she left the UK. We have so much to be thankful for.

Hi L & B....what a couple of weeks you've had! As a Weĺlintonian myself I can assure you that your daughter is in a great city. I can only hope my kids move there and not some dodgy British city! When I finally get back and visit my Uncle in the town of Levin I'll be heading straight to The Star of India. When he moved there a few years ago from Raumati Beach we all thought he was mad but perhaps it was the Star of India that drew him there! Should I ever have the privilege of spotting you two in the Pak n Save..... I'll probably turn into a blithering idiot, embarrass myself and run out with my trolley resulting in me getting arrested for shoplifting ! Keep up the good work, Kent

Parts where there are nice homes etc can be found in every town. These areas are expensive but well worth the looking up and down the island for these pockets.I do love an english vibe as I am half a londoner and half maori.

Hi you lovely people, it’s torrential rain in an already sodden Auckland. Never felt the Te Aroha 5 quake at 202am …the earth didn’t move albeit was concerned for houses higher up in this undulating city. The sun umbrella giving us a sense of Summer😊 South Island sweltering ……I have dehumidifier on 💦 Where I reside inner city down the end of my street is a meandering creek which has quickly become a fast flowing river. Tess in Wellington -oh goodness all so grown up. I giggle when you quibble I laugh uproariously at Bri’s facial expression’s. Is Sonny still at home? My oldest daughter is moving to the UK for two years on an exchange programme for her work . It's never easy seeing our babies fly the nest and fly off into the big wide world. What a shame about that man, I can understand it as my Dad felt somewhat similar although not to that extent. I think he may need to take a step back from politics if it's effecting him that much as it sounds very unhealthy. Unfortunately many New Zealanders have not been happy with Jacintas lack of following through with her commitments and promises made, topped with her totalitarian style pandemic response, these things all contributed to her eventual demise and the labour party could not succeed another election with her running and she knew it (in my opinion of course 😉). I honestly would be voting national in the next election if she hadn't stepped down which would have been a first! I do think the trolls need to stop, but the trolls are on both sides of the camp, they don't just have their pitchforks out for Jacinta lol. I for one will not miss her as I feel that she came off very smug and condescending in many of her interviews which really rubbed me the wrong way. I really enjoy Mr Luxons interviews and I dont mind this new Mr Hicks but I'm not fond of the new tax cuts on gas, it seems like a short term solution to a long term problem that will cost NZ tax payers so much money... but I could be wrong 🤷. P.S don't be scared to get into a little politics now and then... We can all have different opinions and beliefs, share them and just respect one another's point of view. We are so lucky in NZ, we at least have some very capable leaders to chose from in NZ not like other countries that have to make a choice between one pile of dung and another pile of dung wrapped in a pretty bow (I won't name names it could trigger the trolls) 😅

Tipping for good service is as expected in Canada as it is in the US. So, it always surprises me when I hear Brits, Aussies and Kiwis so freaked out by tipping. I suspect the difference between the North American attitude towards it in comparison to other Anglosphere countries is that, here, serving staff aren't paid very much, so the bulk of their income depends on tips. It's an incentive for them to ensure the customer is satisfied. I'm not sure about NZ, but I've seen other RU-vidrs from the UK and Australia comment that wait staff there are paid quite handsomely and that, by comparison to North America, they're attentiveness to the customers' needs is sometimes lacking. I can't say I've experienced this myself, as I've never been outside North America.

The vast majority of them aren't Kiwis, and have never been to NZ, they seem to be far right types that just hate success of any sort, especially if it's because of a "lefty". I spend a bit of time on Quora and tend to ignore them, the trouble is the hateful types always stand out from the crowd.

I have a view of the river mouth from my place and spotted what I thought was a cruise ship the other day. Thanks for verifying it was one. Beautiful view off your deck. Good on your daughter. I hope her dreams come true. Big step at 18. Better Wellington than Auckland she is going to love it. It can be a bit windy. Great video. Always good for a laugh. Levin is a town. Last time I was in Dunedin I was shocked at all the tourists milling around, apparently there was two cruise ships in. I do agree that the majority of passengers spend very little in the local economy, and I really wonder if they're worth having, mainly because of the massive environmental impact these ships have. When you consider how far they've come just to get to NZ, it actually disgusts me. Great podcast again you two!

Sadly, the news media in NZ gets their International news coverage is from CNN/BBC which are politically biased, if only people watching that can do their own research to get the truth. Also sadly, for your viewers, where the Housing market is concerned - the closer people are to the 'Inner City' the higher the cost, sure the further out you go the cheaper it will be but the cost for travel will be a cause of irritation.

I felt the same way as your cafe guy- sick, and couldn't watch any media for days afterwards. I am aware of conspiracy theories, Q, far right, white supremacist, christian evangelical, the spiritual/wellness rhetoric in this country and felt like the campaign of hatred, misogyny and violence against Jacinda had won. It broke my heart.

I'm glad tipping is voluntary and not expected here. Tipping culture creates an unhealthy expectation - I thought it had to do with excellent service but it looks like - you just tip no matter what. It seems pressured and unrealistic.
