Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is one of three major airports in the NYC Metropolitan Area. I take the train from the airport to Midtown Manhattan via the NJ Transit and AirTrain Newark Monorail. This is the most recommended method of public transportation from the airport to Midtown Manhattan as it is usually quite fast. However, I encounter major delays with the monorail. The aging monorail opened in 1996 and has reached its 25 years end of life in 2021. According to Wikipedia, there are frequent delays and breakdowns with the monorail. The total fare for an adult ticket is $15.25 and is cheaper than taking a car service for one person.

Air travel has felt like riding the bus for a long while now with delays of all types; weather, mechanical, (air) traffic volumes, baggage issues, etc., extreme heat can also affect the rails, pack your patience along with your carry on luggage. Glad that worked out eventually. NJ Transit trains are usually on time. The unknown was that airport air train! The bus could be unpredictable sometimes too with the traffic into the Lincoln Tunnel. I would probably do a google map traffic look beforehand and if traffic not bad I would take the bus otherwise the train is usually more predictable. I bet you must be a software developer or application Q/A tester, AK because you like to find & discover the flowchart for traffic in/out of a destination!
@ActionKid
@ActionKid 2 года назад
From what I read, the AirTrain is frequently subject to delays since its reached its End of Life. It seriously needs an overhaul! There's pros and cons to each method, and I would probably choose the Newark Airport Express bus direct to Manhattan if the traffic is light. Plus, there's no need to carry your luggage on multiple elevators/stairs and on two different rail systems by taking the Express Bus.

What a positively frustrating commute experience, especially for all of the money you paid. You spent more time waiting than you did actually getting anywhere. If this is the lowest cost option it just shows you what manner of consideration is given to travelers with more modest incomes.
@ActionKid
@ActionKid 2 года назад
Yes, it can be quite frustrating! The lowest cost option is to have a buddy pick you up for free! Other than that, it's taking the NJ Transit 62 bus for $1.60 to Newark Penn Station, then transferring to the PATH train for $2.75. It comes out to a total of $4.35. Getting on the 62 bus can be quite cramped though and I would imagine not much more room for luggage.

Nah mate, after watching the whole video and seen all the intricacies involved, it's as good of an option and equivalent to JFK's 'Air Train+Long Island Rail Road' combo to Penn Station, and probably worth saving $5 compared to Newark Airport Express: -Air Train ride + transfer to rail-road to reach NYC Penn Station in about 1 hour (if you discount the 15 min you spent back and forth at the airport plus up to 15 min of waiting time at the rail station, which can be much shorter depending on when you arrive) The main pitfall was really the back-and-forth between Air Train's Terminal C and P4 station for those that don't get at first time that they need to make an Air Train transfer at P4.

It's really not complicated, watch again the video, and you'll realize that it took extra time just because he didn't get out and wait for the proper Air Train transfer at P4, so he went backwards to terminal C again. Can happen to first timers that didn't watch this video though, but if you watched the whole video, then it's very straight forward and a good option to get to Manhattan imho

I go to New York often and Newark is my go to airport. Not as busy as JFK or LaGuardia. Easy access to the NJ transit. I always stay in midtown so Penn Station is 3 blocks from my hotel.

Newark is far busier than LaGuardia is. You don't feel it because EWR is a far larger and more organized airport (and the best one in the NYC IMO).

Anyone know, how long is the entire trip from Newark Airport to Penn Station? It says 30 minutes when I search.

Wow -- that was painful! There are plans to build a new AirTrain and demolish the current one because it has so many problems. “The existing AirTrain Newark has outlived its useful life and is desperately in need of replacement,” said Port Authority chairman Kevin O’Toole in May 2021. It will run to the new terminal that they're also building.

I thought I was watching actionkid’s version of the movie terminal lol this is unscripted reality that may happen to tourists

Considering how busy the terminal & airtrain were this platform is creepily deserted. Despite all the confusion I think you were unlucky on the day & it's still better than the bus which would be caught up in traffic & not so "express"

Actually the best way is the Newark Airport Express outside. The bus takes you from each terminal to Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan then to Grand Central station like you said for 18.00 dollars.

Either way, you can get caught in traffic as well taking using the bus.

I see you use a DJI Pocket 2. Also I see the JFK airtrain are a lot nicer than the EWR air train.

I liked the train option. I think you were too quick to judge. You kept saying $19.50 for the cost to go back the same way you came, that's the one-way fare. If I remember correctly, you could have bought the round-trip at $30 +$2.50, making your trips $16.25 each way, making the difference about $1. It really depends on where you prefer your terminus.

Sometimes taking the the 62 bus to and from the airport, especially during "rush hour", can be unpleasant at times bcuz of cramped passengers.

I saw the 62 bus in person at the bus stop. The aisle is narrow, people are cramming into the bus, and I would imagine there's not much more room for luggage. It also takes a slow route through the streets of Downtown Newark, adding even more time to get to Newark Penn Station.

@@ActionKid The 62 bus is just a regular city bus, not designed for luggage, only to pick up and get off. The downfall of that bus and the GO 28 bus , at certain times of the day, it can get hectic, but it only takes fifteen minutes to get downtown Newark and they both run consistently. I forgot, there is also the #67, looks like a tour bus, that leaves from Newark Penn Station to Tom's River (central Jersey) and stop at all the terminals, but doesn't run consistent as the other two. I used to take that bus when I worked for TSA, very few passengers use it, at least going to the airport avoid the crowd. 😁

You should do JFK to Midtown via The LIRR.

Newark Penn Station: Grey day. Spooky, squeeky sign. Empty station. Seemingly every train speeds past without stopping. Nothing feels sketchy or odd about this at all. Nuh uh. Nope.

That monorail is really bad. The same thing happened to me coming from the Airpot car rental on the monorail. rRandom delay withe no explanation. The people working there couldn’t care less. I would never trust that monorail if I had an outbound flight. Better to take the express bus or pony up for an Uber.
