I’d be surprised if you don’t get as much joy from mapping these expansions and transit-technology evolutions as we do from watching your videos. For me, they transcend their value as pure, kinetic pop art: they’re also essential city planning primers.

The original plans for the PATH were to extend it the IRT Lexington Avenue Line at Astor Place to provide a one-seat ride to the east side. It would've been great for NJers who work there. Sadly it was scrapped
@jerrygennaro7587
@jerrygennaro7587 3 года назад
True. The turnout is still visible at the north end of the 9th st. Station. Another well documented plan (never executed) was the extension of the H&M uptown line from 33rd st. to Grand Central Terminal. Unfortunately, that route was effectively blocked off when the NYC 6th Ave. Subway was built. This limits the utility of the system now known as PATH which cannot be extended beyond its current terminal at 32nd st even though it continues to be called 33rd st.

@@jerrygennaro7587 not directly part of your comment. But the cost of building the 6th Avenue line lead to the delay of building the second Avenue Line. There is nothing really spectacular about the 6th Avenue line except that West 4th Street connection with the 8th Avenue Line. We already had the Westside IRT and the more superior connected BMT Broadway Line. And on top of that we have the #7 and shuttle for connections to the Eastside. And extended path to at least 57th 6th Avenue Street or Grand Central would have been a game changer without costing much more money. The path uses much smaller cars than today's BMT and IND. And my cousin pointed out that the cars are shorter than the IRT making for even more reduce construction costs How New York City Residence using the system would be up for debate because of the size limitation. But I'm sure with what would be available (7th Avenue and Broadway BMT/IRT) that it wouldn't be such a problem. The 6th Avenue in it currently form does handle a lot of traffic, so it would be somewhat difficult without it, how people would cope had it not been built. But we will have had a full service 2nd Avenue subway instead. And it would have still worked if south of West 4th Street was included in the plans. But managing all this additional train traffic might have been more problematic. However, some of this traffic would have been diverted from 8th into 2nd Avenue anyway. The grand course line could have ran to either 2nd Avenue or 8th Avenue. And the F could have become an express on second avenue with the V now M local. I can't imagine the crazy overcrowding at that 59th Street local station on the IRT. Unless the IND put into their plans of a 57th Street Crosstown instead of the stupid half witted idea to make it 53rd Street, which defeats most transfers possibilities. Look how long it took them to connect Lexington Avenue with the IND? And that Port Authority connection to Times Square is a recent transfer of the 1990s.

As someone who lived in Jersey City for a few years, I've frequented the HBLR and PATH to travel within NJ or to NYC. It really is a great and effective system. When you see all these public transport options in Jersey City, it's no wonder why the majority of residents still prefer to take public transit over car That being said, it is obvious you didn't mention that the Hudson-Bergen light rail serves more than just Jersey City and Hoboken. Bayonne (45th Street to 8th), Weehawken (Port Imperial and Lincoln Harbor), Union City (Bergenline Ave), and North Bergen (Tonnelle Ave) are all served by the light rail as well. So really it serves a lot more places than you think. Also, the PATH is less of a NJ subway and more of a subway that's co-owned between the NJ and NY governments (since it's owned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ). Similar to the PATCO Speedline and how it's co-owned by the PA and NJ governments. Another thing is the line from Hoboken to Tonnelle doesn't run full-time, it only runs on weekdays

An excellent presentation of the development of a mass transit system that I've used, but never knew how extensive it was. I rode the Newark city subway many times as a kid with my mother when she would go downtown shopping at the department stores. The station was actually on N 5th st. You had to see Newark in the 50's. Downtown was so crowded then. They estimated that on any given day there would be a million people living, working and shopping there. And, I miss the old subway cars. They looked like the old busses, only on tracks.

Having worked on portions of the PATH network as a consultant, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the system, yet I learned some things! Fun Fact: The commonly renamed Erie > Pavonia > Pavonia/Newport > Newport Station has columns on its platform and lower mezzanine levels that bear an 'E' at the top for when it was named Erie Station 60 years ago.

In the years to come, new extensions and stations are set to be opened. PATH is constructing a one stop extension to Newark Liberty International Airport Station. I just wanted to point out but there is an extension on the West Side Ave branch one stop to route 440. As for PATH there is a big debate on extending it from Newark Penn to Newark Airport
@RobertWilke

I thought PATH to EWR was a done deal. The Northen extension has been a long time coming. It would help with the upper Hudson-Lower Bergen county area. Actually the path they are going to use is there already. Back in the late 1800's it ran from Jersey City well up into Upper Bergen County. The stations are still there. One of them is in heart of Tenafly but of course not in use. It would be smart if they could fully extend that old line. Many of those towns in that area of the county have no direct access to a major highway. You can get to them but you are going down many 1-2 lane roads not meant for high traffic.

So many neighborhoods and towns lost vital transit connections. So many areas lost access to public transit when the els and trams were torn down to make way for parkways and highways. Many were replaced by bus routes but they are noway as good as rail lines.

Re - Harrison... There was one Harrison station that served the H&M when it went to Park Place and a different Harrison further south along the Pennsylvania Right-of-way when it was re-routed to Newark Penn Station. I have verified this by consulting the old Sanborn Maps of Newark and Harrison.
@FadkinsDiet
@FadkinsDiet Год назад
The post-9/11 water damage at Exchange Place was easy to repair. The bigger issue that prevented re-opening of the station was that there was no way to turn trains around to go back west. The additional work was digging out some new tunnels and laying tracks and switches so that trains could turn around and go back to Newark or Hoboken without interfering with other train traffic.

Just to the north of Hoboken In the upper Hudson county area there was an extensive trolly car system that ran through 5 of these towns (North Bergen, Union City, West New York, Guttenberg and Weehawken.) It to was run by Public Service just like the ones in JC and Newark. My Great Grand Father was an inspector for the line. He'd have his pocket watch and time the trolly's to make sure they were on schedule. It too fell to the scrapping of the line in favor of buses. It's a mistake we are all still being affected by.
@Jeff-uj8xi
@Jeff-uj8xi Год назад
But you've got to understand that the management of Public Service Coordinated Transport was "bought and paid for" by the diesel bus vultures at General Motors. They destroyed the entire statewide network of trolleys and trolley coaches. They even tried to put buses in the Newark City Subway, but the City of Newark forbid it. So they were forced to buy the 30 used PCC cars from Minneapolis in 1953. The Newark City Subway was a subway/surface system with lines that branched out to places like Bloomfield, Orange, West Orange, etc. Public Service destroyed those branches and just retained the subway portion. They should have bought enough PCC cars to run the branches of the entire Newark subway/surface network. Anybody else would have, but they were being bribed by GM with new Cadillacs every year, GM dealerships and cash..They did what was in their best interest.

For Newark City Subway, the consolidation of Heller Parkway and Branch Brook stops (and extension to grove) is tied to system updates. Up until then, the #7 still ran PCCs, on trolley wire & trolley poles, with vehicle shop & storage under Penn Station and a very tight track loop at Branch Brook. The LRVs were much bigger, couldn't make that loop, and took up more storage space. A new shop & yards facility was built at Grove St. They took pains to keep the #7 active as much as possible during the conversion. They upgraded the power supply to be ready for the new vehicles, and different overhead catenary - so they actually temporarily installed pantographs on the PCCs to work on the upgraded line until the LRVs were ready. #7 NCS had lasted as long as it had (when all other Newark streetcars had converted to bus) because it was mostly tunnel or separate right-of-way - only one grade-crossing. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, on the other hand, was a mix of underused & unused freight and passenger heavy rail track and street service on streets that either had never had streetcars or had had no vestige of them in at least 40-50 years.
@Jeff-uj8xi
@Jeff-uj8xi Год назад
You didn't mention that Public Service bought 30 second hand PCC cars from the Twin City Rapid Transit in Minneapolis in 1953. Eleven of those ex-Newark PCC cars are now running in San Francisco. One is running in San Diego. One is in a museum in Minneapolis and others are in trolley museums in Baltimore, Connecticut, Maine, etc.

Stayed off the corner of I-80 & the Parkway when I visited NYC last spring. Scratching the surface, PATH was very far superior compared to NYC’s MTA. Yes, the latter had a far bigger network, but things were… cleaner & consistent with PATH when literally every other MTA train was completely different from one another. One was brand spanking new, another was older, and another only had the audio station announcements with absolutely no screens/message boards displaying even the next station. Don’t even get me started with the less mainstream stations even around the middle West side part of Manhattan… Walking between Newport and either their mall two blocks down or the parking garage mere feet from the station, I was stunned to realize PATH wasn’t the only real transit operation in North Jersey.

I even knew the temporary station after ... you know. Especially the old cars (PA-4 if i am right) were very beautiful and nice to travel on. Anyway, i always wondered why it is so small. It has potential: clean, safe, fast and punctual. Not like NYCs Subway. I would have extended it to Newarks Airport and into the City Subway tunnel long ago to be honest.

I think NYC Subway and Commuter Railroad will be a video from hell. So much has happened in the past 100+ years of the NYC Subway, LIRR, and Metro-North that if "Vanishing Underground" made a video, it would have to be in parts. But, I am hoping for whenever those videos come out, they will be great!!!!!

This covers many more municipalities than Newark and Jersey City. NYC, Hoboken, and Harrison were named but not Bayonne, Weehawken, Union City, or North Bergen. Maybe Newark and Hudson County would have been a better name. (Though that still leaves out poor North Bergen)

Very well done!!! Growing up in Bergen County I also studied the original lines, though not the Hoboken El. I last rode the 7-City Subway line shortly before the PCC cars were retired around 2000-2001. Some day the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line might be extended north to Tenafly NJ along the old Erie Northern Branch thru Bergen County; they've been talking about that for decades!! Prior to the light rail using the Weehawken tunnel, it was used by Penn Central, before that the NY Central. In the early 1970's, an Aunt lived up on the cliff over looking the massive PC Freight Yard that is now Port Imperial. I spent quite a few hours watching watching trains being switched there in the Hump Yard. Back then and before, Edgewater looked nothing like it does today. There were railroads everywhere, especially to/from the abandoned Ford and Alcoa plants. River Road was 1 lane in each direction and everything along the Hudson was industrial property.

Removal of the Hoboken Elevated and closure of the Cedar Street tunnel really deprived the thickly settled cities directly opposite of Manhattan of a potential Skytrain or two branches of the Path Service. Pennywise and pound foolish combined with postwar Americans' lustful passion for the automobile and their racist, classist passions to get out of the cities!
@lngvly22
@lngvly22 3 года назад
Racist? Classist? Most cities (especially New York) were very dangerous in the late 20th century. The only “passion” was not getting murdered! I don’t think if you’re being mugged you really care about the race or economic background of the mugger…

I used to ride PATH often. Zack's chronology is partly automated, limiting how informative it is. The voice, which tries to mask the monotonous automation, can get annoying. Generally, I support expanding mass transit systems especially in the U.S.

Doubtful and very short-sighted. I have heard, but not verified, that wheel flange and rail profiles on the rolling stock of the two systems are different. If true, can’t understand why that was done. Railway right-of-way might still exist between JC and Newark’s Ironbound section which are communities with established commercial connections.
