I've recently become interested in rocks, gems and minerals. Living on Vancouver Island provides me with access to many beaches, rivers and lakes. In this video, I look for agates in Nanaimo, however, I find mostly quartz. As a beginner, rockhounding is easy, but identifying the rocks is very difficult. I have a couple of rock identification books, but I am still not able to tell the difference between many types of rocks. For any experienced geologists or rockhounds, if you know the type of rocks in this video, I would love your expert comments. Enjoy!

Awesome, bring along a spray bottle next time. You'll really see the rock's true colors!! You have some good finds. Hard to tell just from color though. Usually anything shiny, slippery, smooth, waxy or greasy is coming home. Calcite which is like sugary texture can be nice too but is too soft for making stuff. Quartz is chunky crystals that are clearly defined and semi opaque to transparent. Purple it is called Amethyst, and brownish is Smokey Quartz, Blue is Sapphire, Green is Emerald. Microcrystaline quartz: the crystals are too small to see and if clear like glass is called Chalcedony ( maybe has some light blue hue), it's called Jasper (if it's opaque, every color), Agate (translucent with bands) and Carnelian (Translucent Red, orange) and yellow is called citrine. If its White like snow with green blotches it tree or moss agate. But it's technically all quartz. Jade, Turquoise, Ruby, Garnets are a whole other thing. Maybe that can get ya started on a path! Rock on!

Thank you so much for these tips! I just bought a local rock identification guide, so I'm hoping it will help. I will definitely bring a water bottle the next time.

Neat finds!! Looks like there's a few pieces of possible Dallasite and some cool quartz formations!! The piece at 10:27 looks like a quartz and calcite vein to me just by how soft it is in the center. Thanks for sharing the adventure🙂

@@LiquidFogCreations No problem!! When I first started rockhounding I joined a group on Facebook called BC Rockhunters, I'm not sure if you've heard of it but if not I'd definitely check it out!! There's lots of people there to help you out with identifications or even to find new spots🙂

Hey Melissa! I love the way you put together this video adventure! You found some nice pieces. There were 2 or 3 I would have kept, especially that first large piece you found! Maybe you already have a big collection of certain ones? I’ve heard your kitchen/dining table is full of rocks! lol 😂 Love you! Auntie Anne 😘❤️

Neck Pt is a beautiful place! I’m pretty sure the “quartz seam” at 6:30 is agate! And the beauty with white quartz, purples and greens at 8:00 would have come home with me!

Thanks, Moira. I almost took that rock home at 8:00 ... I think it was dallasite - and I have a lot of that at home. I'm sure someone else will love it when they find it.

Hey Melissa! I love the way you put together your video adventure - you’re so talented in everything you do! You found some great little pieces! Maybe you already have too many, but I would have kept a few that you discarded, especially the big, green one near the beginning! 😁 I hear that your kitchen/dining table is full of rocks! lol 😆 Keep it up; I’m sure it’s cathartic for you. XO Auntie Anne 😘❤️

Thanks so much. I'm tumbling some rocks now and hope to do some wire wrapping if any of them turn out okay.

I don't think it was a hag stone... maybe I'm wrong, but the hole didn't go all the way through. haha.
