My dad and mum were in this earthquake when they were my age (13). My dad said he was home alone while the earthquake hit. I would have been petrified. :(
I was about 12 years old on this day. In Moorebank Sydeny, my dad digging to put new posts in for the pergola. The guy from next door came out upset saying you've just wrecked my house the whole house was shaking. 2 minutes later the earthquake news came over the radio.
I was reading the Newcastle Herald in my parents lounge room when the quake struck, my mum screamed, we had minor damage happen to the house, we got word that people had lost their lives, everyone was shocked & saddened, Newcastle was never the same after that.
It's interesting that the reporter doesn't actually know if it was an explosion or earthquake in the immediate aftermath. To anyone who's never experienced an earthquake this may seem odd. Having experienced an earthquake of similar magnitude in the UK which began with a very loud bang it is a perfectly reasonable assumption it could be an explosion, especially in this instance with the very extensive damage to buildings.
I was in Maitland at the time I was only a young girl I was with my father and grandmother SHOPPING in Greenhills when the supermarket starting shaking violently my father just picked by my shirt and got me out of there very quick
Poor Chris ,he was delivering meat trays at the club when it happened ,he was the one yelling to people and telling them it was an earthquake,he only new this because he experienced and earthquake for the first time in his life 3 months prior to this in Cyprus while on holidays
To Newcastle? On average we have them here about every 60yrs. That earthquake was 34 years ago. Oh, and no one really mentions the 5.4 Ellalong earthquake of 1994. If gou were looking for geological stability you picked the wrong place! But the lifestyle here is great!
