Newcastle to Scarborough with Transpennine Express Nova 1 and Nova 3

I wanted to try out Transpennine Express as I'd not used their trains since they'd taken delivery of their new "Nova" series.
So I decided that I could try out the Nova 1 from Newcastle to York, and then hop over to Scarborough on the Nova 3. Not only that, it meant I could take in two of the greatest stations in the UK and also get to sit on the longest bench! Oh, and there'd be time for a couple of pints at the York Tap aswell.

Cost: £6.00 / €7.10 advance adult standard class single with 1/3 railcard discount

Just watched this again--- its along time between Fridays-----. Must be among my favourites: it meets all my demands and my prejudices. Some glorious stations and a commentary to fit the images. its a strength of this channel. It wasn't this video but somewhere you said to a train "I don't care if I never see you again!". Perfect.

Excellent video. Very happy to have discovered your channel. I like the time spent in stations. Have spent happy hours in Newcastle Central going nowhere. Three dispatchers to see off one train, performing a sort of dispatcher ballet. Screech is caused, I guess, by the severity of the curve. Memorable experiences!

Thank you for saying so. I felt that whilst I love many other trip reporters, I would make room to spend slightly more time on the stations. I too like to just watch the trains and drink in the surroundings, and it also helps at York when you can also drink the beer!

Yes. It is a wonderful place. My daughter lives in York so I pass through quite often. York itself is also worth a visit as it has a lot of history 👍

Northbound Lumo services use the avoiding line while southbound services pass through the station.

Lumo north use avoid as it’s same side of line of south’s used it would have to cross all likes and block the whole ECML

Yes indeed. I really got that wrong. As you say, this was a southbound service and so it would have to go through the station. My mistake 🙋‍♂️

That is really a long bench. The TPE trains do look good compared to the local services in the North West

Yes indeed, as bench tourism goes, it is a major highlight! I'm not expecting a change of livery now the TPE franchise has been kicked out. I don't think the complaints were ever about the rolling stock, rather that it just never turned up! Thanks for watching 👍

Were there any catering options on either train either paid or included?

As I recall there was a trolley service in the standard class journey from Newcastle to York. However, York-Scarborough, I don't think there was anything (paid or otherwise). I have a terrible memory, so I checked some of my raw video from when I walked through the train and there was not one paper tea/coffee cup in evidence on anybody's table as I walked through. So therefore, I think my memory is probably right this time.

In a previous life, I worked for TPE on the old trolley and on a standard roster, trolley catering services didn't operate beyond York towards Scarborough or Middlesborough. This was around 10 years ago now mind, back when it was 185s, in their "as delivered" condition. Some things may have changed by now.

Why can’t you do a one. Journey. with a portion in first like say a scarbados to london where the tpx part is not worth first but LNER is

You ask which livery we prefer. I know many people love the TPE livery, but I'm afraid I can't look at its geometric shiny shapes without seeing a cheap blouse in some nasty synthetic fibre for a woman of a certain age! Aplologies to those who love it. And to mature ladies who are proud of their blouses.

Do you have to exit the station to access the Royal Station Hotel or is there an entrance to it inside the station?

I suspect you have to exit the station because you'd need to go through the ticket barriers. But it is only about 100m down Neville St to the main entrance of the hotel so you should be OK (even if its raining!). Do let me know if you find an entrance directly from the station when you've visited.

I think I must say "no" to this request as I think it will clutter the screen with more than the viewer needs. Longer trips I tend to round up/down anyway, as it is just a guide really. Sorry to disappoint 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for watching another though 👍
