This was the first football match i watched in my life. Even though i am Greek i don't support any Greek teams but i m a Newcastle fan. I was nearly 10 years old then and thought i was watching the world's best team. Always wanted to visit Newcastle and St James's Park and i managed to do so and watch a PL match in 2011. Newcastle- Everton 2-1. One of the best moments of my life.
the moment when Alan sherear here it was like a gladiator at st James park many best moment for some players like dinola :Duncan ferguson:asprillia: nobelto solano:Michael owen
It was NOT greatest peice of commentary, it was bias ManUnt fans-comentators DISBELIEVE of what is happening...I remind you they commented IN PURE ARROGANT SURENESS at the first goal "well I DON"T thik it's over...oh dear it is...". The 90's story in one game: Man Unt were THE CHEATERS of the league, getting always the most out of refs (faouls...cards...penalties...you name it) and when the ref was not in a "good day" to support those Sir Chewing Gum divers, they were always down 3-4-5 nill E A S Y...
I remember listening to BBC Radio 5 live during this match. They were covering a different match but kept going back to the reporter at St James' for every goal. Every time the man said 'and there been another goal at St James's Park' I thought man utd were surely mounting a comeback, but it was our day. That was such a special team put together by king kev. a great day to be a magpie.
One of the BEST days of my life!! ( I was 18 ) Regardless, that we ultimately didn't win a trophy. Performances and memories like these last a lifetime!
Anyone remember the jokes which followed? What time is it, five past Schmeichel. Schmeichel's wife called him afterwards and asked, "I know your upset but could you be home before six?" Also this was the start of a really bad run by Man United, after this they lost 6-3 to Southampton, 2-1 to Chelsea 1-0 to Juventus and 1-0 to Fenerbahce. Crazy stuff.
I think he had the last laugh though. By the time Peter Schmeichel retired, I'm pretty sure he'd won more trophies than Newcastle had in their entire history.
You can hear after the Peacock header that he was adamant it shouldn't have been given. Typical Jock b45tard, sticking up for his porridge-munching pi55head pal. Gray was a useless w4nker as a player, both at Villa & Wolves, only grabbing a fluked winner in the 1980 League Cup final. He only won games with Everton cos Howard Kendall assembled a phenomenal team and Sharpe scored most of the goals or did the hard work. Anyone can look good when you had Kevin Ratcliffe, Peter Reid and Paul Bracewell playing at their pinnacle of their careers!!
Absolutely Majestic, probably the greatest game I've ever seen. Newcastle had some team then,if only we could have held them together. We had David Batty and Rob Lee in the middle, and out attacking we had Peter Beardsley, David Ginola,Les Ferdinand and thee Alan Shearer. If only Keegan had have brought in two world class defenders,we would have won the League a few times and the Champions League, aswell as a couple of league cups and FA Cups. We had a brilliant midfield, David Batty,a proper Defensive Midfielder, for England aswell, and Rob Lee,who could bring the ball out for the forwards, and up in attack it was magic,we had Peter Beardsley, David Ginola,Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, plus Tino Asprilla on the bench. If we had of got say Jap Stam and Paolo Maldini,we would have smashed the premier League, and took on the best in Europe. Imagine if Pep Gaudiolla was manager of that lot. We would still be champions now. The Entertainers.
Saint James Park has a really special atmosphere. In those days i wasn't specially fascinated by the premier league neither watched it that much( I didn't even understand English and was more Serie A or la Liga Guy) but the crowd, the cheers and the noise in Saint James Park really amazed me.
Imagine someone told you then that over a quarter of a century later Newcastle would still have no more trophies than they did then. (Top level I mean, I'm not counting winning the division below as they were PL contenders here). ManUtd have won 10 PremierLeague titles since this game, 3 FAcups, 2 ChampionsLeague's (both won in invincible style), a EuropaLeague, 4 LeagueCups, an IntercontinentalCup, a ClubWorldCup, 8 Charity/CommunityShields and got to 2 otherChampionsLeague finals where they were undefeated until meeting Barca in both finals. Furthest Newcastle got in the ChampionsLeague was Last16 and they lost 6 CL games that campaign. Newcastle haven't even been FAcup runners-up as many times as ManUtd since this game. ManUtd have also been PL runners-up 5 more times than Newcastle since this game (Newcastle 97, ManUtd 98, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2018 & 2021) and they've been LeagueCup runners-up 2003 & EuropaLeague runners-up 2021 where as Newcastle haven't managed to get to a final in either competition.
After goal number 3 commentator says "Stanley Martin's (SP) at his best couldn't do that" when referring to Shearer's cross to Ferdinand... Does he say Stanley Martins or some other name? Thanks
Don't support either team, but that was a fantastic Newcastle performance. Problem for them was Man Utd were more consistent and could win games even if they weren't at their best. If Newcastle could have got that, and had SAF as manager instead of Keegan, they would have been champions
Even now,I have to ask.was it Philippe Albert's birthday on this day? cos at 4.13, Peter Schmeichel surely had gifted him that goal. If not, what was a goalkeeper of His standard doing That far of His goalline??
Show us your club's bank balance, spending power in the transfer market, the investment plan both within Old Trafford itself (it's dropping to pieces and rat infested), what you have spent on players and the returns from both Maguire & the buck toothed ladyboy!! Now you're supporters are where we were about 5yrs ago, organising protests about your owners , while the rest of the club football community are generally ambivalent. You'll know how it feels when the opposing fans tell you that you should be grateful and not deluded..... When this club start winning medals, United's Ferguson era will be as irrelevant as Tottenham's last League and Cup double... About as convincing as the Champions League victories in stoppage time and from a fluffed penalty kick..... Yesterday's club 👋
Newcastle's only bit of History beating Manchester United 5-0 Embarrassing is all I can say 2 that🙈Manchester United went on 2 win the title that season & had something 2 show 4 it at the end of a season
