This video shows how to service one of the earliest and largest of the Newell reels. It was manufactured in the 1980s. This service includes a full rebuild. I show how to remove and replace the bearings and drag washers as part of the service.
I have been servicing #fishing #reels for over 25 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe to see more on fishing #reel repair and service

That reel is a beast. Newell reels have a cult following in southern California. The older guys in the tackle shops swear by them.

Same here on the east coast. They remain popular anywhere they were used.

Carl Newell was a great guy, an innovator, and initially a plastics engineer out of Glendale, California. He was an avid saltwater fisherman all of his life, either on the day boats as a kid, or a blue water "long ranger", as an adult. His innovations (all stainless gears/graphite parts and frame/lightweight complete reels, as well as kits made for Penn reels) were genius for their time, along with Accurate's and Tiburon's aluminum frames and other parts, that could be used to improve Penn as well as Newell reels. Thus, nothing casts like a well kept, light Newell reel!!!! A little light these days for the larger fish, but the Newell 533 5.5 was favored by wahoo fishermen for a couple of decades. (Most replaced the graphite handle and may have used an Accurate or Tiburon frame, to strengthen the reel, for long-range use.) I still have all my Newells, and I don't want to give them up, for I still use them for lighter saltwater needs. Best casting jig stick reel ever!!!

Nice job cleaning, that reel will be ready for another chapter in its long life. Hard to find a decent deal on these, still desired.

You got that right! These reels are selling for around $250-$300 regularly, for a 40 year old reel that can compete with the best of today's reels

That's happened to me before, I put the reel back together the same way I took it apart only to discover it had previously been put back together wrong. The schematic is great , but I have found it to just be one tool in the arsenal to be used in conjunction with pictures to help figure things out.

Nice oldie but goodie, would have liked to see how you removed the broken shaft screw that broke in the beginning of the video, I think it would be helpful.

I used a needle nosed pliers after soaking the stud that remained in the frame. Fortunately, I had enough left on it to simply twist it out and I did not need to drill or retap

These Newell reels are extraordinary. I’ve neither owned or used one but their reputation is impeccable to say the least. Great video Dennis - Chris PS. You’re overusing a paper towel again. LOL
