#Newfoundland Halloween History
In Newfoundland, Halloween has long been shaped by a mix of old-world traditions and modern North American customs. One of the most notable early traditions was #Mummers Night, a Newfoundland specific practice that saw people dressing up in quirky costumes and going door-to-door, performing songs or skits in exchange for food or treats. This custom has its roots in English and Irish traditions, blending into Newfoundland’s unique culture.
As time went on, Newfoundland began embracing more familiar Halloween customs like trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and costume parties by the mid-20th century. However, Newfoundland's folklore, closely tied to the sea and rugged landscapes, continues to play a role in its Halloween celebrations. Tales of ghost ships are particularly famous. Fishermen would sometimes report sightings of phantom vessels shrouded in mist, disappearing into the fog, believed to be omens of bad weather or misfortune.
One other distinctive Halloween tradition in Newfoundland is the lighting of bonfires. Bonfires were once lit in rural communities to ward off evil spirits and were a way for families and neighbors to gather. These Halloween bonfires were both a celebration and a means of protection from the unknown, especially in the more remote parts of the island.

1. Activate the Yeast: Mix the warm water and sugar in a bowl. Add the yeast and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and oil, stirring until the dough forms.
3. Knead: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
4. First Rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
5. Prepare the Dutch Oven: Lightly grease your 10-inch Dutch oven or line it with parchment paper.
6. Shape the Dough: Punch the dough down and shape it into a round loaf. Place it in the Dutch oven.
7. Second Rise: Let the dough rise again in the Dutch oven for 30 minutes to 1 hour, covered with the lid.
8. Bake: Place the Dutch oven over coals, using 4-5 coals on the bottom and 12-15 on top. Bake for 30-40 minutes, rotating the Dutch oven and lid every 10 minutes.
9. Check for Doneness: The bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom and has a golden-brown crust.
