A recent example is Christian Petracca. Another one who nearly died on the field pretending he wasn't hurt, because Aussies. Anyone who doesn't get it, or our sports, needs to look at Australian war history. Long Tan, Sandakan, Kokoda, El Alamein, Scrap Iron Flotilla, Fromelles, Gallipoli. Death is better than dishonour, and faking an injury for a free kick would probably see you getting punched by your own team mates. Our war heroes are people like Teddy Sheehan, not our REMFs. Not that most of our generals were REMFS, eg Major General William Throsby Bridges who died at Gallipoli from a sniper's bullet.

Canadian expat here in Australia living in Adelaide in South Australia since the mid 1960s. When I came to Australia, there was no ice hockey to speak of, being a large, dry and at times very hot continent. I lived in Port Adelaide, and they had an Aussie rules team, called Port Adelaide Magpies. This team had a fearsome reputation in the state wide league. So being a fast, hard contact sport, I becamea fan. Port Adelaide now has a national team in the AFL. I am a member of the Port Adelaide Football Club. And yesterday I was at the Adelaide Oval with my adult sons and my young grandsons, to watch my team take on their arch rivals, the Adelaide Crows. Happy to say Port Adelaide Football Club won the match in what was a hard, long and at times brutal football game. I am a happy man.

Hi Kevin. Just noticed at 11:20ish you asked what teams we root for. In Australian English when "root" is used as a verb it has a completely different meaning. You asked Australians what team they (4 letter word beginning with F) for. I haven't caught your last video on Australian English - but they may not have covered that particular slang word. If you are "rooting" for your team in Australia - you would be offering them a much more personal level of support than the average fan LOL.

Best game in Australia. You should watch AFL’s biggest bumps or brawls. Best team of the modern era is Hawthorn Hawks. The won 4 premierships in 8 years and three of those in a row. If you want a team to follow that is successful. Hawks are your team. Last few weeks for a home and a way game some games have averaged 70,000 + fans per game.

I am an Essendon Bombers supporter. I have heard that Aussie Rules is played on the one of the largest fields of any ball sport. There is 18 players per side and is a very fast paced sport. The ball can go from one end of the oval to the other, and back again in less than a minute. Aussie Rules is also referred to as aerial ping pong, usually by people who prefer other footy codes. Others have described terms like marking and why we don't root for teams, so I won't go into that. I did notice at the end of the video was a quick shot of 2 men performing on guitar and singing. One of these men was a man called Mike Brady, who is a staple at the Grand Final every year. In 1979 he released a song called Up There Cazaly, which has become the theme song of Aussie Rules. The song refers to Ron Cazaly, a player in the early part of last century, famed for his spectacular marks. The term up there Cazaly was used by Aussie soldiers in WW2 as a battle cry. The somg has been performed at the MCG for the Grand Final for a long time. It was also performed at an empty MCG and televised to the Gabba in Brisbane during covid the only time the AFL Grand Final was not in Melbourne. One year they decided not to have Mike appear and there was instant backlash. It is a mistake they have not repeated since.

Each team comprises of 18 players on the field, with 4 players on the interchange bench. A quarter of football generally lasts 30 minutes(includes time for stoppages), making a full game taking nearly two and a half hours(includes breaks between the quarters) to complete. Aussie Rules players are one of the fittest players of any sport.

There is another excellent introductory video named, 'What Is AFL?', made for a USA audience with a USA narrator. I believe that Canada has amateur Australian Rues Football teams begun by our ex-pats over there where Canadians play, too. The players in the professional league in Oz are supreme athletes and run over 10 kms in each game. The oval shaped football 's bounce gives a randomness to the game. Players never know how it is going tp bounce (except in a controlled run) and so they have to be on high alert throughout the game. I love it when a player manages to kick the ball, from facing in the opposite direction , under attack from the opposition , yet somehow manage to kick a goal. Magic! The game is older than most and inspired by a game that the indigenous people, of stone age culture, played called 'marn grook'.

@@ImGodTheMaryBanger Nah that video is super outdated. Several players it talks about as current have since retired, it doesn't differentiate between a regular mark and a speccy, it doesn't explain the final scores properly so almost everyone who watches doesn't understand (they always miss that goals are worth 6, and the final score graphic doesn't reiterate to make it clear), and it was made a year before the AFLW existed so that is completely missing.

I always get a kick out of people discovering our iconic game for the first time and your reactions were awesome. To clarify some of the things you noticed: yes, packmen can move up the ground. When the ball is bounced in the centre circle (at the start of each quarter and after a goal is scored), players need to be in position (a pair of payers - the full forward and his opposing full back in each goal square (just in front of the goals), five other pairs inside each 50 m arc from the goals, four pairs inside the centre square and one pair on each side of the square. Once the ball is bounced, the players can move wherever they want and there is a tendency for players to move within one or two kicks of where the ball is. Any player can score a goal, although it is relatively uncommon for a Blackman to kick a goal. Yes, women and men play Aussie rules, but not at the same time! Yes, it looks like Aussie rules was cobbled together from a whole lot f sports but in fact, it is older than most of the sports that it seems to resemble. The game was first played in 1858 in Melbourne and was codified in 1859. It was invented as a way of keeping cricketers fit over winter. A mark is when a player catches the ball which has been kicked at least 15 m without it being touched by another player. The player can choose to take a kick from behind the spot where they took the marks and have 15 seconds to do so if they are not within scoring distance of goal or 30 seconds if they are. They can also choose to play on. Often, in general play, it is best to play on, to keep the ball moving and catch the opposition off guard. However, if a mark is taken within 50 m of goal, it is usually safer to stop and take a careful kick rather than play on. Yes, the opposition can try to stop a goal. They could take possession of the ball and move it away from defence or they could try to touch the ball before it crosses the back of the goal line or "rush" it through. In these cases, even though the ball goes through the goals, because it has been touched, it is only a behind and scores 1 point rather than 6. In Australia, we don't root for teams. Root is slang for sexual intercourse here! We barrack for teams. I barrack for the Hawthorn Hawks, who have been the most successful team in the VFL (the Victorian Football League, precursor to the AFL)/AFL since 1961, having won 13 of the 63 (21%) premierships since then. Our last successful period was when we won the 2013, 2014 an d 2015 premierships. We have had a lean time since then but have rebuilt an exciting young team who will likely compete in the finals this year for the first in several years. The last round of the home and away season is next week and the finals will run through September. Yes, this is the most watched sport in Australia. It actually has the fourth highest average attendance of domestic professional sports leagues in the world (after the NFL, Bundesliga and English Premier League). To whet your appetite before you can watch a whole game, here are the highlights of the round that has just been completed this weekend: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-japqXXU_hUE.html

Australian “Rules” Football is designed to be fast paced with as few stoppages as possible. Colloquial difference, Nth Americans “root” for their team, Aussies “barrack” for their team. Melbourne, Victoria is home to the most professional AFL teams (9) with another team around the bay in regional Geelong and there are two teams in other States in WA, SA, NSW and QLD. The sport is played in each State, Territory and many surrounding islands and according to GOOGLE in over 60 countries … that was a surprise to me! My family follows three different Melbourne teams but the majority follow Geelong. Melbourne has over 1,000 suburbs with a cricket/football oval and most suburbs having multiple AFL/Cricket ovals attached to Primary, Secondary and Tertiary school grounds so, the huge following of Cricket and AFL is grounded in grass roots local team participation and this is then replicated in each State Capital and the regional area of each State and Territory. Nothing rivals attending a packed, close, thrilling game. The crowd noise at the MCG when two well supported Melbourne teams are playing is unbelievable.

Yes its the biggest game in Australia . Crowds dwarf Rugby which is really only played in two states. Its one of the oldest games ever starting in 1858 , so it predates many of the other sports you might think it got ideas from, like Volleyball or basketball. Some say it has a resemblance to an even older game played by Australia's aboriginals, Marngrook. The ground is huge as its a cricket ground. Thommas Whills who wrote it made the game to keep his cricketers fit in the off season. He had a rugby background so they used a rugby ball and made it a full contact sport but that's the only similarities. A mark is a catch after the ball is kicked more than 15 m and is not touched by anyone . If the ball is knocked threw the goals , or rolles threw without being kicked its a point. There are now amature leagues all over the world including Canada. It is fast , physical , skilled and continuous so no time outs. For more you can check out the greatest marks of the last decade , or Eddie Betts best goals, Garry Ablett highlights, Dusty Martin, Buddy Franklin . If you into big hits there is also the AFL's greatest hits but it doesn't really showcase the positive sides of AFL.

It's about KICKING the ball. Passing is OK, handball or otherwise like a tap but it is limited. In short, you can only use your hands with a clear HIT. You can run, but the bouncing is not only going to slow you down, but a mis-bounce is always possible. You can only score maximum points, ie 6 points, by connecting your FOOT with the BALL. It's also clearly the quickest, most efficient method of moving that thing down the field which leads to one of the most spectacular aspects of the game. The MARK. Which can be a SPECCY especially when a mark is highly contested or achieved at speed. That's why you can call it FOOTY.

Combine marathon running (up to 15 miles), basketball jumps, sprinting, rugby style tackles, extreme ball kicking up to 80 yards+, volleyball level handball, over two hours of almost non stop competition between opposing teams of 18 players. In an arena much bigger than the Colosseum, up to 100, 000 spectators. The extreme speed of movement and contact requires four field umpires to rule over the game. Crowds watching the games dare not look away for fear of missing some spectacular feat of athleticism. Don’t get me wrong, there are stoppages as the umpires play a major role applying the rules of the game and awarding the ball to a player for a free kick, or bouncing/throwing the ball up to restart play. If the ball leaves the field, play can resume from a boundary umpire throw ~ 20 meters, or a free kick penalty like soccer. A team has mix of short quick players 5ft 6inches, mostly then powerful 6ft, then some 6ft-7ft players like basketball to dominate aerial contests. Then imagine watching women play who can kick the ball up to 50-60 meters, to be then caught/marked high over head of her opponent. Never a dull moment. Recommend the other intro video, “What is AFL”.

The earliest organized competition was established by the South Australian National Football League(SANFL formerly SA Football Association) on 30th April, 1877, followed by the Victorian Football Association(VFA) on 7th May 1877; in 1896, eight clubs from Victoria formed the Victorian Football League with some clubs from the VFA. Australian Rules Football is the oldest code of competitive football in the world.

Glad you found the greatest game on earth. The Yanks discovered it some years back and I think they have 50+ teams at amateur level. I enjoy the Freo Dockers ( my club ) or West coast eagles games played here because the footy chants from the local WA crowds are deafening and good fun . It's a 100% family game with hero's and villians, at times seriously fast with amazing balls skills, incredible marking of the ball ( catching the ball ) especially the speckies ( jumping above the pack to catch the ball ) and more often than not good sportsmanship. I've not been to a women's club game but I have been to a few local women's clubs games. Powerful bruising women would be an understatement. I took my girls to watch North Fremantle play one very wet winter's night. Two opposing players ran head first chasing the ball, blood everywhere and mate they just got up and straight back in to it. Tough game and at times leaves you with a cold chill as players collide but in all it's just a great vibe. Check out Afl's greatest marks and or biggest hits. It's one of the oldest team sports games in the world but very few know about it, enjoy ! Go Dockers 💪

So im a Carlton blues fan.. we haven't had much success in the past 20 years but getting there.. but we've also won 16 grand finals, equal most with essendon and Collingwood, who won it last year. In recent times, Collingwood, Richmond tigers, Geelong and hawks are the most successful with a few other teams added in.. There's massive rivalries between some teams too! It's a great sport, but im biased!

it's a good time to find afl, as the finals start in september. What was motioned is the other score, is when the ball goes through the goals but was touched or wasn't kicked, also scoring a point. Although instead of saying AFL took parts of every sport you should realise AFL was around before most others, so maybe they took ideas from it.

Collingwood supporter here. The AFL grand final, which on average has a crowd of around 100,000 every year, often becomes either the first or second most attended domestic championship game in the world for the year. In the last two decades, it's been the most attended domestic championship match fourteen times. Last year's grand final between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions attracted just over 100,000 people. The stat about being the most attended domestic sport per capita is correct too. If you take out the per capita and just judge it on average attendance per game, it's still the fourth most attended domestic sport in the world. The larger supported teams (like Melbourne, Collingwood, West Coast, Essendon, Carlton) will fill out a stadium week on week.

5:35 There is a coin toss before the game to decide which team kicks towards which goals. Kicking with the wind first can be an advantage for the team winning the toss if wind intensity or direction changes during the match despite the teams switching direction each quarter.

Kevin, the best, most talented, most speccy team with the best colours - red, black and white, is the Saints, playing out of St Kilda, a beachside suburb of Melbourne. Now, geographically speaking, if Melbourne was Canada, St Kilda would be Newfoundland. That's worth thinking about, Kev! 🤔 So, mate, you should barrack for the Saints! Go Sainters! (BTW, to barrack in Aussie talk means to root, but we don't say "root" down this way, 'cos to root means to have sex. No kidding! So be careful, when in Oz, stick to barracking...) Also, no doubt the folks who follow this post are going to make counter claims about their teams, but it's all BS. They'll also no doubt spit lies and vitriol at the Mighty Saints, but Kevo, believe me, they are deluded! And they have no teeth! Disgusting people. ☹ So yeah, mate, Go Sainters! Our club song is "When the Saints Go Marching In!" which is also the best song. The others are crap. Be smart, mate, and go Saints! 🙂

Brisbane Lions fan here. AFL is designed to be continuous so hence you have to dispose of the ball as quick and often as possible. Players can come at you from any angle so you have to have great spacial awareness. It's fast-paced and once you start to understand the rules and scoring system, you'll really enjoy it. I was in my early 20's when I started watching it and now I'm yelling at the TV like I've been a hardcore fan since birth.

I’m a Hawthorn Hawks supporter. Been a joy to watch my team have a great season after the last few years of being more middle of the ladder. The hawks have historically been a strong team, what we call a dynasty, meaning they win multiple premierships. Only a couple of players from the last dynasty are still in the team, our coach played then too. I’d recommend watching the official compilations of the best marks and goals of the decade, or some fan made compilations of the same. The best way to learn is to watch the game. You could find match highlights, or even watch a full quarter from past Finals. Watching this video in the quarter time break of the Hawks vs the Richmond Tigers. Pretty great start, up by 50 points after 20 mins.

The Mighty Hawks have won more premierships since 1961 (13) than any other sides. The only teams to have won more are Carlton, Collingwood, & Essendon (16) who were 3 of the original VFL - now AFL - teams joining in 1896, yes that is the correct date. Hawthorn joined in 1925 and won their first premiership in 1961. I have watched every one of those 13, either in person or on TV.

I'm a Dees supporter, so we've had a disappointing year, but in the video when they show he restart after the goals, that was the Dees taking control of the 2021 Grand Final (and I still get chills with that one). I'm a Geelong Cats supporter. We were the 2nd registered club as I recall, late 1800's way before Basketball and Volleyball were invented. A satellite city about 50 miles from Melbourne, where the other original teams came from. In the last 20 years we've finished in the top 4, of 18 teams 15 out of the last 20 years, and won premierships in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2022. We just finished 3rd after the pre final games this year, but probably not in as good a form as in 2022. I'd advise watching Jeremy Cameron kicking 9 goals last week, for a feel of the kicking skill some are capable of. Also Eddie Betts and Dustin Martin highlights are worth a reaction.
