In this video we follow the Newport Secondary from Van Zandt Switch to the vicinity of "Gate 4" in Newport, RI. This video shows the line passable from the start of track work at Van Zandt to the north. It also shows the major brush cutting work done by a contractor recently. This track and brush cutting work is being done to reactive this section of line for tourist use.
Here's how the line looked before the brush cutting work:

They did a really nice job on this line. It always makes me happy to see a railroad restored. Great video as always!

Its always nice to learn about a rail line reactivated. Once they are gone, they're gone.

Good heavens, I hope the bridge is rebuilt one day soon! It's desperately needed!!

A couple or 3 weeks ago, I was looking at the area from Google maps. Amazed at all the new road work at the now reconfigured 138 termination. Can't wait to make a trip to check it all out. Nice shot early on, zooming in on the maintenance train making the S turn. Cheers!

Really happy to see this! Track reab the next big step. Looks like the rail is good and in fairly good shape! Ties and plates, another story. Also, lots of ditch rehab work is needed. Fixable for sure! Proud of the guys!👍

New England is one giant slab rock below the surface. Takes time to do any digging for rehab, and is a major expense for the rail lines there. Even the old New Haven spent a great deal of time and money (and manpower) keeping ditches open and flood control maintained. Back then they did it all, with no real support from the public sector.

We are absolutely delighted to see this track be refurbished and reactivated, it looks in pretty good condition bearing in mind it was out of use for quite some time. Thank you for bringing us this interesting video presentation.

Getting a line back in service sure beats ripping one up. The track is going to need some serious work though.

Another super video. Global crisis alarmists should understand the need for rail lines, not convert them all to bicycle trails.

I reckon you need RU-vidr CRX6700 to come along and give some pointers on line management and how to achieve things cost effectively like a drainage culvert to draw that flood away early on in the video. Also consider if its tourist traffic to get rid of those stupid spikes and adopt some form of Pandrol fixing which will survive the hot and cold weather and need little maintaining if any and hold those rails solid to the sleeper for years. It may well be that the RU-vidr mentioned might have some used stuff going on the cheap as his line is worked hard and I expect it costs to pay to dispose of rail and sleepers which would be an upgrade for those very very tired sleepers in the video.

It would be so wonderful and likely very successful if MBTA/RIDOT established (re-established) a commuter rail line between Newport and Providence/Boston via the island towns along the eastern side of The Providence River. It would also greatly reduce highway traffic and increase tourism to Newport as well.

Pray tell, is there a schedule, and if so, what is it, for restoring the line beyond the switch - enquiring minds want to know ! And would appear that some drainage work is needed in the area under/near the bridge. And, am I missing something ??? Looking on the imagery in Google Maps, following the tracks south, they appear to end at a station on Bridge Street. If that’s the station, how is the working train north of the break ?? Thank you.

Good to see these old lines re-opened, but man are they in bad shape, they did a good job clearing out the old brush, but they could use to re-place some tie's and drop some ballast, other wise not to bad, but if this is for tourist use they are gonna have shape it up for passenger use and safety, for sure .

Great progress! Just curious, was the clearing done with some kind of tractor? There’s some pretty sloped terrain in spots. Also, any flak from the nimby’s?
@SouthCoastRailVideos
@SouthCoastRailVideos 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! The clearing was done with a hi rail tracked vehicle, basically a big tractor with an arm. I guess it is more of an excavator type of machine. I don’t know if any flak from the nimbys but thankfully it’s just rarely used and not abandoned.

Where's the primary line? Secondary line still full of trash - not good for tourists unless they clean up all of the crap along the way - especially under and around the bridge!

@ruffian2952 5 месяцев назад
None whatever. All freight gone long ago. Tiverton bridge replacement in works for 50 years after the Cape Cod Canal bridges are done (dont hold your breath). Once that bridge was removed this project became moot. Where were all you people before the end came?

@@buddycheck84 I, as a rail labor officer, was engaged in intensive efforts by rail labor to in some manner ease the return to higher traffic levels. We went around, hats in hand, asking consignees to help us demonstrate the need for amplified service. They turned their backs on us when their sidings sat void of cars. Getting this service back would need more than wishing by rail fans. I look at every video that smacks of former New Haven rail usage. I have a life, yes, but my life was invested in more than rail service that would not exist without the legal challenges presented by the Big Dig. There was more freight in the area from the wharf to Nash Road than a few frozen fish cars can replace. I cannot possibly swoon over freight traffic at present levels operated by newcomers who call Myricks... Myricks Junction. I have an Old Colony division timetable (No. 68 dated June 11, 1916) that lists it as Myricks .....be loyal to the heritage you try to mimic.

Next to the Newport Naval Base, Rhode Island. Google Naval War College on Coasters Harbors Island. East of that, find intersection of Rte. 138 and Admiral Kalbfus Road. West of that is intersection of JT Connell Highway. Just West of that...... Traveling North / South is the rail line they are on. Enjoy....!

Get a proper air chime for this locomotive. A diesel should sound like a diesel. There is a reason why they do not put steam whistles on diesel's they sound like crap when powered by air. They were designed for steam. It sounds like a kid's toy.
