So much freight in one day. 1st sighting of 4 brand new 66s. Loaded Iron Ore to Llanwern, 09 on freight moves, class 20 transfer, more 37s than you would imagine! HST in Swallow livery and loco stabling point prior to being the station car park.

Great video Mike. Shows very well how good Newport used to be. Astonishing how a single 59 handled the iron ore train as it used to be pairs of 56s and triple 37s before that! Miss the 09 doing the trips through the station. Do you ever remember Canton getting 3 class 20s from Haymarket for MGR trains. I remember seeing 20179/201 heading towards Barry. The third one was at Canton and I think it was 20185 IIRC. Did you ever capture the Scottish 156s from Inverness that were on loan to Canton to replace some of those 155s that were all withdrawn due to the doors flying open. Thanks for another superb video.

@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways The 20s must have been mid 80s. They didn't last long unfortunately with there being only one pair and one spare.and quite unusual to see at Cardiff anyway! They seemed to do the same mgr train service daily with 37s deputising on some occasions. The 156s arrived around late 1988 i think. I remember seeing a convoy of them coming through the centre road at Cardiff Central. They all had Inverness allocation stickers on them. The 155s were all withdrawn because of door faults mainly but weren't popular with crews either. Ironic,Cardiff got rid of them all as 155s only to get most of them back 30 odd years later as 153s. Speaking to a TfW supervisor recently who laughed off the 155s demise from South Wales only to get them back as new trains in 2020.made it the biggest joke of the year!

I remember passing here in the car on the way to Sainsbury's with my grandad when I was a child(about this time), I'd be up off my seat trying to see the trains. Why was that old carriage there at godfrey rd? Cut up now i guess.

Llanwern steelworks closed in 2004, loss of 1300 jobs. I believe the strip mill still operates
