Interesting. Good video Tim, gave me something to think about for next year. Still leaning towards an OT Sportsman because of the entire package, minus a battery source, for me is an "easier" option. I agree however, your solution is as good as, or better than the "other" option, and far less expensive.

Good job Tim. Glad the battery concerns are working out well. The weight of your set up sure makes me like that option. But as you know I went for the Life4PO and at 33lbs it sure adds some weight. I too am very happy with the Newport Vessels NK 180s great value.

Absolutely outstanding Tim. Many thanks and the BIG plus for me and perhaps you is that we can choose our own battery setup. In time, Lithium batteries will drop. The "OTHER" company, well I would not be the ranch on them dropping their prices. Also as an FYI, Newport Vessels DOES offer a Military Discount. Thanks for the video, looks like a great option for my PA 14. I was curious how well you could maneuver your boat with the motor in a fixed position and using just the rudder. Thanks for any feedback
@TimPercyKayakFishing
@TimPercyKayakFishing 2 года назад
It maneuvers well using the motor in the fixed position. I'm currently producing steering control for the Pro Anglers with NK-180S (it will work with Torqeedo as well). The advantage to using the steering control is; you're able to make quick adjustments in boat positioning. When using just the rudder, you need to get some speed to make any turning motion. Steering with the motor, you can turn the motor, give just a bit of throttle and you can adjust you position.

Thanks for the info. Still trying to decide between a spot lock trolling motor and this. I’ve got use cases fo both. From a weight standpoint, your set up would be much better. Something to consider with a Hobie PA, as loading and unloading is already a challenge without a motor and battery.
@TimPercyKayakFishing
@TimPercyKayakFishing 2 года назад
Yes, I now sell rear motor mounts that I make for the NK-180S (fits Torqeedo as well). The one issue I had with using the Hobie Power-Pole mount or other mounts out there was; the motor mount stuck out too far and made it difficult to lift from the rear. My mounts move everything in more so it's easier to lift from the rear.

I am using the FPV-POWER 24v LiFo 50ah battery and yesterday as an example, we left at 7 am and fished until 4:00 pm and the battery never dropped a bar! I was completely shocked. We were trolling for striper and so the motor was going all day. My initial voltage was 27 and ended the day at 26, I dont know how its even possible, but my partner there with me has the same rig and same results. You don't need 2 batteries with the LiFo package.

Thanks for a great video. I just purchased the NK-180S for my 2020 Outback. Now just trying to decide what power source to go with. Your FPV setup looks great, but pricey for me as a recreational fisherman, so Im also considering a 24v Lipo4. I know there are positives and negatives with both. For your FPV, can you tell me alittle more of how you have it set up? I know they are wired in series, did you put in a circuit breaker? Also, for charging them, do you have to disconnect them from series to charge? Also, which charger are you using? Thank you, Brian
@TimPercyKayakFishing
@TimPercyKayakFishing 2 года назад
Brian, yes the Lithium ion polymers are expensive. I currently have a FPV-Power LiFePO4 setup as well... it's two FPV-Power 12V 50Ah LiFePO4 batteries wired in series. I don't have a circuit breaker on either of my setups. The Lithium Ion Polymer batteries come with their own charger. They have a smaller cable on them that you just plug the charger into. You don't have to disconnect them from series, just plug a charger in each. I would recommend the Lithium Ion Polymer if you are concerned about weight and size, but it comes at a price. The LiFePO4's are cheaper, but a bit heavier. The LiFePO4 setup has a higher initial voltage (when you put all the numbers together they will have more Wh), so I expect I will get a little more run time out of the LiFePo4's..... I hope that helps.

Thank you for the videos Tim. Great job! With the help of your videos, I am close to pulling the trigger on the NK-180S for my 2020 Hobie Outback. I have used the 24 lb thrust Watersnake with a PWM and 54AH Dakota lithium LifeP04 battery the past year. I ran the motor through the cassette and has worked well with a top speed of 3.8 to 4 mph. I am 6'-2" and 240 lbs. As I see it, being able to keep my 180 Mirage drive where it belongs - in the drive well, will be a real benefit. I am curious however, will the NK-180S allow me to troll shorelines at very slow speeds for my bass fishing, or will I have to use my pedals to do this? Currently with the PMW I can troll at very slow speeds, no matter what the wind conditions are. Again, thank you for the NK-180S videos . . . much appreciated.

Tim, how did you wire them 24v in series? I see that they only sell the parallel connectors. Obviously your setup works great, most 12v lifepo4 batteries with an integrated BMS say not to wire in series, so I'm interested in how FPV supports the paralel connection for 24v. Thanks Much!
@TimPercyKayakFishing

To wire them in series, you just connect the positive from one battery to the negative of the other. Then you use the positive from the one battery and the negative from the other. I use my motor plates. I make two designs; The Single, which is for motor only or Power-Pole only. The Triple Threat is for the motor and one or two Power-Poles. I designed them because I wasn't happy how far the metal motor mount stuck out with the Hobie Power-Pole mount. With my mount it moves the supplied metal mount inboard a few inches, which makes lifting from the rear much easier. There are a couple things that could contribute to the voltage drop. One is that electric motors draw a lot more than rated on startup against a load so you can get a large temporary voltage drop til it gets going. Another could have to do with poor quality batteries. I've built 3 electric bikes, my first one had a very large and worrisome voltage drop from batteries that weren't up to the task. My 3rd bike had very little voltage drop because I had quality cells with proper discharge capacity. It looks like your batteries have a 60 amp discharge rating, so shouldn't be a problem. I will say though from my pretty extensive experience and research concerning batteries that there is a lot of BS in the battery market. Inflated numbers about, and sometimes the product is not even close what it says it is. Good to go with reputable battery suppliers and manufacturers. But these days everybody has a million positive bs reviews. Good to pay attention to the negative ones as well as do research on the supplier from multiple angles. Could also be that the controller is designed to use a different type of battery with higher nominal voltage.

I'm only showing 47 watt hours. I'm running 24v 40 ah battery setup (series-parallel)

Do you mean it's only showing 47Wh on the throttle control when you go full throttle? If so, that's because it's out of the water with no load on it.

@@TimPercyKayakFishing Ah I see. Yes exactly. I did not know that it needed to have load. I will try it out again by dunking it in a large tote.

Ken, yes the lithium polymer batteries can be expensive. Those batteries would give you 1250Wh. The big Torqeedo battery is only 915Wh. The LiFEPO4's batteries cheaper....you can get 24V 50Ah LiFEPO4's batteries for about $800-$900US. I just did a LiFEPO4 setup with two FPV-POWER 12V 50Ah LiFEPO4 batteries wired in series for 24V.
