Absolutely love this type of content. Was running rainbow stream for a while to have a twitter feed in terminal. Huge supporter of old school terminals accomplishing modern tasks.
Newsboat sequel covering macros would definitely be appreciated. Specifically if there are any vim-like macros available/configurable. I'd also be very interested in customizing the newsboat feed to minimize distractions as you mentioned at the end of the video. I would also be interested in your video editing workflow if it's also Linux based.
Noted! My video editing all takes place on Linux, using Kdenlive! Not sure it's anything fancy, just using lots of titles and a few effects to jazz it up a bit!
@@pugdev4 Be nice, I'm a busy mom trying to build a channel infrastructure. Plus RU-vid is going after folks talking about RSS and RU-vid options, so I need to *tread lightly* on this one. If it eventually comes out it might not even be available anywhere other than my PeerTube (tinkerbetter.tube).
I just installed newsboat with Homebrew and configured it. Since I previously installed Lynx, all my links opens in Lynx. And since I configured links to save all my cookies into /dev/null, this means full 100% distraction-free reading and 99.999% privacy. I am in pure hype!1!1!!1!!!one
I haven’t ever heard anyone talk through how to close nano before. My muscle memory for that process is so strong I forgot that you set the name of the file before the program exits.
Ok, now I have a third pane in my tmux config that travels with me from host to host. Thank you! Just so you know we FreeBSD people appreciate you including us.
FreeBSD is amazing! It's been a bit since I used it directly for a project, but at one point in the past I worked with a COBOL system running on FreeBSD- it was a joy to work with.
@@VeronicaExplains That is about as fun as Microsoft FoxPro running on FreeBSD under SCO emulation for a public warehouse software I helped support in the late 90s.
Thank YOU for watching!! I hope the RSS resurgence I'm seeing amongst sites I follow keeps growing. It's such a wonderful way to connect directly to stuff you care about!
Lady, you are GOOD!! I'd forgotten all about RSS. I _think_ I used it back in the days of Mosaic/Netscape, then Google Reader but I forgot about it. I might try using it again. Thanks for your very clear and NON-THREATENING explanation!
Thank you Veronica! I love newsboat and other terminal applications, currently I have a number of Linux based systems on my network, as of this post all based on Fedora 36 and use rsync and ssh to keep the configs and some selected documents updated from my "master" workstation. Keep up the great work!
I'd really like another video on using youtube inside of newsboat, that sounds super useful for not getting sucked into the algorithm. Thanks for all your lovely videos.
The mom sense-of-humor is nostalgic of my own mother whilst growing up and hilarious to me even to this day. Helps me see my mother as not so cringe but as legit funny in ways I didn’t understand until now. Awesome. 😎 I guess families have ways of being deeply similar even across lineages. I’m glad I stuck around to watch multiple videos.
So glad I found your channel. I'm currently on a quest to live in the terminal (I know, I know but please folks, let me have my fun.) This is exactly what I was looking for.
As you talk about/show, I hate that social media made most websites (and even the browsers) stop highlighting the RSS feeds. Love this tutorial. I've used both graphical and CLI feed readers in the past, but I've moved on to a self-hosted Miniflux feed reader so that I have access no matter where I am (without needing to SSH in)
Best video on this platform on Newsboat, most just showed their already finished configs and did not explain anything. No idea how you watched videos in it but that is something I sure want to be able to do - I am just not there yet. vkc, could you maybe take a look at Newscraft which has a nicer look and feel than Newsboat?
I'm not sure if it is me, but I couldn't find the RSS feed in this youtube page. I even used a RSS finder...., But besides that great video! Looking forward to part 2, and do Mutt too!!
Sometimes I have to hit refresh before the feed shows up. Plus, make sure you're on the channel page and not just a video. Try going to ru-vid.com and then hitting refresh if it doesn't show up. I use Awesome RSS on Firefox and it shows up as expected.
@@VeronicaExplains I was on the video page!! Thanks! I'll try again. Great videos by way, really liking your channel. Have you ever tried Qubes OS, I'd be very curious on your thoughts. make make for an interesting video.
SWEEEEEET!!! I had to get away from the browser based feed readers due to all of the 'noise' (pictures/ads/etc) because sometimes AWW what a cute little ground squirrel out here on my deck..... I should really water that plant..... ... yeah that ... I get distracted easily. Thanks VKC! Now to fire up WSL2 on my work computer and get Newsboat working
I was using newsboat today on a fresh install of Debian 12. I decided to compile it from source. When I was doing that, I thought about how I first learned about it. Thanks again for being so inspiring 😀 Is a second one video still in the works? @@VeronicaExplains
Hey thanks for this. There's something about reading things in the terminal that's just quieter and calmer and so much better. It's sort of how the entire public Internet was back in the late 90s, or even reading message boards on Compuserve for the few minutes a month you could without your dad justifiably complaining about the bill. Your videos are really helpful, and you're always saying "If you'd like a video about x, comment below!" so here's my request. Vim. If it's such a pain and I hit my PC with a hammer just to exit it, why is it so beloved? There's got to be a reason I'm sure of it.
Does it have ALT (Automatic Language Translation) to CTRL the quality of news i.e. SHIFT it up to the top of the *RSF* RSS league - in this #order Norwegian Danish Swedish Estonian Finnish Irish Portuguese Spanish [with Costa Rica #cadences] Lithuanian German [with Liechtenstein #lilt] ... French [with Burkina Faso #frisson]
Yes, it would be nice to have a video to open the videos on mpv, although I think I tried something like this in the past and it seemed very slow.... and without the feed to explore, I wouldn't have landed in your channel ;)
Hey, looks like you never did the part2 video? I would be really interested in your setup to read full articles (if not available via rss) and watch youtube videos without opening the website with recommendations and everything in a distracting browser :) EDIT: Just found out about text-based terminal browsers. For youtube without distracting recs I can really recommend the unhook firefox-extensions after using it for a good week, but I will find out what other terminal-based options are out there
@@VeronicaExplains Come over to the Dark Side. We have (better) cookies. :D As another video idea, how about an RSS reader that emails you the feed results so using a dedicated feed reader isn't needed?
I mainly use QuiteRSS on Windows. But i've also got into using Newsboat on my Raspberry Pi. I find using that and Lynx with the local uk newspapers filtered through FrogFind is a lot less destracting.
