Brooker discusses how Islam4UK orchestrated their publicity stunt of a march through Wooton Bassett and how filler reports are structured and padded out. How news airtime is filled with hand bags, social disruption (the truth about ASBOs), health reports, animals and analysing the brains response to various scenes from Britain. With guest stars such as Tim Key and Heather Brooke who discussed how Britain's journalism is based on anonymous sources. Doug Stanhope examines how America's newscasts portray the news in a different light as the day progresses.

I did Media Studies at A level and I've learned more about the media from Charlie's shows than from Media lessons.

Haha, that 'news report' template bit is so good.... "It starts here, with a lacklustre establishing shot of a significant location..."

If you were ever hoping that someone would do a TV show that moved forward while being fully aware of the Medium is the Message and Amusing Ourselves to Death than you're in luck because this is it. Great show, nothing quite like it.

I think she is being more than a little kind to the American media.

"La Roux is like Jedward for people who don't like music" I know my opinion doesn't mean much but I honestly didn't mind La Roux in her more famous days, but that's largely because she was only really famous for about a month or two and then she just kind of faded into obscurity like so many other pop artists do on a regular basis. As for her music, I don't really think it's bad but I don't consider it anything special either, it's almost like her music is designed to be played in the background at a chip shop.

I love Brookers work, but the American journalist complaining about anonymous sources as if it is some British thing that is unknown in the US is rubbish. Huge numbers of American newspaper, TV and online articles in the US are full of quotes followed by "the source did not give their name as they were not authorized to speak to the media" or "was not authorized to speak publicly". US journalists do this all the time!

15:45 She's wrong, sources don't only avoid being named in order to avoid accountability. They can be afraid of losing their jobs, being victimised or passed over for promotion, being ostracised or blacklisted, or even being bumped off. If whistleblowers are forced to be identified immediately and with no protection there will be a lot fewer whistleblowers. What she said about anonymity breeding lying and manipulation is right, but if we want sources in the know to come forward it's not necessarily the best policy to insist they always be named straight away.
@aargh93
@aargh93 10 лет назад
well the Finnish policy for sources is to name them unless there are good reasons for them to remain anonymous, for example when reporting on organized crime
@MatthewMcVeagh
@MatthewMcVeagh 10 лет назад
If that is the Finnish policy, that may result in some of the problems I mention. Who decides what are 'good reasons', what is organised crime? E.g. if you have evidence of crime by the government or its members?
@aargh93
@aargh93 10 лет назад
Usually good reasons are specified as a great risk of personal harm to the source. Of course this method is not bulletproof but nothing really is.
@MatthewMcVeagh
@MatthewMcVeagh 10 лет назад
OK. But this excludes losing your job because of blowing the whistle. Therefore there will be fewer whistleblowers, and companies/state agencies doing something wrong will get away with more. This is my point.

I think you totally missed the point of that section, and the reason he included the clip of the Muslim woman explaining the way the small, loud, extremists, get all the attention for their bad deeds, leaving a mark on all the rest of the Muslims. Most people who know of these extremists don't realize that the extremists are of a completely different following of Islam. There is pre-Muhammad, and post-Muhammad, and post-Muhammad is the violent, extremist, Islam. It went right over you didn't it?

You think that's bad? You obviously didn't see the surreal nightmare of the Bobby Gillespie episode. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I can only find an 8 second clip. Though it's enough to convey a sense of the horror! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z06jWOb66bA.html
