You are absolutely right. There are studies showing that guns owned for self defense are rarely used for self defense. Vs use in Murders, accidental killings, serious injuries, gang wars, domestic violence, mass school shootings.. the list is long. In sum - MUCH more bad than good
And 9 years later, we are worse than we were before. Inflation is rampant, geopolitical issues abound, mass shootings have multiplied, and we are still mired in a pandemic which spawned unprecedented public mistrust in gov't and public officials. When will everyone accept the tragic worldview that humanity will be suffering all of these issues and more, likely because human nature hasn't changed in thousands of years.

If you were to hunt with a gun and were fortunate to harvest game you might shoot once or twice, but there is no law to keep target shooting quiet on Sundays so folks have to endure the disturbing of the peace by the NRA crowd out to make a point. And they wonder why the majority of people dislike them? You're NOT a good neighbor running 200 rounds through your AR-15 at 9am on Sunday
I think they (NRA) must send out blast texts or emails filling them with fodder about their guns getting confiscated. No civilian needs a weapon that was SPECIFICALLY invented and designed to be used in war by the U.S. Army. No civilian needs weapons that accepts magazines. I don't even think civilians need semi-automatic weapons. I feel perfectly safe with our guns. They are all heirloom long guns, and almost as old as I am (11/68) with one exception. That exception is a one shot, that accepts either a rimmed .45 or a .410 shotgun shell. Why anyone NEEDS a 30 round magazine is absolutely foreign to me. I've been alive for 53 years and I have still not accumulated enough enemies to justify an AR-15. Or anything comparable.
I understand having guns for protection, hunting, and even recreational use…but when you start pulling out military grade weapons-what you need that for?! Who/what you tryna kill?? The terminator?!
The AR-15 pattern rifle is so popular because it is an easy firearm to operate. It has a light recoil. It breaks down for cleaning easier than other types of long guns. Reloading is easier than other long guns making it an ideal self defense firearm.

May I propose that firearms be regulated like cars are supposed to be regulated. Not EVERYONE can drive. You must be a certain age, have a modicum of physical ability, the intellect and judgment to be safe, maintain a safe standard of the vehicle, pass regular testing, and be free of certain legal offenses. Guns should be treated the same. Train, upkeep, qualify, prove by your actions. Failing any of these, no, you don’t own a firearm. Do you give a fully operative tank to a five year old? No. Should an ordinary adult citizen own a flame shooter? No. Want that? Join the military. It’s exceedingly sad that teachers, the lowest paid professionals, in addition to teaching their charges, are also expected to be administrators, parents, EMTs, psychologists, and now, sharpshooters able to engage in special tactics and hand-to-hand combat? Fine. Pay me the combined salaries of these professionals. Where do I sign up?

Until we change our cultural perception and adhesion to guns, we can expect more shootings and more grief. The 2nd Amendment states clearly its purpose, "A well regulated militia, necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Contextually written during a time when the "arms" referred to were flintlock rifles that required lighting smoke and oakum to fire. It is time to rewrite the 2nd Amendment to account for advanced technology that we now have and did not exist when it was ratified. No one NEEDS to possess a military grade assault weapon. The shooter at Robb Elementary repeatedly fired on little children, decapitating some and turning others into a mangled lump of blood and flesh. We must change as a species: We have become obscenely selfish and entitled. Banning assault weapons is a must but we need to focus on mental health issues simultaneously. The NRA should go back to teaching firearm safety instead of whipping up rabid ignorance of 'rights,' promoting the misconception that gun owners have more rights than the unarmed. I find it curious that the same people who are willing to criminalize a women's right to choose, to manage her own body, have no interest in protecting children. The hypocrisy is staggering. We can and must do better.
Banning “assault weapons” is a fool’s errand. Too many ambiguities, loopholes, exceptions & work arounds. That would be yet another joke on Americans. ALL semi automatic firearms. They’re FAR closer to auto machine guns than the single shot firearms mentioned in the 2nd. 100 round magazines firing 2,3,4 or more rounds per second? That’s a war weapon causing mass casualties. “Self defense,” my ass! Single-shot firearms only. 1-2 rounds per minute are what the 2nd guarantees. That’s it. Sami auto are military weapons and should be reserved for that use, just like machine guns, SAWs, rocket launchers, Howitzers, tanks, fighter jets & war ships. Let’s get real.
@@dudeonbike800 You made my point. I agree with most of your comments, but the notion that it is impossible to change expresses the apathetic selfishness that enables unstable persons to acquire rapid fire high velocity weapons, who can then walk into a school or grocery store and cut innocents to shreds. Context matters. Imagine seeing someone you love, viciously cut apart and decapitated by a weapon that should never be available to civilians. We have to start somewhere and because the AR-15 has typically been the weapon of choice for mass murderers, it is the logical conclusion that it should be banned from civilian access.
@@jakebredthauer5100 It should be obvious to any thinking human that there have been no legislative changes to our laughable gun laws despite the spike in random mass shootings. The dead and grieving survivors have not only been ignored, but vilified by GOP afraid of losing NRA funding. That is placing the right to own a gun above the unarmed, murdered victims' right to live. Gun ownership is a priviledge that should require testing & licensing and proof of insurance. Just like driving a car. Have a great day.
I see no inconsistency between the right to own a weapon and the right to not be murdered. One of the rights does not need to be subordinated to the other. Both rights can exist simultaneously. Having a weapon does not require one to murder anyone. Being murdered by someone is already illegal. Another example of your bad logic is when you call gun ownership a right and then later you call it a privilege. Gun ownership cannot be both a right and a privilege at the same time. Changing from one to the other would be a fundamental shift in power distribution. It is better if power is more distributed compared with power being concentrated in the hands of a few. I oppose your plan due to its adverse effects. These adverse effects were never even mentioned in your discourse, that I could see. A thinking person? I presume I am.

On the Gun control issue, It is "my personal opinion" That Yes we do have a right to bare arms, to protect our families and defend against attackers AS the constitution states. It is NOT the legal, legitimate or responsible gun owner that we need to target, but a control on the purchasing of a fire arm.
